drug dependant baby, advice needed

EarthMotherImNot · 03/03/2010 15:20

I've been asked to foster a baby expected to be suffering drug withdrawal when it is born next week.

It is years since I've cared for one of these and any advice would be most gratefully received.

I was lurking here when EMIN first posted it, and revisit it occasionally as, despite losing EMIN by the end of it, it is very life-affirming and even though it always makes me cry, it makes me happy to know that there were and are people like EMIN in the world. Thank you to all of you, you are the ones who make the world a better place.

Pearl97 · 08/02/2026 15:35

It’s lovely people are still finding the thread and realising there are some really amazing people out there.

I try and be more EMIN xx

Woopzies · 08/02/2026 14:30

Cried way too much when I read this thread for the first time. Cried even more when I'd realised Emin had died.

She'll be 16 years old next month. I hope it will indeed be a sweet 16th birthday.

scoobysnaxx · 07/02/2026 21:30

I am so incredibly sad.

ive just taken my first dip in MN classics and read the is thread.

made it 90% through until the time came to give her back and I bawled.

and then bawled again when I see she has sadly passed away really not long after caring for this baby.

what an absolute angel. RIP EMIN. 😭💜

Just read this thread - wow, what an amazing lady EMIN was x

lovelydayIhave · 29/11/2024 17:10

Amazing lady.
RIP🌷

Thank you @80smonster, despite the fact that it will be 11 years this September since she passed, mum still very much remains an inspiration to us and we always gather in her memory to celebrate the good times. Sometimes that will be at her favourite restaurant, other times we will just get a meal from her favourite take out.

Mum would have been very humbled by the amount of messages on her old thread and more so if she was able to help anyone as a result of her experiences. All she ever wanted was to be a mother and even after having me and my two siblings, she had more love to give and fostering, despite the challenges it brings, was something she absolutely cherished.

Although my dad still receives correspondence and photographs from the adoptive parents of a few of the children they fostered, there haven’t been any updates for this particular child. I did check in with my dad before replying just in case.

Thanks again for your kind words, and those of everyone else who has commented over the years ❤️

Always read this when it pops again! RIP Emin what an amazing lady.

The little baby will be 14 now

Yes, Emin {Earth Mother I'm Not} was a truly heroic woman.
A gift to traumatised babies.

When I'd read that Emin had died, I cried.

If anyone is in Heaven , it will be people like her - A wonderful woman. 🌟 🙏 👶

I’m very late to this thread, but just in case @DaughterOfEmin is reading, your mother was an inspiration to all of us, the love and humanity she showed to tiny babies who emerged from terrible circumstances, who she so lovingly nurtured back to good health. We are forever in her debt. RIP EMIN. ❤

mumof2many1943 · 22/10/2022 20:21

Have followed Emin’s posts with interest and love. Was in a similar place as our adopted son’s life was ruined by maternal drugs, his mother took so much heroine she did not realise he was virtually dead with pneumococcal meningitis leaving him deafblind and cerebral palsy . Her posts gave me courage. Sadly my beautiful son died but I still read her posts such a fantastic lady. Hope her beautiful boy is ok

ivykaty44 · 12/10/2022 12:41

I can remember reading this post back in December 2010 when I was terribly I’ll. what an inspiration this foster mum was. The child will hopefully be with a loving family & around secondary school age now.

Jux · 12/10/2022 12:14

I am posting because I want her family to know that even so long after her sad death, she is still inspiring hope and clarity in people.

I have had quite a bad week, and have spent thee morning uselessly crying. Then I read this thread - oh must be at leas the third time - and cried more! But now I know that I can effect change in our situation and achieve some semblance of normality. It is Emin's love and generosity that has inspired me to KNOW I can find a way to make things right for us.

Thank you Emin. Years and years after your sad death, you are still inspiring people!

Thank you Emin, You have helped me find my strength again.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

KevinsChilli · 10/10/2022 08:24

Just read this for the first time and very sad to hear the OP passed away. RIP Emin.

The LO will now be 12 and I’m assuming in a few years will have the “goodbye letter” to read.

stupidannoyingtaxthing · 10/10/2022 08:17

Wow; rarely have I seen a more extreme case of misguided and unnecessary unpleasantness, even accounting for Friday not having read the whole thread.

<waves cleansing wand around>

AdelaideRo · 10/10/2022 08:09

And @FridayTheThirteeth wins the “read the bloody thread” award or at least the “check the thread start date” award.

This thread is from mumsnet classics And the OP is very sadly long dead. The baby featured will be at secondary school.

You need to read through the whole thread. This post is from 2010. The OP passed away in 2013. Here is the link her daughter posted when she passed and said what an amazing lady she was.
