Look, the governemnt has called it this so that it touches a nerve with ordianry hard working people. They have meetings about this sort of thing, how do we package it up, conversations.

Someone very clever has worked out a twisted way to present it as 26k per year. And look, it's working.

The REALITY is very very different. Read up on it properly and faint with amazement.

Spike. My rent is CURRENTLY £522pcm. It will be going up in April 2012 to £622pcm, and again in April 2013 to £722pcm. That is a rise of £200 in just over a year from now. And that is because, rather than cap PRIVATE RENTS to an affordable level, this government has decided to raise SOCIAL HOUSING RENTS to be 80% of the cost of their LOCAL housing market.

If you are in social housing you won't GET 2k to live off. Not everyone gets 26k. The cap includes housing benefit which varies according to the cost of housing around the country. People in areas with cheap rents never got any where near 26k in the first place.

The cap is an upper limit not an amount that everyone gets.

Spike - I am in what my Housing Association 'calls'a 3-bed house. So they are charging me over £520pcm. (Which, due to the government's meddling, will soon rise to £720pcm). BUT, and it's a big but, my Local Council's Housing Benefit department only 'calls' this house a 2.5-bed house, due to the square footage. (i.e. it's got two SINGLE rooms and a walk-in wardrobe USED as a 'bedroom'). So they will only PAY £480 Housing benefit.

And this is one of the cheaper houses here, being social housing. They haven't done what you are talking about for quite some time. (Though IKWYM, I remember that)

and Shirley, of those 463,000 job vacancies, a scary amount are zero hour contracts, self employed only contracts, 1 hour a day receptionish positions, 5 hours a week cleaning etc.

I've been checking out my local job market and it is horrible, really horrible.

Actual full time jobs, or part time decent hours are like gold dust.

Yes that's changed, I think at first it was capped so you were allowed to keep I think £5pw of the excess, now you don't keep any.

Nope not like that now Spike. Very few rents are available that HB claimants don't have to top up themselves, and if a rent is actually cheaper than the LHA they will only receive whatever the rent cost is and no more.

But spike the people affected are already living in the cheapest example of housing in their area, and for miles around. In the southeast there isn't anywhere you can relocate to give you more outgoings.

If the family did move to somewhere cheaper, they would get less in housing benefit

So they would then be receiving benefits of maybe 18 or 20k per year, but still not have any more in their pockets, AND be living away from family support, and in a poor area with cheap housing which means no jobs and very little chance of getting one.

No one just gets 26k no matter where they live, and so if they live in a shed somewhere they have the whole 26k to spend. it doesn't work like that.

THEY ARE FUCKED NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO

For lots of different reasons some people just can't move.

It is not fair that they get punished for things they can't help.

Even if they can help it and really are sponging feckers why would you support punishing their children because of it? Because it will be the children who bear the brunt of it.
