The liberal media constantly slating Britain.

I've never felt like this before. But over the past few months its become obvious, at least to my tiny brain, that the mainstream British media is trying to send the British public down a rabbit-hole of self-loathing.

England gave the world The Beatles, The Stones, Kinks; a universal language the world uses to this day. I fear we're sinking down a liberal sinkhole of self-loathing perpetrated by an over-educated liberal middle-class whose only interest is their own wealth. It's our history that makes true British people go out on their shield.

It's our history that makes true British people go out on their shield. There is no reason to be shamed about our history.

Remember when England produced hope and talent? England gave the world: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, a universal language the world uses still to this day. I am fearing it's all going down a liberal sinkhole of self-loathing. It's our history that makes all Brits want to go out on their shield, not give-up and wave white flag. Okay, we made mistake. As an Englishman, I truly apologize. But we have to move on and learn. I think we have.

Even I can see now that those that pervade the British media have no interest in Britain. I've always been neutral and I suppose as one gets older and matures into a fully grown adult one becomes more conservative. But the constant slating of Britain, it's colonial history, etc. etc. It's really getting to me now.

I don't think it's embarrassing to be proud of being English without being labelled a racist or fascist. I think it's good to be English (British). I always laughed to myself when I filled-out my USA immigration form on the plane, not being sure if I am from England, or the UK. Who gives a toss? It's all the same thing. As a Union we are strong.

England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland. All the political egos at work need to reign-in their self-absorbed personal hatred right now. We all need to join together to form a strong trading-bloc on the international stage.

OP, please take comfort in the fact that you don't appear to suffer personally from the problem of over-education that you mentioned in your post. Smile

bellinisurge · 26/12/2020 10:09

You mean like the liberal media ignoring Johnson's promise to Parliament that we would stay in Erasmus. Or the liberal media ignoring the shameful situation where locals were passing food to the lorry drivers penned in in Kent. Or that the Polish Army were allowed in to help them. That liberal media?

And you constantly referring to England as Britain is symptomatic of the reasons the UK will likely lose Scotland and N Ireland. Sorry, Wales, you're probably stuck with us.

TeaAndStrumpets · 26/12/2020 10:03

@cdtaylornats

If the liberals of today had been in charge of the Raj I can see then when faced with the burning of widows applauding it as "part of the culture".
Hopefully not many liberals! But that is a good point.

In answer to OP:
DH and I were talking about this the other night. We couldn't listen to any more of the news because of the sneering tone, putting words in interviewees mouths - and all to tell us the Government is crap, Britain is crap, you the viewer are crap.

The lazy media stirred up Brexit by having Farage on the news every single day in the run up to the 2015 election, then again up to the 2016 referendum. If the public didnt want Brexit before 2015, they'd been convinced of it by the time of the referendum by the mainstream media. But those journalists were surprised by the result because they themselves were only listening to Twitter (not a cross-section of society) and their colleagues and smug mates in (north) London.

Post the referendum they ditched Farage but the damage was done. Now they switched to telling us everything the Government did was crap, everything the EU wanted was totally reasonable. The UK should start negotiating from a position of letting the EU have everything they want, all the better if it damaged UK sovereignty.

The 2019 election is announced. The media still havent understood their part in the 2016 referendum, are still only listening to Twitter and their mates and are flabbergasted by the Conservative landslide to deliver Brexit that the media encouraged. If they'd stopped telling the electorate they were stupid, the result might have been different.

This year we've repeatedly been told by the media that the UK is crap, the EU is great (I should point out here that I'm a Remainer) and they've not understood that the Government would not have lost votes if we'd ended up with No Deal - a lot of people wanted that - they were convinced of this by the media having Farage shoved down their throats a few years ago.

As it is journalist will be pouring over the trade agreement trying to find the compromises (which are a good thing) to enrage either side - with the central message that the UK compromised too much/little.

And through all this the journalists are still in a job, still in a nice home, still comfortable, still smug. They have little to lose. If they talk down our country, eventually it has an affect on our happiness, on our standing, even on jobs.
But they will be fine. They remain comfortable.

bornatXmastobequiet · 26/12/2020 09:45

None of this makes any sense. What liberal media? Why are the Kinks significant? What shield? Who has learned what?

So many questions. Weird.

Donotgogentle · 26/12/2020 09:41

Do you mean liberal media like the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Express op?

If you’re including them in your anti-Britain agenda you’re so far right that I query your intentions here.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/12/2020 09:34

Yeah the U.K. gave the world Thatcher, Boris and Brexit. I’m mortified tbh🙈

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 26/12/2020 09:32

The Kinks were shit. Didn’t like the Beatles or the Stones, they were before my time. They were never my ‘universal language’

I was a Goth. We hated mainstream shit😁 and Thatcher!

