Grandad around

cmsg · Yesterday 15:22

My daughter is two and both grandparents who live abroad sometimes come to visit us.
when I’m changing my daughters nappies or now that she is potty training he doesn’t leave the room. I find it weird and I’d expect him to not want to see it. Am I being weird or is it normal for grand dads not care?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I moved my child away from a room to change nappies as we had a change table in his room. Even at other peoples house i would go to another room for a napoy change and we used the bathroom as we went straight to the toilet and didn't use a potty. I wasn't comfortable do those things in front of others and it felt polite to go somewhere else.

What's the issue sorry?

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · Yesterday 16:57

Do you always leave the room when someone else's child is having a nappy change or using the potty?

I must say it's never occurred to me 😳

Also, does the grandmother leave the room?

CurlewKate · Yesterday 16:58

Good lord. Nope-never occurred to me!

TeenToTwenties · Yesterday 16:59

Well I wouldn't change a nappy in a room we were socialising in, I'd use the bathroom.

newmommy2006yay · Yesterday 17:02

@AintNoPunshineWhenShesGonei not get it lol no one leaves when I do it it's normal idk what'd her deal

MCF86 · Yesterday 17:02

If you don't want other people around you move surely, you don't expect guests to get up and wait in the hallway?!

newmommy2006yay · Yesterday 17:03

@TeenToTwentiesEven just for pee?

Because for a start after changing a nappy I would want to wash my hands.
And I wouldn't particularly want it to be a spectator activity (see the OP).
And surely the bathroom / downstairs toilet is the right place?
Or a changing table in the baby's bedroom.
It just strikes me as obvious.
<maybe it's generational>

Floppyearedlab · Yesterday 17:19

It’s you who should be leaving the room to do it.

newmommy2006yay · Yesterday 17:22

@TeenToTwenties probably I don't really unless if it's a poop I usually change wherever I am in the house I have supplies in every room always go to the table if it's poop

Hadenough32 · Yesterday 17:24

It's you that needs to start leaving for a more appropriate private room eg the bathroom. Life lesson to start teaching your daughter too.

Comeondoreen · Yesterday 17:25

I would always leave the room myself with my child. Bizarre and frankly rude to expect others to vacate.

Equally, if I was visiting someone who started changing a nappy whilst I was in the room, I’d not leave because I’d assume the fact they’d started doing it with me in the room meant they didn’t care about doing it in front of other people.

Just scroll through mumsnet and you will find people discussing how some people change nappies in cafes !!! I myself have seen a mum whip out a travel potty next in a cafe. Most definitely not something I’d do and I think it’s bad manners, but it is proof that many people don’t view changing nappies/going to the potty as something private.

newmommy2006yay · Yesterday 17:28

@Comeondoreen you see I do it anywhere because who is really going to care

What a strange thing to say.

Why would it be an activity of any kind for anyone else?

Well exactly.
But the OP is busy changing her child in a room of other people ...
And other posters are saying why would anyone else care!

Well I don't understand why anyone would care 🤷‍♂️

stichguru · Yesterday 17:37

If you aren't taking your daughter to the bathroom, but are instead encouraging her to use the potty in the room with everyone else, I'd assume that you were fine with whoever else is in the room seeing her do it. If you aren't have a potty in the bathroom and take your daughter there when she needs to go.

Realworld10 · Yesterday 17:38

Really, why? I've never thought twice about it.

newmommy2006yay · Yesterday 17:39

@AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone like honest who is going to care it's normal I'm hardly going to let my child sit in their waist

Well I guess because nappies are unclean, smell, have to be disposed of, the changer needs to wash their hands, you wouldn't have an open laundry basket of underwear in you living room, and it just doesn't seem like the 'right' place to be doing it.

@cmsg
Why don’t you take your daughter to the bathroom to change her nappy?
