Uk media left bias

Usernameaintit · 03/11/2017 08:46

Does anyone think the media in uk is all far too much to the left? No documentries on any scandles or bad politics from hillery or obama but channel4 especially non stop anti trump documentries. The media telling half the voting population they were wrong for voting brexit? Brexiteers know about immigration and nothing else it would appear? Can anyone name any right wing satire or programme other then top gear? I feel i live in a country where to have leftiest views is ‘safe’ to have right wing views and you are held with contempt. I would bend over backwards to help somebody vote for a party i cant stand. But i dont feel many on the left would do the same for us of a sometimes right wing persuasion. Any thoughts?

I must admit I read about yet another blooper by Ms D Abbott about 16 being young enough to die in the army, but not to vote, and yet some papers mention it and some don't. This is a position of importance that is her job, how can she keep making these mistakes.

Yet Jeremy Hunt is allowed to tell blatant lies and that's barely reported? What is worse, a genuine error or an out and out liar?

If you're not aware, he repeatedly stated there are 30,000 more mental health professionals in the NHS than in 2010. The real figure is less than a thousand (and the number of MH murses has decreased), at a time when demand for services has risen exponentially. Then there's the claim that the UK has had the biggest expansion in Europe under his watch, another blatant lie, the number of MH beds has reduced by a few thousand and waiting lists are through the roof.

Then there's May (and Hammond) and their 8p breakfasts. And we won't get started on Boris.

My point being, the media places a lot of focus on trivial mistakes made by Abbott, but is happy to gloss over far more fundamental mistakes and lies from members of the cabinet. Why are they not being held to account in the same way?

“If you dont think you have done anything wrong why should you resign”

Sorry - I should have been more clear, it’s not double standards. The Tory admitted he had done wrong and resigned (assume this is Fallon, although I suspect there was more to it than what has been reported), the Labour MP is denying the allegations so hasn’t resigned (assume this is Hopkins).

Most of my UK media is consumed thru BBC Radio. No shortage of Righties there. John Humphrys, Stephen Nolan, Matthew Parris, Peter Allen, Edwina Currie, Nick Robinson, Jeremy Kyle, to name a prominent few presenters. I gather Nigel Farage has a show on a London radio station (who did eject Katie Hopkins).

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 04/11/2017 20:53

No worries just

Though i should clarify that the parents permission bit i was blethering on about was for marriage ...not joining the military

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/11/2017 20:50

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up for me Rufus

For Wowababy:

That’s the issue- you cannot have a tolerant society which tolerates intolerance, something which it pleases much of the right to ignore.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 04/11/2017 20:48

Is it kelvin hopkins?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 04/11/2017 20:32

just

No they dont go into combat til 18

Its like the married at 16 though...as far as i know you cant do it in most of Britain without your parents (16) or one parent (17) permission

That might have changed though Smile

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 04/11/2017 20:31

One man has admitted misdemeanours and resigned, one denies doing anything wrong and hasn’t.

Still confused as to where the double standards are

If you dont think you have done anything wrong why should you resign

Ive no idea who we are talking about so i dont know what evidence there is either way (labour guy...assume fallon is the tory...i do know one labour guy has been suspended, as far as i can see they are all fucking at it!)

But two different people deciding to do two different things isnt double standards

OP I agree with you! Most of the people I know do. It's just I find the left shout the loudest and don't seem to have room to accept that the opinions of others who might disagree with them are equally as valid. My left wing friend summed it up once during a debate about whether those bakers should have been forced to make that cake for the gay couple by saying "But doing things my way makes the world a better place so if people disagree they should be forced by law to do it anyway"

Basically there was no room in his mind for any flexibility or acceptance for other people's views or feelings if they were not how he thought they should be. He has his view of how the world should work and everyone should be forced to comply.

Most of my circle who voted Brexit for example stay quiet about it and get on with their lives. Mostly because the INers are so rude and personal in their attacks. Calling them stupid or racist. It's those that voted IN who are vocal on social media and forums and therefore it seems skewed.

That's why the result of the referendum was such a surprise I think.

I think this both crosses over into and fuels the media

JustAnotherPoster00 · 04/11/2017 19:20

I must admit I read about yet another blooper by Ms D Abbott about 16 being young enough to die in the army, but not to vote

Isnt that the case though?