Goodbye2020Hello2021 · 26/12/2020 09:12

England gave the world The Beatles, The Stones, Kinks

Dear God... Grin

*things obviously

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 16/11/2020 15:57

@TeenyTinyDustinHoffman I often feel like that on MN.

It is always right to challenge thinngs that are inaccurate. My MIL is a bit like this, feels that 'people are putting the country down' and if racism /sexism / discrimination of disabled people weren't discussed then they would cease to be an issue. The fact that people think these real issues are a media construct is a problem. Many people are instead now getting their information from pressure groups on social media which presents another problem as it is often wildly inaccurate but presented as fact.

TeenyTinyDustinHoffman · 16/11/2020 14:36

Why the fuck did I bother writing that out? Confused

TeenyTinyDustinHoffman · 16/11/2020 14:35

I've never felt like this before. But over the past few months its become obvious, at least to my tiny brain, that the mainstream British media is trying to send the British public down a rabbit-hole of self-loathing.

Which areas of the British media are doing this? Because with all the sycophantic fawning over the royal family (yes, yes, congratulations! You were born!) and the "We won the war" from people whose closest connection to wartime is that they watch a lot of Dad's Army, all the references to the Good old days... The media seem fairly pro British to me.

Over educated? Hmmm, I'm not sure there's such a thing, really. The universal language? You realise Britain didn't just send out dictionaries across the world so that the barbarians could prosper under one universal language (which it isn't, by the way.)
Middle class? Yes, I remember my middle class ancestors. Stupid, ivory tower Irish immigrants- I did wonder why they kept going on and on and on about the British atrocities in Ireland and the fact that their own language was now confined to Gaeltachts. And how, when they came over here to work, they were beaten up in the street by the proud salt of the earth British citizens and treated like criminals by the oh so infallible British police force. It must have been because they were a middle class liberal elite, of course!
Still, I do like the Beatles.

It's our history that makes true British people go out on their shield. There is no reason to be shamed about our history.

Now, I wasn't born when the British grew rich from kidnapping and selling Africans. Or when they allowed 10 million Bengalis to starve or when Churchill decided the fate of millions of Europeans on the back of a piece of scrap paper. I was not there for the opium wars or the slaughter of Australian aborigines.
But, as long as Dave (b.1965) gets to say "We won the war!" He also has to say "We committed atrocities across the world, profited off of them and still reap the benefits today." It cannot be "We did the good thing, they did the bad thing."
What would probably be the best option is if Dave and all the other Dad's Army fanatics learned as much as possible about the history of their country, the good and bad. They are not obliged to feel ashamed of it or proud of it but they should recognise that the reason they live in a comparatively rich nation is not only due to the creativity, innovation and genius of individuals but also due to the persistent cruelty of individuals as well.

No, I don't remember that. You've said the next bit already. I'm not sure what you think you're surrendering to? And no, we haven't learned. At least, you haven't or you wouldn't come out with guff like this. And what do you mean by move on? What, in practical terms, does that mean for you?

Even I can see now that those that pervade the British media have no interest in Britain. I've always been neutral and I suppose as one gets older and matures into a fully grown adult one becomes more conservative. But the constant slating of Britain, it's colonial history, etc. etc. It's really getting to me now.

Why? Unless you support it, there's no real reason why it should bother you. It's quite hard to put a good spin on colonialism that stands up to any sort of scrutiny. British media have no interest in Britain? Anything to back that up with?
And, though it is of less importance, no, conservatism is not part of being a fully grown adult. That said, conservative is a rather euphemistic way to say "genocide apologist".

English and British are not interchangeable words. I would agree with you that it's a shame that "proud to be British" indicates a racist for many people. Unfortunately, of all the people I've met who've described themselves that way, very few have done anything to dispel that stereotype.

England, Scotland, Wales, N. Ireland. All the political egos at work need to reign-in their self-absorbed personal hatred right now. We all need to join together to form a strong trading-bloc on the international stage.

God, if only we'd been part of a strong trading block. If only such a thing existed... I'm sure Britania's great leaders wouldn't be so self interested as to take us out of it. I mean, who cares if THEY profit off it, when they have our best interests at heart.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 16/11/2020 14:03

I wish we were slipping down a liberal sinkhole. It would be a much nicer place to live.

Woahisme · 16/11/2020 13:54

I fear we're sinking down a liberal sinkhole of self-loathing perpetrated by an over-educated liberal middle-class whose only interest is their own wealth.

Can you be specific about who you are referring to? Britain has done some great things in history, but many many more bad things. It would be foolish to not acknowledge both, otherwise how would we ever learn from history?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 16/11/2020 13:42

I’m old. I absolutely support the slatingof Britain. It’s an embarrassing place to live.

