Tactical vote or vote with my heart

I live in a Tory constituency that's been identified as one that can be taken by Labour if tactical voting is employed. I really don't want our Tory MP back in but am not usually a Labour voter and have generally voted Lib Dem or Green. Lib Dem and Green don't stand a chance in my city though.

Do I vote tactically or with my heart knowing that my vote won't achieve anything?

For me it's more important to get rid of the Tories and stand a chance of a progressive centre left coalition with parties who might reign in some elements of the labour leadership.

I always vote tactically to unseat the Tory candidate.

In my constituency the Tory MP is a good guy (for a conservative). But I have no choice but to try to unseat him because the party as a whole is destroying the U.K.

Vote tactically, and if Labour get in and you want to influence policy then join and get involved. One of my ideas was presented to conference this year, there's a genuine chance to get your views heard and put into action.

(And there's a really wide range of views across the party, so lots of chance for friendly debate too.)

That tactical voting link is pointless when it names every other party, it’s better to look at the sitting MP and see if not Tory do they have a good majority; vote them to keep them in, likewise if story are your MP vote the party with the nearest votes in 2017.

I think voting tactically is buying into the game playing of politics. I am not going to vote.

I agree @LolaSmiles. This swinging backwards and forwards between left and right doesn't seem to get us very far. What one side implements, the other side undoes as soon as they're in.

I'd like to see a form of proportional representation in parliament with more coalitions and minority governments that need to work across parties in the national interest but that's unlikely to happen any time soon.

I'm a lib dem member who is voting tactically for Labour. It is far more important to me that as don't end up with a Conservative majority that allows them to push through an extreme right wing agenda.

Vote for who you feel would do a good job

If you vote tactically and get the wrong candidate in, you have a 5 year wait until you can rectify it

I would always vote in line with beliefs, because otherwise people's true preferences will never be known and the two-party system is endlessly reinforced.

But understand why people might do otherwise.

Definitely vote tactically! Until we have proper proportional representation a vote from the heart is wasted. I absolutely loathe first past the post. In my native Scandinavian country with proper proportional representation, every vote is a vote from the heart.

You are all right. I just needed a bit of straight talking! And the outcome is the most important - getting the Conservatives out.

@makingmiracles You want to vote Labour but need to vote Lib Dem and I'm the opposite so I'll just think of you as my vote partner. Grin

With so much at stake, this election of all elections is one in which to vote tactically rather than waste your vote in a gesture that no one else will notice. Think how you will feel if you vote Lib Dem or Green and the Tory candidate beats the Labour candidate in your constituency by one vote. Such things are not impossible. In North East Fife constituency in the last general election, the SNP beat the Lib Dems by just two votes.

Also here greens etc have made a pact to not put forward anyone and vote Lib Dem to try give the Lib Dem a better chance at unseating. Fingers crossed it works.

Tactically. I don’t not want to vote Lib Dem, nor did I i the last election but they had a seat here and were unseated by a Tory and are closest to unseating that Tory again. Desperately want to vote labour but they are miles behind here in what is quite a wealthy/asset rich constituency. The way I see it is unseat the Tory, try and get the closest candidate seated from another party then hopefully vote with heart and the next election in a few years.

Not sure the getvoting site is using the best info though tbh. In my constituency (safe tory seat) labour have ALWAYS been the runner up, with the exception of the recent European elections, where the Lib Dems got a slight increase. Site is saying to vote lib dem, when that's not going to work here
