Would you stay & Fight?

If you lived in Ukraine, I mean.

Pretend you had the basic same home/family/job/skillset you do now, but in Kyiv today.

I think I'd try to figure out how to stay & fight & send the youngest DC away West with DH (who probably wouldn't want to stay & fight).

Your likely choice?

My OH would stay and fight. He would want to know that me and the children and his parents were safe, and as far away from the fighting as possible.
I expect plenty of the people fighting in Ukraine feel similarly.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 28/02/2022 10:26

My instincts would be to stay however my kids are 3 and 7...dh wouldn't be allowed to leave with them so I think I'd have to go. Enough of my family were raised in conflicts to make me feel uncomfortable with the idea of staying with young children. My own experience was on the gentler side but having our school bus searched every morning by men with guns, being evacuated for bomb threats/doing bomb drills and watching your father check under the car each morning was a painful life lesson at a young age.

If my mum/dh's parents were there to evacute the kids, I'd stay though. My father taught me to shoot as a child and I'm a decent shot plus I have in my misspent youth made a molotov cocktail or two.

DropYourSword · 28/02/2022 09:58

My son is 5. I'd do anything to get him away and keep him as safe as I could.
If he were a lot older (very late teens onwards) and I couldn't get him to leave then I'd stay and do whatever I could to protect him. It's all about my son first.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 28/02/2022 09:51

No I'm unable to fight. I think I would let my parents take the DC as Dp would have to fight and I would just stay. As I am unable to walk far at all so I'd just be a burden

ancientgran · 28/02/2022 09:51

@LauriePartridge4Eva Are you really asking why men are being asked to stay and fight rather than women? You can't be this stupid. NO ONE can be this stupid.

No I'm not asking that, I'm asking why men and women aren't being asked the same thing, either to stay and fight voluntarily or both being told to stay and fight.

Hope that helps you understand.

ancientgran · 28/02/2022 09:49

@Zazdar

Modern warfare isn't all about physical strength. Fighting can take many forms. Maybe you think it's all hand to hand combat.

From what I am seeing, the war in Ukraine is very much hand to hand combat.

You haven't noticed the guns, bombs, missiles then.
@ancientgran stop trying to make a fucking tiresome point about sexism, or feminism or some agenda you have.

Do you always have issues with people having a different opinion to you? Maybe you could stop being so fucking tiresome. Women aren't some fragile little creatures and can fight, have a look at our armed forces, plenty of women doing vital work either on the front line on in support roles.

MenopauseSucks · 27/02/2022 05:35

would head to the care home in which my mother lives & help out there.
Maybe we would be asked to defend it. More likely there could be a shortage of staff so they would need the help.

Nat6999 · 27/02/2022 04:42

I'm disabled but I'm sure I could be helping making molotov cocktails or manning phones in rescue or rest centres.

DowningStreetParty · 27/02/2022 04:26

Those that are staying and fighting. My god they are brave, so so brave.

^This. 100%.

And also bravery in a different way shown by the Russians in Russia protesting against this because they will be harmed for doing that.

I have no idea if it came to a need to fight, in reality what I would do. And I pray to God that it never ever does come to it, much like the Ukrainians under this devastating attack must have also prayed. Sad It’s unthinkable to just invade another country- yet it’s happening right now and ordinary people’s lives are being devastated by it. I can’t stop thinking about it.

There’s not a safe way out of this for anyone and the ripples of it will be felt all over the world, even though globally most people will (please God) not be close to any fighting.

If I didn't have children absolutely, I wanted to join the RAF at 16 but my mum wouldn't allow it, She was scared I'd be drafted to Iraq, Still kick myself to this day about it.
I'd absolutely stay and fight it's not even a question in my mind, I'm so angry at the thought of the innocent people having their whole lives stripped away because one power mad fool can't just accept that the world won't bend to his will.
@LauriePartridge4Eva Men's wars? So you think granddad is claiming the war? People get hurt in wars, men and women. Women are also vulnerable as refugees, maybe they'd be in just as much danger.

The question remains why would women have the right to leave but 18 year old kids and old men would have to stay. It isn't about shaming women, it is about men having an equal right to decide to leave or fight.

You seem a bit fixated on rape, being killed or tortured isn't much fun either you know.
Itsbackagain · 26/02/2022 21:27

Not having young children so yes I would.

I think I would try and stay to do what I could. I wouldn't want to leave DH, DS1 & 2 who are of an age who would be made to stay. So I'd probably send DS3 age 15 with adult DD to a safe border and hope for the best.

I'm a fat menopausal woman who can't walk to the bus stop without getting out of breath so what use I'd be I'm not sure. Maybe I could volunteer in a hospital or something?

BloomingTrees · 26/02/2022 21:21

Even though I've said I'd leave I'd want to help as much as I could from the other side.
Children get lost and separated from parents whilst fleeing from war, I'd want to help them.

Modern warfare isn't all about physical strength. Fighting can take many forms. Maybe you think it's all hand to hand combat. Women can show as much bravery as men maybe some biographies of women like Violet Szabo, Noor Khan or Odette would broaden your outlook. Incredible women who fought for freedom.

Women are much more susceptible to war crimes such as rape. You know this. So I have to question why anyone would try to shame women into fighting men's wars, knowing they are more likely to be raped and attacked. Just, why?

Dmsandfloatydress · 26/02/2022 21:07

I would stay and help if I didn't have a small child but I wouldn't bare arms. I couldn't kill another mothers son.

Type of job I do is be more useful staying put and doing my bit. My 18 year old daughter has a spirit about her and would probably ready to stand up to it. I’d hope my husband would take my younger daughter to safety (though she feisty enough to want to stay and put up a fight as well)
But I’d never judge what another person choses to do and my heart goes put to everyone in Ukraine regardless of what they choose to do.

To be honest we have lived a safe life in the UK so far, so I don’t know honestly how I’d feel or react. I just know as the type of person I am I would have to do something to help.

BloomingTrees · 26/02/2022 20:57

Women and girls get raped in war.

It happens again and again. The invading army is not going to treat you as an equal as a woman.

War is for armies to fight, not mothers with young children so this is why I'd be out.
I also wouldn't want my DC growing up traumatised.

LauriePartridge4Eva · 26/02/2022 20:50
**@EvilPea* Assuming what I’ve just read is accurate. They have 36,000 women fighting. Including “miss Ukraine”* Yes I know that, they aren't throwing the women out but the fact remains that what we are hearing is men aged 18 to 60 aren't allowed to leave but all women are. I'm surprised in the 21st century that women aren't considered equal and also that men haven't got the same freedom. I'm not sure which surprises me more.
It's because men are physically stronger in every way. I'm sorry but what else is there to understand?🤔 Don't tell me you are one of those imbeciles who think men's and women's anatomy and physiology are the same.🙈

Zazdar · 26/02/2022 20:46

Not sure, but know my husband definitely would.
