Having researched this on the internet, I can confirm that Hester's contact does not give him the automatic right to a bonus at all. Its down to 'discretion'.

I have also discovered that Cameron's view on this, it that this is a reasonable bonus because Hester is receiving a lower bonus than last year.

I am perfectly ok with Hester's bonus if it's part of his contract. People should honour contracts. I've benefitted from that concept in opposition to a recalcitrant employer. It took legal action, but some people don't get it the first time.

It's why I suppoirt people in the public sector who've signed up to one thing in regards to pensions and who are now being told it can't be afforded.

It's a contract. Maybe it was even signed by a Labour administration.

Somehow I feel that despite Hester's bonus, Cameron and Co will still claim to be 'cracking down' on excessive pay and bonuses in the city.

I'm glad Hester got his bonus. It puts paid, once and for all, to all the Tory bleating about them trying to make the banks and bankers behave more responsibly by giving shareholders more power in deciding bonuses.

If the 80% shareholder, who also happens to be the government, can't do it, what hope does anyone else have?

exactly, especially when they are dressing up the benefit/nhs/public sector/oxygen (hey, its only a matter of time) cuts as being absolutely necessary, and for the good of the public.
