Apparently, this is highly likely to happen according to someone I know. He’s been right about a lot of things. I hope he isn’t right about this.

I’m always astounded people vote for them. If you have a six figure income, they represent some of your interests. Seven, or eight, and they’re your party. Everyone should have the chance to vote for a party that represents their interests. If you don’t (which is the vast, vast majority) they hold you in utter contempt and are screwing you seven ways to Sunday. It’s obvious, and yet people vote for them. Why? Why? It should be impossible for them to be in power. Laughable that they even try to get people to swallow this bullshit. And yet they are. Why, in a democratic society, would people consistently vote for an out of touch, un-representative, privileged and wealthy elite. How? HOW are they scamming votes out of people? I’m beyond incredulous.

And yes, it was always obvious they’d go after EU employment perks as soon as they could. Particularly JRM, who would like nothing better than to bring back the workhouses. I live in hope that someone will expose him to sunlight and he’ll crumble into Victorian dust, but it hasn’t happened yet.

People with less leisure time spend more money on it, keeping the capitalist merry go round spinning and the money flowing up the pyramid. Especially if they are unhappy at work. The last thing you want is people with enough free time to make moral choices that are a bit more work (like shopping at independent farms, cycling to work or making things themselves) or having good enough work-life balance to enjoy their leisure time just being around their families and friends without adding value with paid-for experiences. Lockdown made people value simple pleasures that were not making money for Tories, like dogs, their gardens, walks, local countryside and baking with their families. It made people search out small producers and local food with short supply chains - you couldn’t get on a milk round or near a gale shop, here. No money in those for JRM and Co. So get them back to work for the sake of it, back to commutes, away from families and homes. Limit that leisure time so they’ll spend, spend, spend. And make sure they’re dehumanised and undervalued at work to encourage them to shop to boost their self esteem.

Never mind protesting, we should stop shopping. We should strive to keep every penny in our own communities and going to people like us, not vast corporations which benefit a very few already-rich people. I don’t mean we need to revert to a pre-war lifestyle. Online it’s easy to buy things from small producers now. It’s just a bit more time consuming and a bit more expensive. So you need people who have leisure time and surplus funds to make good choices. Oh!

The reasoning seems to be that in America, nobody gets paid leave. So we have no right to expect it here, either. That will be why, in the US people only have 2 weeks holiday a year then.

Unfortunately, things have become worse and worse and people have also shown that they are happy to keep voting for a government who doesn’t benefit them by being in power.

Well that’s not true for a start. It’s called paid time off and last I worked I had 4 weeks of it with the option to buy an additional week.

Anon778833 · 22/09/2022 00:52

Striking does not tend to encourage the government to change anything though.

People have also shown they are willing to strike for higher pay. They sure as eggs is eggs will strike if there is any move in this direction.

I really really doubt this will happen. It would lead to an outcry and destroy Liz's lead in the polls. I think she's not stupid enough to do that.

WTF 😂

Are you ok?

What a load of bollocks. Daily Fail reporter with bugger else to write about, is that you?

Do you ever bother to read about politics, generally? It doesn’t sound like it…

The US model is a very small number of people being very rich. It's easier to become very rich in the US than in Europe. And everyone else puts up with being badly off and having very few employment rights and benefits. The Tories love this model because they see themselves as being in the very rich minority. Which in their minds they fully deserve. The rest of us will wait on them.

I'm actually amazed that the UK has a right to 1 year's maternity leave. I remember when it was 6 weeks. I don't think that'll last much longer.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 22/09/2022 00:30

Surely this is one of the key reasons why so many Tories were in favour of Brexit? They resented the EU legislating to protect workers' rights. What on earth did people expect was going to happen?

CallMeLinda · 22/09/2022 00:24

Nobody should be surprised that this government is shafting ordinary people.
And yet they are.

donquixotedelamancha · 22/09/2022 00:24

It would turn the entire working population against the Tory party, so no I don't think it will happen.

If that we going to happen then I'd have thought the removal of unfair dismissal protections would have done it.

You need only look at any thread about abusive employment practices to know a lot of people don't agree with the rights they have already.

Every maternity discrimination thread has loads of people excusing the employer.

It's mad but I don't think this is a huge vote loser for the Tories and (as long as the left remains split) it's more important for Truss to get the right out to vote than to seek middle ground.

Sixtyfourteen · 22/09/2022 00:21

I remember saying this to someone before the Brexit referendum. They said it didn't matter. Because - sovereignty.

Yes, people were warned about this loud and clear, but they voted for it anyway.

It's hardly surprising that Liz Truss might think she can get away with it.

Sixtyfourteen · 22/09/2022 00:20

People rarely protest here. Plus the government have made it illegal. It was always obvious that they would remove employment rights and benefits.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 22/09/2022 00:15

Wouldn't surprise me. We've taken back control.

People voted to get rid of Europe's influence over our labour laws, so the British government is free to do what it wants, as long as it can push stuff through Parliament.

Quite.

They can prise my holiday pay from my cold dead hands.
What happened to mass's protest?
Why are we all so compliant nowadays?

Did you miss demonstrations (whether mass or just one person) being made illegal? You can be jailed for years for demonstrating.

Rollercoaster1920 · 22/09/2022 00:03

Given current labour markets it would be a brave employer to try to reduce paid holiday, irrespective of government policy. Civil service or Lords will delay this stupidity until it dies.

Hapoydayz · 22/09/2022 00:01

This cannot be true. Companies are paying workers on under £40K cost of living bonuses between 1 and 2k to help out. They are not going to be taking away their paid holiday when there is a skill shortage.

'Someone I know' 😂

They have some pretty strange ideas but they won't commit political suicide.

Every single working contract in the UK would have to be renegotiated. Can you imagine the cost? The number of public sector workers we would lose. They would just walk away and go independent.

Going independent means no holiday pay, no sick pay, no bank holiday pay?

Like the millions ? of uber drivers, amazon workers, contractors, cleaners, small business owners, hairdressers who rent a chair, etc etc

4.65 million self employed at the last count- who dont get paid leave from work.

because millions of people don't get that holiday pay- it is a gig economy
People are pissed off that they lost a days pay on Monday for example.