The Beatles and The Kinks? Who cares about them? I’m 57 and don’t give a shit. In fact l dislike them intensely as the 60’s were constantly shoved down my throat in the 89’s when l was a young adult.

Britain is an isolated little pathetic country run by a knobhead. I don’t think it is actually being slated. I think it’s being truthful.

Boris😂
Brexit😂
Little Engerland mentality😂
Cummings😂
Populism😂

Britain ( or England) is a fucking joke country

What’s not to slate

Hi everyone, It IS possible to chill out about all these issues by having a laugh about them - and we all need a laugh, in the stress of this lockdown.
I've been cancelled twice this year and subjected to shed-loads of social media abuse, but I've stood up to the haters and have now published my own cartoon review of "2020, The Year We Were All Cancelled!". Its an A4 paperback, full colour, free speech and anti- authoritarianism throughout.
You might consider getting it as a Christmas present, for the snowflakes in your life, for those cosy chats over the Christmas pud!
You can see my cartoons weekly on uncancelled.co.uk and here is a thoughtful review, with links:

If only people weren't so well educated and liberal we'd be much better off. Ok!! Enjoy your 60s music OP

ZolaGrey · 13/11/2020 11:33

Incoherent ramble.

Come back when you've formed it into something that makes more sense.

OutComeTheWolves · 13/11/2020 10:49

@PaddyF0dder

Certain British people, and a lot of British culture, has a toxic relationship with history. All this constant obsessing over the two world wars, to the exclusion of all else, has reached a sort of delusional intensity.

I guess when you find yourself on the side of the goodies twice, you kind of want to make the most of it I suppose.

Were we the goodies in WW1? My understanding was we waded into a conflict that was none of our business and sacrificed the lives of hundreds of thousands of working class British men in an attempt to preserve our standing on the world stage and then contributed to a treats which placed a disproportionate amount of the blame at Germany's feet, condemned millions of German citizens to starvation and helped create the climate that allowed Hitler's rise to power? It's a genuine question btw I'm happy to be corrected - just I always felt the general opinion was we won but the war in general was a case of incompetent leaders from all sides sending low income boys off to die as part of their game. I mean a lot of the kings/Emperors of the opposing countries were cousins.

I think WW2 could have started the same. I know some people who believe we got into WW2 because of the Holocaust not because of the invasion of Poland. Churchill didn't care about the death camps and in fact they were useful to him because the soldiers employed there weren't fighting on the front line. However I often look back at WW1 in particular and think it wouldn't be allowed to happen now, we have to at least pretend there's a moral justification when we bomb civilians these days.

7Days · 13/11/2020 08:41

I can see what OP is saying.

Colonialism isnt the whole story of British history and its ridiculous to act like Britain is unique, or uniquely evil because of it.

MostDisputesDieAndNoOneShoots · 13/11/2020 08:10

As a liberal, I kind of loathe being governed by a bunch of truly useless populist conservatives who appear to have no plans for anything. Maybe that’s what you mean

Well said @CrypticQueen

It makes me cringe when Johnson and people like him make apparently stirring speeches about how Winston Churchill was one of ours and therefore we never need to rethink anything or be kind or clever or contagious as a nation ever again because WE GAVE THE GERMANS A THRASHING! Similarly the OPs talk about The Beatles at al sounds a bit desperate.

There are lots of great things about Britain and the British and lots of not such good things. We are no better than any other nation though and I would argue that our world view these last few years feels a bit stagnant.

OutComeTheWolves · 13/11/2020 08:03

Erm the British media is pretty conservative (because they offer better financial circumstances for the newspaper owners imo).

You've got England and Britain confused a lot so I'm not sure which one you mean.

We didn't give the world a universal language, we forced it in them via colonialism. I'm fairly sure aboriginal people, Maoris etc etc were already happy with the languages they were speaking.

It's right that the media is critical of us as a country, while it's not always comfortable, it stops us going down the route of a state owned media which operates as a government mouthpiece. I think it's very beneficial, particularly in this era of social media algorithms essentially creating echo chambers and tribal politics, to read opinions and viewpoints that go against your viewpoint. As a left wing, feminist, remainer I can't just read the guardian all day or I'll lose the ability to think critically and change my opinion based on new information.

I do think there's something a bit infuriating about the English two world wars, one World Cup attitude. I remember all of the fuss when a Japenese Emperor couldn't apologise for Japanese atrocities during the war because there wasn't a word for sorry in Japanese - there's definitely a subset of people who believe that Germany and Japan should forever hang their heads in shame but have no idea that we had brutal concentration camps in Kenya that we've (to the best of my knowledge) never apologised for. I believe education is the key but many people baulk (sp?) at teaching our colonial past.

The kinks are great though.

  • I used we because I'm both English and British so it works. I know not all of Mumsnet is!
