Why is a non-economist in charge of the country's economy?

Being unable to comprehend the chancellor's economic strategy, I googled his background. His degree was in classics and history. Where are his credentials that equip him with the skills needed to be in charge of a whole country's economy?

I just don't get it. Why are we continuing to put non-specialists at the very top of their government department?

Well I know this has been the case ever since I can remember (I am nearly 50), but has it been ever thus? I wonder if it's once you get to a certain age, and a certain level of experience in your job, that you realise that putting non-experts in charge of large organisations or government departments is actually idiotic. Is it really all down to jobs for the boys?

The real brains are the civil servants and the Permanent Secretary to the Treasury. Only problem is that like in my Gvt department civil servants are expected to implement policy, not try to influence it.

It's the same as why someone who has never worked in education can be the education secretary, or someone with no medical knowledge can be the health secretary!

almost no chancellor is ever equipped for the job. They don’t tend to sack their
best advisors as their first actions tho!
