Please can someone explain? Will we pay if we leave EU without a deal?

With all this talk of billions of pounds which we are supposed to owe if we leave and talk of continuing to pay after we leave, I am in the dark. If we walk away with no deal will we pay anything like the amounts talked about? If we are able to do that surely the EU will be big losers as well as us! I am at a loss. Grateful for your input as I am bewildered. I voted to remain but must say the shenanigans being played by the EU are showing them as more like the Mafia than a democratic institution.

I get the idea mousse, but, if I were to be business minded about it, why should I help (let’s say) Greece to get its economy up to par, when I could just trade with a country who’s economy is already up to profitable trading?

And, I know I keep on about it......we didn’t join a charitable club to create an idealistic state of Europe, it was a trade bloc.

You trade best if you have money. Investment often means countries become more affluent and then trade more. More trade is good. We want to encourage trading. Investment helps trading.

We help developing countries in the same way.

My point is that we did not agree to todays EU. We joined a trade bloc. Trading. Not funding vast endless projects. Just, you know, trading.

I don’t understand what you mean about a United States of Europe? What does being a trade club vs a federal country really have to do with anything? In any town, city, region, country, or indeed group of countries belonging to one trade bloc, with any form of shared budget, some areas will end up as net contributiors and some net recipients. You’ll get a similar graph for London boroughs, uk counties, countries of the uk, states of the US or Germany etc.

EU isn’t an investors club either. It was meant to be a trading bloc. The uk is different. We agreed to unite as one.

Consider also that some of the Eastern European states currently being propped up are experiencing positive economic growth and will probably move into net contributor range within the next few years. Call it investment.

No different from the UK govt needing to subsidise Wales, Cornwall and other economically depressed areas. wholes swathes of the country are not net contributors.

I was just interested in real terms how much effect the uk would have.
If afte 2019 they need to make up much of a shortfall.
I didn't mean as a proportion of GDP as I just wanted the amount the EU would lose (or not!). I thought we contributed less actually!

Kind of stunned by the chart Olivia’s posted, where’s the unity in that chart? The EU project has never looked so depressing. Entire countries totally dependent on hand outs.

Italy’s a much smaller economy though. Per capita their net contribution isn’t that much different to ours. We are 8th and they are 9th. inews.co.uk/explainers/charts/much-uk-pays-eu-much-get-back/

BBC seems to indicate Italy is fifth largest net contributor.

The UK pays less per capita and as a % of GDP than Italy and many other countries. I found this from a few years ago but I can't imagine it has changed much since.

How many of the 27 are net contributors? I guess France and GErmany- who else?
Does the uk pay in much relative to the rest of the 27?
I have no idea.

I was on a thread recently where a question was asked

olivia and another poster were debating, and i asked for clarification

Olivia was happy to pm me and explained the situation in a very easy to understand manner

So i would agree that although her delivery can be very brusque/rude whatever....it is very lucid

Dh and i were probably very close to voting leave but voted remain for economic reasons...it has been the very rare poster that has explained various points on both sides of the debate in such an easy to understand way

Although i would also say that some posters again on both sides of the debates have been at times very informative

It does seem like a desperate attempt at belittling Olivia's posts, when they are the most lucid, well-written and factual of the many on this thread.

I'm afraid I find the posts from the prolific "other" posters unreadable, not to mention devoid of any actual substance or indeed facts
