The Pensions Credit means test for pensioners is costing £54 per person per pensioner.

The restoration of the earnings link to State pensions, would cost £5 per person per pensioner.

The Government are sitting on a National Insurance "surplus" of £40 billion.

The Government have a war chest of £50 billion.

The Government are sending £40 million a day to Europe.

There is no way on this planet any Government running this country cannot pay all our pensioners a decent State pension with increases linked directly to British prosperity via an earnings link, but Government's since the 80's have ruled it out, and why ?

Because the right wing in politics do not believe in the role of the State, they are market obsessed.

So lets make no mistake here, no Government of any political pursuation in this country is incompetent. All party's have political ideoligies.

It is the British who are largely politically uneducated, and politically docile, which is why we British have the politicians we deserve.

But the elderly dont deserve to be treated so badly. They should be receiving the support of their country.

Come on Ivanhoe, people are waiting for answers. And you're the man who once proclaimed that you had come onto the internet to educate people. LOL.

scaryteacher · 08/02/2011 11:53

Ivanhoe, just answer the question about the £54 figure you posit please. Is it £54 for each of the extant 12 million pensioners, or £54 for each that applies for credit and thus being means tested?

Magic, I know I'll never get a straight answer, but I'll keep trying!

dreamingofsun · 08/02/2011 10:32

me too mrswobble. that equates to nearly 10 hours work for someone on the minimum wage. why does it take a whole working day to means test someone?

MrsWobble · 08/02/2011 10:23

So what is the source of the £54 figure then? I'm also very interested in that.

ivanhoe · 08/02/2011 10:19

You will always receive a proper answer from me, in exact mathematical corrolation with your own mindset.

Its like for like in this world, and I would have thought that everybody would care enough about the elderly, to try and help, and not hinder.

Scaryteacher

you will never get a proper answer from ivanhoe. There are numerous forums where he has posted those figures over the past few years. The only answer he has ever given to your question is somebody told him.

scaryteacher · 07/02/2011 16:08

""Not every pensioner is means tested"".

Not every pensioner wants to be.

If you'd actually bothered to read my post, you'd have noticed that I did say that. You also don't answer the question about where the £54 figure for means testing each pensioner comes from - is it based on all 12 million, or just those who are means tested?

dreamingofsun · 07/02/2011 15:34

you cannot say that this generation have played their part in longevity terms - they will have retired at a relatively early age - women at 60, men 65 and in the case of where i work at 50. many of the women have not worked at all - or have done so for relatively short periods after raising a family and often PT.

try and get your facts correct ivanhoe and then people might take you seriously

ivanhoe · 07/02/2011 14:02

This generation in longevity terms alone have played their part in Britain through their working lives from working, to raising a family, this should be honoured by the government of the day paying out a decent amount in State pension allowance for all pensioners.

""but if there is only a finite pot of money""

There's always enought money for wars, for Europe, for upholding third world countries.

OP posts:
scaryteacher · 06/02/2011 17:47

No-one is discriminating against the elderly, but if there is only a finite pot of money, and various equally worthy calls on that money, then who is more worthy? Pensioners or needy children?

Not every pensioner is means tested as not every one will qualify for pensioner credit, and not every one, even if they do qualify, would apply anyway, so it seems to me that you need to quantify your £54 per pensioner - is that per pensioner who applies, or all 12 million?

ivanhoe · 06/02/2011 15:34

""Because I pointed out how your idea was unaffordable"".

What you are doing now is descrimating against the eldery, are you aware of this ?

"It is clear to me that you dont give a damn about the elderly's living standards."

Because I pointed out how your idea was unaffordable.

"There is simply no shortage of money in this country for any Government "if" that government wants to fund something elsewhere in the world"

The Government spends nowhere near the extra £100 billion you'd need on overseas projects.

ivanhoe · 06/02/2011 12:22

Well now this is very interesting considering the Meanbs test system for pensionbers is costing 15 time more than the restoration of the earnings link.

It is clear to me that you dont give a damn about the elderly's living standards.

There is simply no shortage of money in this country for any Government "if" that government wants to fund something elsewhere in the world.

But there is always a shortage of money when it comes to grass roots policies.

""The amount of money we'd need to pay for the state pension that you are proposing makes the cost of the Afghan war look like a drop in the ocean""

Prove it ?

To do what you are proposing would cost approximately an extra £100 billion a year, the Afghan war costs around £3 billion, so you've got a lot of money to find to fund it.

dreamingofsun · 06/02/2011 11:48

ivanhoe - 300 per week equates to 20k a year, if you take tax into account. thats more than many of the pensioners would earn when they are working. think you are being a bit unrealistic as per usual.

there's no way they would have paid enough tax or NI into the system whilst they were working to cover this, and why should you ask young people struggling to pay off student debt and large mortgages to pay extra to cover this? Especially since both people in a household are now working or trying to get jobs - many pensioners had the luxury of only 1 working and are sitting on bags of money in terms of housing (have you not heard of equity release?)

ivanhoe · 06/02/2011 11:42

It never fails to amaze me how the wonderful British can turn against the old in this country.

Yes, that's the general self centred apathetic attitude on here.

I agree. Are you referring to newwave's posts on Tory bastards?

AimingForSerenity · 05/02/2011 23:29

My mother has a state pension and a small private pension my dad struggled to pay for. She says she is now better off than she has ever been in her life.

Nevertheless she is still has less disposable money than her sister who has no private pension as she gets her council tax paid, rent paid and God knows what else.

My uncle and aunt have a very healthy bank balance and yet still get everything my mum gets which they spend on their numerous foreign holidays each year.

It is surely not right to just give large amounts of many to all pensioners as some of them are better off than many others in society. No-one group should profit t the expense of others.

How do we fund foreign wars ????????

OP posts:
ivanhoe · 05/02/2011 23:06

What we need is a fair spread of wealth in this country, and the restoration of the earnings link restored so the elderly can once againh enjoy higher state pensions linked directly with British prosperity.
