I think Starmer has also demonstrated his competence by turning the party around from Corbyns anti semitic, momentum infested left wing nightmare to a credible opposition with serious policies in 4 years.
I think he's the right person to deal with the mess we are currently in.

The other thing about Gordon Brown was he seemed to have almost zero ego or personal greed. He genuinely only seemed to care about what was best for the country. And the economy was growing again when he left office.

@thegruffalosmaw. I agree with you. Gordon Brown was a decent Prime Minister. The media had it in for him, made easy after Blair.

It's makes me angry when I think about quality of integrity since. The media absolutely had it in for Brown. The shame of our media was absolutely at fault with Brown. It was unfortunate that he was caught on the mic saying an old woman was "bigoted" but the media blew that totally out of proportion. And also he was probably right anyway... Also they tried to say he had a temper and was a bully. I remember that. Well to be honest, Part of me thinks, so what is he did in private. I think that was the media thing to outseat him because he wasn't Tony Blair or Tory... when he stood up preceding the Scottish referendum to say to the Scots about the benefits of the Barnet Formula, devolution, etc etc he was absolutely excellent and gave such a powerful speech and spoke facts, I thought and seemed like he actually cared about his country. Both the UK and Scotland. I miss him in politics.

And Blair gets all the blame for Iraq, every one send to forget that uk involvement in the Iraq war was after an open vote in Parliament. The MPs at the time voted in a majority to go to war, that’s labour and Tory MPs and others voted for the war. It wasn’t a unilateral decision by Tony Blair it was a decision made by the MPs in parliament

His government did many many brilliant things . Sadly he ll always be judged on Iraq. 1997 were heady days.

I think the electorate were so angry with Blair that they didn't give poor Gordon a chance. I remember the debates as well and feeling so frustrated at people so caught up in the smugness and youthfulness of cameron and clegg and not really paying attention to what they were saying. Brown by contrast came across as old and grumpy which he couldn't really do anything about but he spoke a lot of sense. IIRC, Obama said Gordon Brown was someone he very much respected as a politician and I think that is high praise indeed.
I've met Gordon and Sarah and they are really lovely. My heart broke for them when they lost Jennifer. Gordon visibly aged overnight, the poor man.

I agree with your point about the Iraq war although the Tories were in absolute 100% support for the Iraq war as well. In fact if I remember correctly there was more objection from the Labour benches.

I don't think we such ignore just how much life improved for the average person in the UK during the Labour years though.

Mean to Y3s, but yes. I’m honestly surprised when people are shocked by the latest antics of the current Govt. Don’t they just expect it by now?

Burnham or Cooper would be outstanding. I saw Burnham talking at a conference (not a party conference) and went from never having thought about him at all to thinking he was just brilliant. He had a really good grasp of the data and stats and it really felt like he understood HOW to make things better, rather than just spouting political twaddle. Cooper is laser sharp and I’d trust her to take the job seriously and give it the respect it deserves. And actually, I think Starmer will be just great. It will hopefully feel like a grown up is in charge finally, and we desperately need that because at the moment it feels like we’re being governed by a bunch of Year 3’s off their noggins on Haribos.

Another one for Rory Stewart and actually really anyone from the Green Party here, but Lucas is outstanding. Also Starmer is boringly competent but competent is the key word. He’s clever and good at what he does. As a country we need that. His deputies ditto.

Tony Blair was a war monger who dragged the UK into a needless war with Iraq. I can't think of a worse person on the planet tbh.

@lightbulbspark I remember being very shocked and upset when he died. He would have been really wonderful. I think Jo Cox would have made a superb PM. Unfortunately she was murdered. Instead, look what happened? Poor Blighty. :-( How are we going to survive without outside help, I do wonder? I just hope that Kier Starmer is being quite clever in order to win, hope it's a forced deal with Lib Dems on the proviso for PR. It's the only way we can move forward. Fingers crossed. I have had to zone out of the news for my own sanity and it is helping.. :-)