DeadButDelicious · 04/11/2017 19:18

Are you Andrew Lawrence? The deeply unfunny comedian trying to carve out a niche in 'right wing comedy' which seems to mostly be sulking about not being invited on game shows because of the 'leftist agenda'?

AgnesSkinner · 04/11/2017 18:56

Rufus - “one man has resigned and one man hasn't...”

One man has admitted misdemeanours and resigned, one denies doing anything wrong and hasn’t.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 04/11/2017 18:20

Wait

one man has resigned and one man hasn't...how is that double standards

mummmy2017 · 04/11/2017 18:10

I must admit I read about yet another blooper by Ms D Abbott about 16 being young enough to die in the army, but not to vote, and yet some papers mention it and some don't. This is a position of importance that is her job, how can she keep making these mistakes.
Then a Tory quits due to misdemeanours yet a labour person doesn't, sometimes the double standards of each side amaze me.

silenceisadistantmemory · 04/11/2017 09:55

There is no such thing as unbiased reporting.

It does not exist. It is basically impossible.

The intelligent thing to do is to get your news from lots of different sources and make up your own mind.

Drives me mad when people complain about bias!

Carolinesbeanies · 04/11/2017 08:56

Totally agree with everything lessworried has said in here.

The media, across the board, is swilling around in a cesspit of bias and political comment. Most of the time quite openly. Its indeed 21st century attempts at social engineering. The issue is, not many now take a blind bit of notice, and thats upsetting the great and the good. (Not to mention the pollsters)

We used to mutter that 'apologies' took up a tiny paragraph on page 7 of some rag or buried deep in a website, now, they dont even bother with the 'apology'. Accuracy and factual reporting has been replaced with reams of 'could's , 'mays' and 'ifs', for one purpose only. Political comment.

lessworriedaboutthecat · 03/11/2017 22:15

Lets be honest most comedians, actors and writers aren't creative eccentrics anymore their mostly middle class privately educated twats peddling their safe bien pensant views to people who want to have their own prejudices fed back to them.

foodiefil · 03/11/2017 11:26

It sounds like the majority of people in media could be left wing leaning, I mean entertainment media.

Who would have thought that people like comedians, actors, writers, the creative often eccentrics of this world could be left wing?

Honestly I just don't know what the world is coming to anymore

PlausibleSuit · 03/11/2017 11:21

To the comedy point, I think right-wing satire is just hard to make happen. The idea of satire is that it (metaphorically) lobs a brick through the window of large institutions like governments and corporations, and the people who run them. Because the people who run them tend to be right-wing, there's less incentive to throw the brick, because chances are it'll land on your own foot.

If you see right-wing politics as based around the idea of protecting and preserving what already exists, again, the concept of maintaining a status quo just isn't funny.

And because the right-wing is seen as the ones with all the money, a right-wing comic poking fun at the left would have to be exceptionally skilful not to come across as spiteful and mean.

Also, I think when you say 'right-wing comedians' people tend to think of old-school sorts like Jim Davidson, Roy 'Chubby' Brown, Jethro and so on. Those acts are not only offensive - although I did enjoy Roy 'Chubby' Brown satirising himself in League of Gentlemen - but the style is hopelessly out of date. Maybe the production bookers are nervous about putting right-wing comedians on panel shows because they worry there will be off-colour jokes about race, women, gay people...

To news media... I think the idea of bias in media is sad, full-stop. Once upon a time people watched the news for the facts. Now they select their media source based on who is going to spoon-feed them the warm diarrhoea that's most like their own, whether that's the Daily Mail or the Canary.

ArcheryAnnie · 03/11/2017 11:19

lessworriedaboutthecat you do know that just as many people complain to the BBC about their right-wing bias, no? If they are getting complaints from both sides, that should tell you something.

Look at how often Nigel Farage - the man who repeatedly failed to get elected as a British MP - is on Any Questions and Question Time. What's that if not right-wing bias in those flagship political programmes?

lessworriedaboutthecat · 03/11/2017 11:05

I don't have to pay for the Mail, Sun, Express, Times, Telegraph on pain of jail though do I.

sinceyouask · 03/11/2017 10:53

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Um, no. No, I don't. Not when we have the Mail, Sun, Express, Times, Telegraph, etc. Not when the BBC treat today's Labour as dangerously far left loony extremists, and as for ITV and Sky News, anyone thinking they have some sort of left bias has drunk the kool aid.
