Apparently, this is highly likely to happen according to someone I know. He’s been right about a lot of things. I hope he isn’t right about this.

People rarely protest here. Plus the government have made it illegal. It was always obvious that they would remove employment rights and benefits.

Protesting is not illegal lol

Because the government will change the law so they don’t have to pay it!

But this makes no sense....you are being completely illogical....

If they scrap it Employers will make more profit, employees will become poorer and the Government will have to pay more in benefits. Yes there will be a small amount in corporation tax but not as much as they will have to increase benefits by....

It would make more sense to increase paid holiday....

Completely agree and Tory's wouldn't be in power without the working population

Agree with you both

They are going for the middle earner atm with policies that are attractive to them

PAYE employers are but going to stop paid holidays

Did you miss demonstrations (whether mass or just one person) being made illegal? You can be jailed for years for demonstrating.

Or in my case you could be deported to the country of your father's birth (where you have never lived and don't speak the language)!

'Someone I know' 😂

It would turn the entire working population against the Tory party, so no I don't think it will happen.

They have some pretty strange ideas but they won't commit political suicide.

Every single working contract in the UK would have to be renegotiated. Can you imagine the cost? The number of public sector workers we would lose. They would just walk away and go independent.

Completely agree and Tory's wouldn't be in power without the working population

I can't think this will be a vote winner.

It’s not meant to be a vote winner for us, it is meant to put money in the pockets of their donors, who will then give them “consultancies” or some other nonsense but highly paid role when they are booted out in a couple of months.

There is a massive recession coming, probably unavoidably after covid, and they are making sure the rich are as insulated as possible from it.

Thisismynamenow · 22/09/2022 09:03

But the government wouldn't benefit from cutting holidays, they don't pay it?

Maternity and sick I could see because the Government contribute towards it, but holiday entitlement is paid by the employer?

Theyll actually benefit from the tax revenue generated from the need to have extra staff to cover the leave surely?

TwigTheWonderKid · 22/09/2022 09:02

Do all those who say they won't do this because it will make them unpopular think they'll actually put it in the manifesto? I don't think they publicise the fact that they effectively support fire and rehire strategies, but that is a reality. It's also a reality that ideologically, they massively support deregulation and care more about investors and the profits of big businesses than ordinary people so now we are out of the EU, workers rights are only likely to go in one direction unless we stop voting these people in.

AntlerRose · 22/09/2022 08:45

Skolo · 22/09/2022 08:33

The UK has far longer maternity leave than the minimum required by the EU. So I’m not quite sure what happened in your situation.

It might do now, but mat leave only started in 75 as part of joining the eu and then was improved in the early 90s on a directive from the european commission to bring it up to eu standards. It looks like it carried on improving from then on.

midgetastic · 22/09/2022 08:39

They have a problem with not enough people working

So you make them that work work harder and longer then you need fewer staff

They will probably also change national insurance contributions- so all those who have paid full stamp and are in their 50s cutting back on work will be forced back into employment also

NC.

I don’t want to be outing but let’s just say I work pretty closely with government on policy issues. I can categorically say this is not going to happen. I mean, Truss is as mad as a hatter but she is not that bonkers.

You realise that she wants to win the next GE? Can you think of a single policy that would be more unpopular than this? 😆

Scaremongering for the sake of scaremongering.

Bankers bonuses?

Well my holiday allowance shot up in the 90s thanks to an EU directive. Think it was 15 days and suddenly went to 20. So would think it quite likely that they'll do away with that if they can.
Maternity leave also doubled between my two children, thanks also to the EU.
Why is anyone surprised?

MarshaBradyo · 22/09/2022 08:32

What are you expecting op?

That for a PAYE job someone won’t get the days off paid by employer?

Ot something else not PAYE

Sirius3030 · 22/09/2022 08:31

What is so surprising? I suspect that it will happen first with new employees - 15 days holiday with the right to ‘buy’ ie not get paid for, up to 5 extra days.

Anon778833 · 22/09/2022 08:31

As for why would they? Because they think that paid holiday isn’t an entitlement. They have done a great deal of damage over the last 10+ years which is pretty much irreversible.

Completely untrue. a) it isn't paid by the Government it's paid by employers so why would they? b) it will make workers poorer, and the Government will have to then support workers more....so why? Makes no sense.

I hope so! I don’t think that she will get a majority. For a start, she’s a woman. Not that misogyny is a good thing but in this case…

If she doesn’t win I hope this isn’t why.

The party members voted for her despite being a woman in any case.

Infinitemoon · 22/09/2022 08:17

They can make paid holiday pay optional. It will start with only a few jobs having poor holiday allowance, and then slowly spread over the years.

Just like sick pay. Very few, low paid jobs, have this now and people just accept it - they have no choice.

Shinyandnew1 · 22/09/2022 08:15

What happened to mass's protest?

The Conservatives passed laws to stop the public protesting. They also passed laws to make striking very difficult, too.

People prefer clicking instead

The days of actual meetings seem long gone.

AntlerRose · 22/09/2022 08:15

It will be chipped away at so people dont notice it happening to avoid mass protest. Just certain categories of lower paid jobs.
Lots of employers will still offer better conditions than the minimum too.

www.thelondoneconomic.com/politics/bonfire-of-workers-rights-policy-likely-to-be-led-by-jacob-rees-mogg-334168/

Jacob Rees Mogg is on record saying that paid holidays for workers aren't a moral right.

So yes, kiss goodbye to the working time directive and hello to 48+ hour weeks.

That’s because he has no morals and would probably return back to Victorian Britain with kids up his chimney if he could. He really is an out of date , nasty man.

They are slowly unpicking lots of rights that we had. And will continue to do so. Nothing would surprise me with these awful clowns. But still think that’s a step too far.

hopefully truss will be destroyed at the next election.

It’s shit working in alot of jobs right now. I’ve been in the NHS a long time. I’m hanging in ( it’s imploding and is shit) but if they cut my needed holiday time I’d be off. I’ve worked years to build that up!

Honestly generally overall I think even more would strike/protest. The Tories seem to know the are losing power and are trying to make their ‘friends’ rich and destroy the economy even further before they do.
