I’m calling the date of the next General Election

Thursday 24 October 2024.

My logic is thus:

  1. Tory MPs with kids in private school will want the election after the next academic year starts so that they will get an extra year VAT free while Labour gets its house in order. This is why Jeremy Hunt said the election wouldn’t happen until the Autumn.

  2. Tory MPs will want to take full advantage of the summer holidays/recess so they won’t want to campaign in July/August when they could be on a yacht instead.

  3. Term will start Week Commencing Monday 9 October at the latest. They will want to have a week to sort things out.

  4. So, 6 weeks after the Thursday of the week after 9 September is Thursday 24 October which fits in nicely with half term and they can go on holiday again.

Place your bets.

I suspect there is some good news coming out in the next few weeks and it’s clear labour don’t have a clue with their manifesto, and have been caught on the hop.

Ooh are you another one who has already seen the manifestos that haven't been published by any party yet. Please do provide the link so we can all compare.

Notonthestairs · 24/05/2024 07:49

"and it’s clear labour don’t have a clue with their manifesto"

Eh? Have the Conservatives shared theirs yet - they called the election after all. Manifesto and candidates at the ready?

BritainDoesNotAppearToHaveTalent · 24/05/2024 07:45

I agree with the poster above saying “labour don’t have a clue with their manifesto”, but why the fuck not. They knew an election had to be called within the next 12 months. It really shows them up that they don’t have everything ready to roll.

Yes I’m surprised he’s gone for an early summer election… I thought October was more likely.

So a good time for the tories, and Hence why starmer isn’t wanting to over debate sunak. He will need his policies lock tight for that and labour are not known for looking at all angles and understanding the implications, like how things will be paid for.

this is a surprise for the electorate and other parties, for senior tories they will have known for a long time and be prepared.

Surely you mean rain.🤣🤣🤣

ArchaeoSpy · 23/05/2024 08:06

For our current prime minister and long may he reign.

BritainDoesNotAppearToHaveTalent · 23/05/2024 07:56

Yes it’s a slightly odd election date, early autumn would’ve made more sense in lots of ways.

All the private school parents will be rushing off to get their postal votes sorted as the vair posh schools finish at the end of June and they’ll be going on holiday the day after.

Same for us in NI, all our schools break up end of June and there is a huge exodus. Plus there is traditionally the ‘12th Fortnight’ which includes the 12th July, again very popular for holidays. There will be lots of postal voting.

If you’re in your early 30s (like me!), all you have ever known as an adult has been the Tory government, cuts, austerity, Brexit and Covid.

Imagine being 36 in 1997.

You’ll have to be more explicit than that, most millennials haven’t heard of black Monday and might assume it meant Amazon having a sale.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 22/05/2024 22:52

I don't think this LP are going to be the answer to dreams, but they are going to be better than the current lot, that's for sure. .

I actually cried with happiness (and I’m not usually super emotional!)

Me too.

Looking forward to a loooong relaxing summer. 😎

Wow.

No need to be snarky.

We haven’t had a single ‘good’ year. 2014/2015 things seemed to be getting back to normal(ish) then bam, Brexit. Then bam, Covid.

Easy to be derisive if for you it’s been more of a blip

That depends on whether you want to hear what's he's saying which I did as he was making an important announcement.

We were able to hear the date. The rest was a mixture of lies, irrelevant prattle and personal attack on Starmer; not new and definitely not "important" at all.

Thank the lord. Our pain is nearly at an end.

It really isn't.

Do you think that all the people on the NHS waiting lists are going to evaporate?

It will be end July when the students and young families are on holiday etc. He is relying on the older committed voters who don’t tend to go off so much for travels then.

Not that far off and here’s the reason
