Yes, it is about her husband's role in setting the tax rules, including continuing to allow the tax loophole of long term residents being 'non domiciled' for tax reasons. It is a loophole that has been flagged up by previous governments.

When your husband is responsible for tax revenues in the country in which you appear to be permanently resident, of course it's relevant.

Where her income comes from is only relevant if she's temporarily resident here, which is surely quite a difficult position to take if your husband has designs on being PM? As a settled UK resident UK tax would be due on her income wherever it comes from.

But then my new point is, that's India's concern. Not the UK. The UK won't tax the likes of Amazon for money generated IN the UK so why criticise someone earning money from profits made overseas? Taxes should be paid on profits in the countries where they're from and if not, it's up to that country to contest it.

I'm not sure why his wife's tax is such a big issue. She's earning money generated by a company in India, if anyone should tax that it should be India. Didn't they confirm at the time that she was paying tax on her UK generated income? As for tax avoidance... even the Queen was caught in the Panama papers. Let's not pretend the MPs with family money aren't hiding it all in trusts.

Rishi's not getting the big job now. Whether or not one thinks an Asian bloke could feasibly be PM yet, this particular Asian bloke couldn't. Because nobody with a billionaire wife and her complicated tax affairs is going to be capable of winning an election where the backdrop is the worst cost of living crisis in decades. It would be an utter gift to the opposition. So he won't be given the opportunity.

This is sadly an example of the number Johnson has done on the electorate. The notion that everyone is the same as him is, fortunately, simply not true. We have never in living memory had a government as incompetent, corrupt and untrustworthy as this one, and if we get rid of Johnson and his sycophants we don't need to ever again.

I agree with Provence. I think as a charming, good looking, intelligent man who threw a lot of money about during the pandemic and who happens to have dark skin, he's entirely electable.

The U.K. absolutely would vote for Rishi, and many thought he would make an excellent PM.

The biggest issue with Rishi is certainly NOT the colour of his skin, but the tax evasion and the huge wealth he sits on - how would he ever understand what it is like to live in poverty? He is extremely rich and privileged and it is that works against him, his business portfolio is too complex, wide and potentially I’m conflict with the role of PM

I doubt he would. UK may have had several female PMs now, but the electorate won't vote for someone who isn't white, however privileged and wealthy he is. We're not there yet.
