Died yesterday after a mercifully short illness.

In Memoriam

So, farewell then
Beetle.
That was not your real name.

Internet paranoia has made me choose
An alias.
And Keith's mum says that Beetle is
A very good name
For a guinea pig.

Especially one that was black and fat.
That was probably what killed you.
Being so fat
I mean.

E. J. Thread, aged 17 and a half.

Well I could hardly write a tribute poem to someone I didn't know. I used to meet him at the school gate, then we had coffee once or twice.

Threadworm · 22/01/2009 11:34

Absolutely brilliant Vintage.

And he was sleekit! How did you know?

A Tribute to Beetle and Burns

Thro' Heav'n's gate you pattered ere
I caught your glance this day.
Where guinea pigs a' frolic in
Th'eternal fresh-placed hay.

Aboon them a' ya tak your place
We'll ne'er see you mair.
We'll ne'er look upon your face
Nor stroke your sleekit hair.

Whate'er sleekit means, you chose
This day to limpe away,
Or crowl, or crepe, howe'er you left,
You've gan agley.

Goodbye little cavy, now in your gravey
(I don't mean stew - we're not from Peru)

lou031205 · 22/01/2009 11:28

Beetle, although your shape was one of a piggy,
Your worth was that of a thousand Guineas
We shall miss your furry self
But will fondly keep your ashes on the shelf.
We shall not cry, we shall not weep,
But will remember you as you sleep...

Departed but not forgotten. Beetle.

PoloPlayingMummy · 22/01/2009 11:26

Farewell my Guinea, oh so big
'Tis true in life you were a 'pig'
But now asleep in a box of hay
Deep in the earth this freezing day

RIP little Guinea

Merrylegs · 22/01/2009 11:12

Germans have their Meerschweinchens
The French their cochon d'Indes
But you, my little cavy
Were the finest in this land.

(RIP little pig. )

Oh! I forgot! There is a photo of the late GP on my profile!

How sad. But what brilliant poems (especially the dog's).

Cies · 22/01/2009 11:07

LOL, these are fantastic

Threadworm · 22/01/2009 11:02

Here's one from my dog.

Natural prey
Bedecked in hay.

Awesome squeak
And yet so weak.

I heard you munch
I yearned to crunch.

Carrot eater
Jaw cheater.

Reader, if you seek his monument, look at the bedroom carpet.

Picante · 22/01/2009 10:54

Is it wrong that this is making me all teary-eyed?

Hassled · 22/01/2009 10:54

Penelope, I was a bit teary reading that. Can barely see the laptop now.

Threadworm · 22/01/2009 10:53

Penelope, so moving!

Three words Threadworm.
Ge ni ous!

I believe William McGonagall wrote..

Beautiful Guinea Pig as black as this dreadful day!
Alas! I am very sorry to say
That your sadly short life has been taken away
On the Twenty-First day of Two Thousand and nine,
Which will be remember'd for a very long time.

Oh! ill-fated Pig of Guinea so vast,
Tragically its rodent lungs did breathe their last,
Boys and Girls will gather to remember your name
And all men will pray you did not die in vain
On this dreadful day upon which we rage
For Beetle, departed from his silv'ry cage.

Threadworm · 22/01/2009 10:50

Dinner! Why didn't I think of that.

Excellent, wing. They are coming thick and fast now.

Hassled · 22/01/2009 10:49

In moments of profound grief such as this I find the Haiku the most fitting tribute.

On a brighter note
In Peru you would have been
Someone's roast dinner.

Threadworm · 22/01/2009 10:49

Wonderful! I can hear the Betjeman train in the distance.
