My mum has voted ukip :(

She's already voted by post. Everyone has the right to vote for who they like and I'm glad she's actually voted because she doesn't always. But she doesn't have any interest in the election and has no idea of anyone's policies, she said she chose ukip because she'd heard them mentioned more and thought it might be a nice change. I mentioned some of their policies and she was really surprised and said she'd have chosen someone else if she'd known.

What worries me is that quite a large proportion of the voting population will think like this and just vote for the party they've heard more about.

I am aware that in starting this post I have mentioned them again Grin

Shabba I know who I'm voting for, my vote won't decide the election though - you have every right to vote for who you want to, I have every right to be interested in who others are voting for. It's kind of deciding who'll run the country, y'know...

And as for my mum, I have no idea who she's voting for and we haven't discussed it, but I'm sure she's happy with her choice, why you needed to bring her into it is anyone's guess... unless you forgot to check that I'm not the OP? Grin

If anyone I knew, including my mother, voted UKIP I would cease to have a relationship with them.

God, where do I start?!
EUROPE: they hate European parliament, despite the overwhelming benefits we have from being part of the EU. they're happy to accept money from EU taxpayers though.
FASCISTS: they have links to fascist and far-right groups throughout Europe.
NHS: we should allow people to pay to queue jump.
ENVIRONMENT: ban all teaching about climate change.
MYSOGNISTS: scrap paid maternity leave.
Employers should be able to discriminate on gender, as well as race.
Scrapping regulations against sexual harassment.
RACISTS and XENOPHOBES: jeez - look at their immigration policies!!

Moomin, I haven't a clue why anyone feels that they have the right to stick their noses into other peoples voting rights. Perhaps focusing on your own vote will be more productive?

Your poor Mother probably knew exactly why she voted for UKIP but I can't imagine it would have been nice for her to have had you in her ear. That probably resulted in an excuse to keep you happy. Hmm

It's OK to be disappointed in someone's voting choice. I cannot fathom why people seemingly think that we all must pat each other on the back. If we all agreed, there would only be one party in existence. There would be no debate.

Whole threads would just be "I support UKIP" "Congratulations!" "I support the Conservatives" "Well done!"

I don't like

  • grandparent visitation rights
  • allowing schools to apply to become grammar schools
  • funding free schools
  • approving the right to buy scheme
  • the support for fracking
  • their lack of belief in climate change
  • repealing the Climate Change Act
  • repealing the Human Rights Act
  • leaving the EU

That's too much I don't like, to consider voting for them. I'm far too left wing.

Sadly OP, my dad is voting UKIP. But then, I know him as a racist, sexist and xenophobic prick so I'm not surprised, I've never known him to have an original opinion in all my 30 years. I've been trying to teach him political correctness for the last 10 years and I've made not a jot of difference because I surpassed his IQ level when I was 11

Unpopular opinion, but people should have at least a vague idea of what the political situation is, or at least what the political parties stand for, before they vote.

We are definitely now in an age of new politics. it is the end of the old established two party system, it is never coming back and UKIP is now the third largest party by polling. So this election is historic, it is the end of the old century long two party system.

The Sunday Express's leader spells it out.

"On Thursday, Britain will vote in the closest General Election for a generation. The days when our collective fates were parcelled up between the old order of Conservative and Labour are gone. They will never return, for the ground has irrevocably shifted. No party has done more to churn the landscape of British politics than Ukip."

I agree carol decker. There's no "well done" about wasting your vote - opting for a party with policies you don't even agree with. I would feel sad too, OP.

claig, I'm reasonably well informed about politics, but I have no idea what you mean when you refer to UKIP's 'earth shattering importance to our new politics' Confused. I must have missed that bit - I've just seen lots of embarrassing gaffes, and some (very) thinly veiled sexism and racism.

OP everyone is given a clear list of policies - It is impossible not to get this from a number of sources if you spend 3 minutes googling or any time watching the TV. If people can't be bothered, then they get the government they deserve.

Wet please, she isn't ashamed of her mum for voting. More worried that she voted for a party of which she had no real knowledge.

We'll at least she said she wouldn't have voted for them if she'd known their policies. It could be worse you could have a real ukip supporter in the family.
But yes v worrying that people vote without really understanding what they are choosing.
