Do the Tories really support families?

The Tories claim to support families, yet have spent the last 13 years making life harder for families. I don't get it, can someone who votes Tory tell me how impoverishing a big chunk of our society, wrecking schools and the NHS, and taxing the bejesus out of everyone for such poor public services helps families? Yes, a loaded question, but someone needs to explain it to me as I don't get it.

No.

Do the Tories support families?

Of course they don't.

Cornettoninja · 02/12/2023 12:11

You view is shortsighted because without a safety net the results of poverty blight the entire country and actually costs you more. It costs more because poverty reduces our educational standards, it blights communities with poor health and reduces investment

don’t forget crime. People with little or nothing to lose care very little for laws that largely only work if the majority of the population buy into them. The veil of civility is really quite thin.

dubsie · 02/12/2023 09:10

I'm not blaming the middle class but the reality is some of the worst paid people serve to the relatively well off. I'm sure a lot of middle income houseolds would be horrified by the living conditions of those people delivering parcels, serving them in restaurants.....it's all hidden and kept that way for good reason.

travellinglighter · 02/12/2023 09:03

Essentially it’s tories sticking to the mantra of small government, austerity and trickledown economics. The idea is that you cut government spending and support the wealthy with tax cuts so that they use the money to invest in industry and generate jobs so that increases employment and increases tax revenue.

The reality is that they strangle public services to give billionaires tax cuts who then squirrel the money away in tax havens or worse, invest it in other countries who give them tax advantages just for rocking up with millions of pounds worth of investment.

Austerity doesn’t work. There is no harm in a government cutting waste in hard times but the money they save through efficiencies needs to be reinvested in infrastructure, industry or education. Think Roosevelt’s new deal. It dragged the American economy out of the Great Depression by building bridges, schools, libraries and housing.

Suddenly removing billions of pounds from an economy ny making savage cuts just makes the economy smaller and smaller economies make people tighten their belts and shrinks the economy again.

It's a Tory play book, divide and conquer. They always pick on the group unable to defend themselves...the immigrants, the benefits scroungers all being paid for by hard working families...

The truth is actually the complete opposite, middle class families live off the hard work of low paid hard working benefit claiming poorly paid service staff. This group of workers are paid very little but put in the hours and the graft

Without millions working on poverty wages those in the middle would be considerably poorer.

I'm baffled by you mentioning divide and conquer, then pointing the finger of blame at middle class families.

What about tax breaks for the Tories' rich friends, and massive corporations not paying fair tax?

dubsie · 02/12/2023 07:47

We all pay for services we don't use, that's life and we should expect that. I don't use air craft carriers but we all pay for them.

You view is shortsighted because without a safety net the results of poverty blight the entire country and actually costs you more. It costs more because poverty reduces our educational standards, it blights communities with poor health and reduces investment.

Hard work should pay and that's the whole point....hard work isn't paying for a lot of people and the harder they work the poorer they are getting.

RubeeMurray · 02/12/2023 07:46

No, they’ll fuck over anybody really.

My sister is divorced. She owns a mortgage free flat. Works 2 jobs and gets UC for her low income. It's a joke. Really the tories don't care about single mothers?!

Benefits on top of working and having no housing costs. It's a joke.

And no I don't want to pay for services I'm not using. You had kids don't expect tax breaks for it.

Does she now.

yes, the fact that people in work (2 jobs!) need benefits is a national disgrace. It’s not those who claim them that are the anomaly, it’s the companies who get away with not paying a wage that covers the basic costs of life that want shooting. They’re the ones benefitting indirectly from increased profits.

The OP highlighted families because there's a narrative that the Conservatives support families as a nuclear unit.

and this. They’re always banging on about ‘hard working families’ like they’re not the ones fucking them over left right and centre.

