This is the 3rd thread in a series.

It is for people who are horrified, frustrated and downright sad at the erosion of human rights with respect to how this country is being run, just now and in the recent past

it is apolitical in nature, but of course due to many recent initiatives by the recent govt, there will be rants against our current "leaders"

please join in

I shall post the link to the old threads, our "Too Many Cuts #Frothers" blog that is attracting a lot of widespread attention and a little bit of what we are about in a moment

and if person x is a mother and relapses majorly due to a forced working placement and then is incapable of looking after her child where does the child go? there are huge knock on effects. disability and work capability are not as simple as they'd like to pretend Sad

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 11/12/2011 17:35

what i'm struggling to get is this.

say person x with bipolar and panic disorder is classed not eligible for esa and put on income support. then say they are told they have to go work at tescos and they have a massive panic attack and are totally freaked out and triggered into a manic episode or full on major depression. they go to the doctor who prescribes emergency additional meds to try and get them back on an even keel and signs them off work as they clearly aren't fit for it.

what then? does the job centre say right you didn't do your placement so you don't get any benefit for 3/6/36 months? do they ignore the doctors sicknote in favour of the failed eligibility for esa? or does the person get told ah you can't have income support now so you'll have to 're' apply for esa with no benefits in teh meantime only to be told eventually that you're not eligible again?

how the fuck realistically is this going to work?

TheMouseRanUpTheClock · 11/12/2011 17:13

I just turned on the TV, there is something on about Charles Dickens. It sounds like this government wants to bring us back to how the disadvanted were treated by society nearly 200 years.

ChickenLickn · 11/12/2011 17:09

Garlicnutcracker -

Workfare slavery Mandatory work activity means a lot of benefit claimants will be working, but will be completely unpaid. I can see a lot of honest people being put into great difficulty from this.

Hunty - a friend of mine says DWP info is still reading as there being no conditionality for carers (in receipt of carers allowance) and is worried - where's the info from again?

KateFrothers · 11/12/2011 16:03

Tax calculator here for those who need it: www.taxcalculator.co.uk/

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 11/12/2011 15:56

the childcare 'element' of wtc mmelindor - not the total sum.

huntycat hate to bombard you but when you get a chance could you maybe explain how the UC business effects someone who doesn't/cannot work who is a single mum? will that £500 figure you mention replace ALL benefits? that can't be possible can it??? no one would be able to even pay rent.

sorry if i'm being a bit thick. i have never seen any real details on UC and thought it was still some bs election spin that would never materialise naively.

MmeLindor. · 11/12/2011 15:49

ah, see what you mean. No that is all TCs. Will look for WTC figures.

gallicgirl · 11/12/2011 15:49

Wouldn't think so.

pay is low I saw an advert for a creche worker while I was looking for links for you and it was £7 an hour.

Some of the costs might be due to staff ratios.

For under 2s you need 1 member of staff for every 3 children. I'm not sure of ratios for older children.

Then there's the premises. If a 3 bed house around here costs over £200 000, I dread to think how much the huge houses nurseries use cost.

Insurance?

In your calculation of costs of child care to the government, you would also need to include the cost of free places for three year olds.

garlicnutcracker · 11/12/2011 15:48

Again from Crimestoppers:

When asked how much they think fraud costs the public sector each year, in things like benefit fraud and tax avoidance a little over a third (35%) of respondents said that fraud costs the public sector £9 billion per year. The next most popular choice was a cost of £13 billion (28%).

Lord Freud's own figure is £1billion.

Therefore this campaign is specifically designed to ride on the back of public over-perception of what benefit fraud costs the country. At no point does it address the fact that benefit fraud is far less than people think.

MmeLindor. · 11/12/2011 15:48

Peachy
If you are only paying £200 a month for childcare for 2 kids, instead of £200 a week per child, then it makes a huge difference to your spending habits.

UK is stuck in a spiral of goverment paying for stuff so that people can afford to live overpriced housing and pay for childcare, only to just barely scrape by.

Peachy · 11/12/2011 15:47

No, I meant is that just the childcare element of tax credits, or all the tax credits expenditure in entirety?

Do nurseries make a bomb? Apparently not, although sis drives a new Saab.

MmeLindor. · 11/12/2011 15:45

yes, that is just the TCs. The parents are paying on top of that.

Why is it so expensive? Are the nurseries all making a bomb?

Peachy · 11/12/2011 15:44

Free childcare for all only works if there are jobs for all.

Whereas TCs have absorbed a number of otehr benefits now- for example Income Support for children, what used to be Family Credit for low income families, disability support allowances.

I would imagine it was an initial stab at a 'universal credit' that was never completed.

Peachy · 11/12/2011 15:42

Is that just the TC childcare proprotion though Mme?
Mind, sister manages a Nursery chain (one married to eugenicist BIL) and says she hates the new grants to get poor kids into nurseries as it means they ahve the rubbish children so they bump prices out of their reach, they have a waiting list anyway...

1+1 = 2. As always. Societal control.

MmeLindor. · 11/12/2011 15:41

Why don't they scrap it all and pay for free childcare for all.

MmeLindor. · 11/12/2011 15:39

Right-

Am I reading this right? According to this, the Kindertagestbetreuung in Germany (all state pre-school childcare) was ?11.8bn in 2006

And here they say that TCs cost £23.7bn

So Germany has a bigger population but pays HALF of what the UK pays out for childcare.

ruddynorah · 11/12/2011 15:38

Aaah cross post! We just lose the £38 a month?

CardyMow · 11/12/2011 15:38
garlicnutcracker · 11/12/2011 15:37

New Crimestoppers campaign "Benefit fraud costs each of us £765 a year".

Nazi euthanasia poster "Each defective person costs Germans RM60,000 during their lifetime."

ruddynorah · 11/12/2011 15:37

Does uc incorporate child benefit? So we will have no ctc nor child benefit? Or is the child benefit going anyway due to new income thresholds? Very confusing.

Thankfully not the end of the world for us. Our 'benefits' are about £180 a month which covers my car loan.

CardyMow · 11/12/2011 15:37

On the plus side, RuddyNorah - as you are on less than £42K - the kind Tories will let you keep your Child Benefit...

CardyMow · 11/12/2011 15:36

Because it's Universally Awful for everyone?
