It was great to see so many of the students gathered today, most of whom won't personally be subject to the proposed hike in fees. It needs people to care about future school leavers. Shame it got out of hand but a point needed to be made.

i would suggest to anyone who thinks that this amount of debt is alright to have at the start of your adult life...go and try it, try living with that burden of debt and stress...not just for a year but for YEARS and YEARS.

imo, i can't see this undermining support for labour. in fact i can't see it undermining support for the NUS either.

everyone knows that it was mostly a peaceful demonstration, and a demonstration for a very worthy cause.

i am so glad that the young in our society can see how these proposals are so unfair and wrong and i am glad they are trying to do something about it. good for them and good on the NUS!

Did I dream it today or did David "cap immigration because it is the root of all evil" Conmaneron actually say that the rise in tuition fees for UK citizens will help Chinese students to come and study in England because it will lower prices for them?

Any destabilization of society is desirable up them Anastasia. But I agree, often trouble makers at protests don't even bother to claim any political allegiance, and are just there for a fight.
Nus certainly will not have condoned or organised the disorder-by the sounds of it the Nus/police briefing prior today did not include this level of violence/attack on property hence the police being caught out. A peaceful (but shouty) march has been the aim.

Dh has been on a number of protests - you seethe hoodies in red and black surge forward, and cause trouble. They are there no matter what. SWP always have a presence but they wouldn't condone violence. I saw the coaches go this morning-alot of staff and proactive students, not people out to fight police (though burning placards, maybe)

Isn't it time we started to protest against these plans? Why the apathy? I don't condone the violence but thank goodness students are actually protesting about something!!

I am appalled at the media coverage of what was an exceptionally good humoured and peaceful gathering. The protest itself was simply not violent. I personally believe that a few troublemakers hijacked the protest- and i doubt that all of them are students. Some may be. This does not create a precedent to write off the NUS as criminal thugs. We cannot however legislate for hideous right wing prejudice, so I suspect that only the unwise few students who got involved in the attempted occupation of Millbank will get criminal records...

The real students hadn't got out of bed til noon so they had an alibi.
