DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

I can't imagine chickens showed much more gratitude than a cat?

Chickens are FAR more grateful than cats. And they come when they are called.

@UngratefulFeline , hasn’t he heard the old chestnut:

DOG: You bring me food and look after my every need. You are clearly a God.
CAT: You bring me food and look after my every need. I am clearly a God.

Fizbosshoes · 06/06/2025 09:29

I'm discombobulated that 3% of people who responded think YABU! 🤣🤣🤣

IJWMM · 06/06/2025 09:27

Gorgeous cat 😻

Maybe your DH needs to get his eyes tested - is it possible he mistook the blanket for the cat after said cat had wandered off?

As pp’s have said, the fact that your husband is still breathing is a sure sign that the cat is grateful for your DH’s servitude.

YYYDlilah · 06/06/2025 09:27

His mistake was in being nice to the cat. If you are indifferent towards them, they adore you.

pinkfondu · 06/06/2025 09:27

TEll him the cat thinks he is a dog and he needs to act more cat

Decisionsdecisions1 · 06/06/2025 09:26

😂love this thread.

Could replace ‘cat’ with ‘my teenager’.

HideousKinky · 06/06/2025 09:26

Your title alone has given me the best laugh of the day so far OP.

Freud said time spent with cats is never wasted - they are endlessly fascinating, but you are either susceptible to their subtle charms or you're not, and it sounds as if your DH is in the latter category.

Do you think there is much chance he can be converted?

Um photo which I seem to have failed to upload before.

A cat who can camouflage! Love it!!!

I used to have two cats of that exact colouring and I miss them so much. Cats are brilliant, I absolutely love how superior they think they are!!

Until we married, he had only ever had dogs and chickens.

I can't imagine chickens showed much more gratitude than a cat?

I don’t know how you kept a straight face. He didn’t seriously say that?
It’s actually a little worrying about how that extends… does he expect the children to show gratitude for simply being given a bed for the night? It’s just a scary side of his personality really; I’d be worried what he’d expect from the kids if he actually has to you know, do things for his kids. Especially when they’re older. He’ll be one of those parents who attach strings to everything and eventually, your children will be teens and adults and won’t want to accept a dinner invite because they’ll be expected to fall over themselves to thank him. Bit yucky really, and a very strange form of dominance.

I can’t decide whether or not you’re being serious…

StScholastica · 06/06/2025 09:25

Our cat acts like she's Margaret Thatcher.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 06/06/2025 09:25

Your husband’s the spare, he needs to make peace with it!

TY78910 · 06/06/2025 09:24

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 is your DH ok?

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/06/2025 09:24

Peanutbutterflies · 06/06/2025 08:53

Sorry but your DH is being a bit of a dick.

So is the cat 😂

SporadicMincePieMuncher · 06/06/2025 09:24

Also, the cat is probaby pissed that his bed has been messed up! They generally do not take well to bedding interference 😂

cupfinalchaos · 06/06/2025 09:24

Elsvieta · 06/06/2025 08:55

Dogs have owners, cats have staff. They graciously allow us to serve them, and if we fail to understand that we are the ones who should be grateful, that's our problem. If DH can't deal with that, cats aren't for him.

Exactly this.

Busybeemumm · 06/06/2025 09:23

This is the best thread. Thanks OP for giving us all a laugh. The cat has staff! LTB (the DH not the cat). Only kidding!

ilovesooty · 06/06/2025 09:23

This thread has made my day. 😁

SporadicMincePieMuncher · 06/06/2025 09:23

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 09:10

He doesn’t understand this at all. He treats the cat like a dog and it doesn’t work then DH feels rejected.

That makes sense. He doesn't speak Cat.

LondonLady1980 · 06/06/2025 09:23

Love this!!!

Your post has put the biggest smile on my face on this dreary morning!!

I love cats so, so, so much and their general apathy towards humans is part of their charm.

I would say “Tell your DH not to take it so personally”, but with cats it’s always personal! 🤣

Inertia · 06/06/2025 09:22

Yeah, good luck with that.

Purplebunnie · 06/06/2025 09:22

My little treasure came and hassled me for his biscuits approx. 6 times yesterday. Whose lap does he sit on in the evening - DH. Nearly every bloody day he does this. Little bastard.

Then there are the odd days when he comes and sits on my lap and it's all forgiven.

Edited to add - he'll walk past DH in the kitchen and DD in the lounge and still come and get me to give him his biscuits - WHY!!😿

IttyBittyLittleKitty · 06/06/2025 09:22

I foster cats for a local rescue charity and this made me smile so much! Does your husband not realise that actually it is HIM who must show his gratitude to the cat for allowing him to serve them? Cats are not dogs which is something many people just don't understand! 😂Your husband must now grovel to his overlord and apologise for his foolishness.

Ps. Edited to add, your ovelord is magnificent!

PrettyPuss · 06/06/2025 09:22

And this arrogance and distain is why we love cats.

Todayisaday · 06/06/2025 09:21

This is very funny. Aorry OP.
Your DH doesnt realise cats see us as their slaves and will take their place as Highest Lord of all things in the house. We are but mere cockroaches, subsrrvient to their superior intellect.
How has he not realised this before???
