From what I can see, after his entirely unconvincing "position" on gaza he has essentially disappeared from view. Blair notoriously used to do this a lot when he wanted to avoid legitimate questions, leaving brown nosing slaves to face questions from the proles.
So over to the mnet net, which I know has wise tentacles everwhere
Has the famous SIR dropped into your church fete/tombola recently? Selfies welcome.

Don't forget his unexpected spending in Yemen, @jasflowers !

jasflowers · 13/01/2024 13:31

@Clavinova Its great you pull Labour up on their spending plans.

So how is Sunak going to raise £1bn (at least) for the PO scandal? the £20bn in tax cuts, the talk of a proposed £6bn cut in inheritance tax?

Lets carry this on.. £2.1bn for Ukraine? the billions written off in CV support loans?

Labour has to justify policies that aren't even enacted but no such questions asked of Sunak?

Has he a magic money tree forest?

Granted this was a long time ago, but in some ways the rhetoric is similar today, just more covert.

Warning: uses the N word.

Christ , that’s dreadful. It’s shocking to think that actually happened.

Oh come on. You'd think Starmer had illegally prorogued Parliament or something.

But that only happened because Starmer didn't oppose it enough. Surely you know that?

@Blossomtoes there was also the Tory 'demon eyes' campaign against Tony Blair.

I have no doubt that the GE campaign is going to be dirty - but the Tories have more form for this kind of thing, and I am sick and tired of the hypocrisy that holds the left to far higher standards than the right.

BIossomtoes · 13/01/2024 10:29

Anyone else remember this? It was part of the 1979 election campaign.

And re constant invites to google up above, the big G will find many polite members of Joe Public in the comments bit of online press articles who think the same and despair of Starmer's Labour Party - so I'm far from alone in my doubts

Labour is still going to win the GE, though. I say that as one of the Starmer doubters.

A move worthy of Trump.

I was thinking more a move worthy of the Conservative party.

Strange how the Labour party is held to much higher morals than the Tories.

I do it myself and then wonder why. I guess the Tories have eroded their morals so much that expectations of them are extemely low.

>>I was thinking more a move worthy of the Conservative party.

er the two slurs were mirror images of each other. Each as bad. That's the point.

>>Strange how the Labour party is held to much higher morals than the Tories.

If the Labour party isn't, surely we may as well give up - toss a coin - and vote for whichever?

Of course some folks say Starmer is virtually a Tory - I have heard this from several folks I come across.

It was ill judged but this kind of hyperbole is ridiculous.

I don't think so.
Once political debate is taking place on such a level you may as well give up.
Political debate may as well take place in a Colosseum.
And just have regular hate weeks.
It puts me in mind of some of the stuff that is considered politics in Italy.
Though I don't think I have come across anything so bad there.

Anyone care to accuse Trump of being "ill judged"?

It was an ill judged advert, but I would not base my voting decision on that.

I am far more worried about Tory plans to completely crush vulnerable people. Any vote for the Tories in their current guise is an endorsement of those plans.

"Ill judged" is a euphemism of the highest order.
It stank.
Was beneath contempt for any politician.
As of course was the initial slur against Starmer.
Which made it all the more incredible.
It not only stank on moral grounds but was actually an attack on any concept of a decent democracy and democratic debate. A move worthy of Trump.
Fair to assume that Starmer signed it off?
If not what on earth is going on?

Fear not, I won't be voting Tory.
(though did find some of the charges above that I am a Tory illuminating)

Marina Hyde wasn't impressed;

I remember that descent into the lowest gutter.
Incredible after the gratuitous charges made against Starmer with regard to Saville.
Was he ever asked about that shameful ad and if so what did he say?
To be honest, I remember thinking at the time that I would have massive problems (understatement) voting for anyone who could put out such material.
That episode and the blatant lies put about by his team after his LBC interview on gaza give me very very very severe doubts about him. Plus the public vagueness on so many matters.

I am really pleased @ Clavinova you have also found some of things Starmer believes in

I did find Keir Starmer here in 2015;

https://www.hamhigh.co.uk/news/21371377.general-election-candidates-urged-support-sanctions-israel/

One of your more substantial posts on the matter.
Interesting.
Do you or anyone else have any info on what he said at that event?

I have really enjoyed this thread too. It has been really helpful as now we know that:

Starmer is not MIA, he has been busy;
He likes to socialise and so is not "dull";
Labour has set out what it stands for.

Keep up the great work.

Getting back to what Labour stands for
Labour’s Child Health Action Plan

Out of the 6 actions in the list - 3 are to be funded by abolishing (cough, cough) the non-dom tax status:

1.Cut waiting lists for children
How will Labour pay for this?
By abolishing the non-dom tax status.

3.Transform NHS dentistry
How will Labour pay for this?
By abolishing the non-dom tax status.

6.Introduce breakfast clubs for all primary school children
How will Labour pay for this?
By abolishing the non-dom tax status.

I've posted several times pointing out that Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves are being somewhat economical with the truth when they talk about abolishing non-dom tax status - the Guardian has caught up at last;

@Clavinova you have come up trumps again. If only you had posted sooner you could have put the lie to those posters who were saying that Labour had no policies.
Anyway, thank you for your efforts to share those policies with us.

DuncinToffee · 12/01/2024 22:40

He sold the field he bought for his parents after they died, how dare he

Starmer's parents died in 2015 and 2018 - I guess it depends whether Starmer has any plans to increase capital gains tax for the rest of us (if he becomes PM) as to whether it was the right time to sell in December 2022.

Man buys field
Man sells field

Quite the story

under an option being considered to allow a four-year grace period for those with the status.

Being considered,, nothing decided yet then
