I actually thought they would win, and there was nothing anyone could do. Now I think they will lose.

Mouse - you THINK negotiation with Isis will happen. It isn't an 'absolute truth'. There aren't really any parallels to be drawn from history either because it's a new kind of group. It's made of disparate cells, not a military structure and their aim is our destruction.

Interesting thread.

Sionella said people have forgotten what a real Labour government is like and that's so true. The Cool Britannia government was Red Tory, Tory-lite, remember? Not socialist at all.

Jeremy Corbyn is a 1970s person and would create a 1970s Labour government.

Anyone old enough to remember "last person to leave Britain, switch the lights off" shouldn't really be going for that!

(OK, I know a few who are, but they are from rich families and it's largely been a life-long pose).

I am disappointed in TM's campaign and may not vote at all, the headbangers might need to step in - but a vote for a Jeremy Corbyn government would be lunacy on a par with Trump-voting.

Sadly, the "unrelatable woman" effect is strongly at work here, as it was with Hillary.

Vango · 01/06/2017 09:09

I think the general public would have thought the same about the IRA in the 70s and 80s. I'm sure I regularly heard those very same words.

Sionella · 01/06/2017 09:08

One thing that baffles me about Isis supporters - a lot of them are sucked in by the argument that the west kills Muslims. But Isis kill more Muslims than anyone. So why does that appear persuasive Or is it just that they are the wrong sort of Muslims? Sad

Moussemoose · 01/06/2017 09:07

Sittinonthefloor I don't want to derail the thread discussing ISIS, the point is Corbyn was being honest. Negotiations will happen, this is the absolute truth. Politicians patronise the public by saying they will never negotiate because this is what people want to believe but it is not true.

Do you want honesty or not?

NoLotteryWinYet · 01/06/2017 09:05

yes, it's much more comfortable for me to not want intervention against ISIS for the risk of civilian casualties but I support intervention as I also believe attempts to negotiate with ISIS are 0% likely to be successful.

Vango · 01/06/2017 09:04

An attempt at a peaceful solution can never be futile. What's the alternative?

Where is May?

Finished yesterday. 1 June today Grin

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/06/2017 09:04

If Labour don't do well in this election following Mays absolutely abysmal campaign, then they really are in trouble.

makeourfuture · 01/06/2017 09:02

Why no costed plans from the Tories?

Nothing on Brexit.
Nothing on soaring debt.
Nothing on growth.
Nothing on housing.

Nothing at all.

Where is May?

Sittinonthefloor · 01/06/2017 08:57

It's not naive to think that negotiation with Isis would be futile! There is no middle ground to negotiate on, they don't want peace!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/06/2017 08:55

I've enjoyed reading this thread. Thought provoking.

One of the most intelligent threads about the election, in the main.

Spectre8 · 01/06/2017 08:55

The problem with ISIS is they are also killing many Muslims too, they have an ideology based on what they think islam is and how people should follow it and they want people to live by, they don't care if they kill Muslims, British,French etc. They will do it all those people who won't follow their version. I am sorry but you cannot sit down and negotiate with that..how would that go? ISIS saying we want your people to follow our ideology and that is it, they wouldn't compromise on it so where is the negotiation in that. They are killing Muslim imans who follow Islam but because it is not how ISIS want it followed they are deemed an enemy.

Vango · 01/06/2017 08:55

it will happen and may already have started.

Indeed. Margaret Thatcher repeatedly insisted that she would not negotiate 'with terrorists'. And that turned out to be a lie. Was she afraid that her core supporters would abandon her if she told the truth at the time? JC is being honest about his intentions at the very least.

Orlantina · 01/06/2017 08:51

High infllation was not just a UK issue in the 70s.

Yes - this Government has created jobs. Poorly paid, zero hours, part time jobs.

Growth is low. House prices are too high. Rents are high.

Moussemoose · 01/06/2017 08:49

Sittinonthefloor I'm not sure negotiating will help either but the reality is it will happen and may already have started. Why deny it? Why sneer at people for discussing the reality? I thought we wanted honest politicians. Would you rather Corbyn just churned out the same old lies as the others?

makeourfuture · 01/06/2017 08:49

However I don't think he will run the economy well enough to pay for them

Tory Debt has soared. No growth. No plan for growth.

DinnerIsServed · 01/06/2017 08:48

ALL major terror groups end up negotiating - to believe otherwise is to indulge in the naivete you accuse others of.
I honestly can't see ISIS ever negotiating. It's not like the IRA or their like where some middle ground might be possible. ISIS just want the end of the Western way of life and the sort of ideas and beliefs attached to it. They throw men off the top of tall buildings to kill them just for being gay - that's not the sort of thinking that you can negotiate with.

citroenpresse · 01/06/2017 08:47

Worried about 'competence' head of the hive? We are in the Brexit mess because of the Tories. Their inability to run the economy is right in front of us...their aggressive empty posturing about Brexit 'deals' is utterly hopeless. What on earth is more 'realistic' about them?

Moussemoose · 01/06/2017 08:45

Headofthehive55 the high inflation of the 70s was as much Labours fault as the more recent global financial crisis. Politicians take credit or blame for what are often global issues.
I have some knowledge of the 70s and know it was a time of significantly better social mobility, the gap between the richest and the poorest was less and there was more job security. But you can pick any facts to make a point. Referring to a party's track record of 50 years ago does not have much relevance to next weeks election.

Sionella · 01/06/2017 08:44

People have forgotten what a real labour government means.

PuckeredAhole · 01/06/2017 08:44

The beautiful silent majority... shhhhh

Sittinonthefloor · 01/06/2017 08:43

The PLO wanted to be free from Israeli occupation. Daesh / Isis want to create an Islamic state that's as big as they can. They think the whole of western culture is 'wrong' and are a death cult that want to kill us. Not sure a cup of tea is going to help.

Orlantina · 01/06/2017 08:43

Trouble is a lot of young people can't remember the high inflation high unemployment era of labours reign

Do you remember 1997 - 2010?

Pretty certain Labour was in power then?

Vango · 01/06/2017 08:43

why would I want to align myself with the absolute dregs of society?

Gobsmacked.

Headofthehive55 · 01/06/2017 08:42

Inflation today 2.3%
Inflation in the 1970s (similar economic ideas to jc) 20%