Re the I don't want to pay for services I don't use. This doesn't make sense. You benefit from those services indirectly every day. You say you don't have kids but you will rely on the education and skills those kids gain as they become adults. Drs, planners, builders, carers etc.
it like me saying I don't use the bus why should I pay for it. I benefit from those who have to use a bus to get to work to help me. Eg hospital staff and retail staff.

The number of jobs someone has is irrelevant really. The important thing is the total amount of money they earn.

So if they have 5 jobs and each job pays £12 a week she will be a lot worse off than if she had one job paying £10k a week.

Like I said, it's the total amount you earn thats relevant, not the amount of jobs you have.

The sturdy individualists that don’t think healthy families are of use to the nation are in for a bit of a shock when they discover there are not enough children being born to look after the elderly population and the work force must be made up of (the despised) immigrant workers. This is the right wing dilemma in a nutshell—they will immiserate the population and eliminate the very idea of s public good and then whine that women are selfishly not having enough babies to shore up the workforce. Then they will try to bring in cheap labor in the form of immigrants while also treating those immigrants as potential drags on the public purse snd denying them citizenship or secure right to work. Same as it ever was.

tescocreditcard · 24/11/2023 18:08

I'm old enough to remember being a child of a single mother during the 1980's under Tory rule. I've never known poverty like it in this country. Tories were vile to single parent families. I don't suppose they've changed much.

But don't worry, labour will be here soon to save us all.

Goodornot · 24/11/2023 18:06

Why is it always families? Supporting the choice you all made to have a family which is hugely expensive to do.

The disabled. The single how about them

Single and childless get fuck all and when I see politicians banging on about hard working families I think so I don't work hard and take nothing out of the system ... I wonder if they want my vote.

lightinthebox · 24/11/2023 18:04

I’m not saying don’t be concerned about women’s rights, but you can’t look at what the Tories have done to education and be happy to let your child continue to have a badly funded education with all the repercussions.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 24/11/2023 17:55

Or claiming that trans issues are more important than children getting a decent education and future. It’s not saying their beliefs should be ignored but there is the bigger issue of their destroying the NHS, mental health services for children and that schools can’t afford assistants to help children.

It's not trans issues. It's hard fought for women's rights issues. Which are pretty fucking important to, you know, women. Who by the way can also be concerned about children, education etc etc at the same time.

lightinthebox · 24/11/2023 17:49

MyopicBunny · 24/11/2023 09:34

Of course they don't. The majority of people who vote for the Tory's are shooting themselves in the foot.

coollam · 14/11/2023 15:28

No they don't even some of the conservative with a small c things they used to do to support families and marriage they no longer do. They support themselves and facilitate the transfer of public money into the offshore accounts of their big business cronies. We've had a self serving, smash and grab tory government for the past 13 years and we wonder why everything, all our public services, the NHS and so on has gone to pot?

Fifiesta · 14/11/2023 15:23

Absolutely! ..The families in question have off-shore accounts, can afford
private healthcare, ditto education, as many homes (& children) as they care to have. Senior Conservative love them because they either reflect the upbringing that they themselves had, or that they aspire to.

Grabbermajor · 29/10/2023 22:20

Just vote for whoever you believe will deliver your expectations then. Good luck!

LuckOfTheDrawer · 29/10/2023 11:32

Grabbermajor · 29/10/2023 11:14

Why highlight families? No one forces anyone to have children, it's their choice, why should they have a free ride at the expense of all the other taxpayers?
If you don't like the exorbitant taxes, or what they spend our money on, like the pointless HS2, or the trendy taxing of petrol/diesel car owners (as everyone knows, British car drivers are solely responsible for global climate change/warming/rainy spells, or whatever today's weather is), then vote them out. See if the other lot can do any better. They never do. Because British society as a whole is completely convinced it has a right to be spoonfed from cradle to grave.

The OP highlighted families because there's a narrative that the Conservatives support families as a nuclear unit.

I don't think that expectations of basic functional healthcare and education systems amount to expecting to be spoon fed.
