DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

I think him and the cat should go nc for a bit, it's better for their boundaries ...

Until we married, he had only ever had dogs and chickens.

Did the chickens show him gratitude??? 😂

Waterweight · 06/06/2025 10:26

Nothing to add 😂

Has he never met a cat before?

I literally saved our cat from certain death, nursed her back to life, introduced her to dreamies and cat yoghurt - and when the mood takes her, she pisses on me. Not DH, who did none of those things and is constantly telling her to get off him and leave him alone. No, me. I get the urine. I'd prefer disdain.

Edited

Before I was born,my parents had animals

(they where told they'd never have children-theres now 4 of us-two are a matching set,7 grandchildren and one great grandchild-my mother wants to march up to that doctor-'you said we'd never have kids??eh?eh?)

Anyway, they had a cat and a dog when I was small

The dog worshipped us

The cat hated us all-both where rescues and my parents had nursed him back to health as a kitten-he was treated better than any king, and both parents adored him

Was the cat bothered?

Was he fuck

If he showed any affection it was to attack us kids (he would sit on the back of the sofa to scratch/bite/attack us,hide and leap out at us or bite us when we where alseep)snuggle up to my father just to piss/shit/vomit all over him and it just about put up with my narcissistic mother (he didn't claw her eyes out but she says he attempted it on a nighttime) or try to eat her alive while she slept-he was a master of doing what the hell he wanted, when he wanted and God help who got in his way

He finally died while my mother was pregnant with twins

She missed him so much, they named twin2 after him! (His brother is named after a sheepdog that belonged to her mate!)

His mistake was in being nice to the cat. If you are indifferent towards them, they adore you.

I found this. I like stroking cats and find them fascinating, but I don´t like them on me, I think they sense this and would ignore those who wanted them on their laps while they watched tv and came and plonked themselves on me!

CaveMum · 06/06/2025 10:22

Introduce him to “thegoldenbreakfastclub” on Insta. He will soon learn the purpose of his role as “Spare Human”.

Username197 · 06/06/2025 10:20

I’m sorry if this wasn’t supposed to be funny but I have laughed so hard- you have made my day 🤣 my cat (who looks quite similar to yours!) is spoilt rotten and shows zero gratitude either. I have accepted my place as the cats servant 🙈

If your cat sends a beautifully hand written note you’d better sleep with your eyes open because you’re about to be murdered in the night.

The first picture is almost definitely my cat, even down to the side eye death glare “ F off with your intrusive camera, I am entitled to my privacy as much as any minor royal.” 😺

This quote says it all tbh 🤣 I have two - one very loving, one who wouldn’t piss on me if I was on fire. That’s cats for you!

giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

So just the basics that any cat would expect?

even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

I mean poor cat-no permission asked or given?

Can I advice "The Unadulterated Cat" by Terry Pratchett

It's like an insight into the feline brain.......Grin

More photos so you can decide if it is your cat. They are of the same cat- the lighting changes his fur colour.

DH needs to learn where his place in the pecking order is

My Dad always used to say 'I come somewhere down the pecking order after the budgie', which was correct, but mainly because he was a selfish arse.

When DH and I first moved in together I walked in on their first cuddle just as DH said “he likes me, he’s wagging his tail!” Cue cat attack

This post is why MN should not have removed the laughing reaction.
Brilliant 🤣

xsquared · 06/06/2025 10:12

Your DH should be grateful he has the privilege to serve the cat!

I just can’t even ….is your husband always like this?

I’ve just been away on holidays and the pet sitter reported that my cat did not like having her tummy rubbed. This made me laugh ….she’s a cat & it would be unusual if a cat liked having their tummy rubbed.

How can your husband live with a cat and not know it’s personality?

😂😂😂 Has your DH ever met a cat before? What a twat! Maybe the cat might like him more if he gave it attention all the time, not just when you’re away. But probably not, because it also knows he’s a twat 🤣

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 06/06/2025 10:08

I feel his pain:

Our cats - two black cats (M/F siblings , he is shy )
Y'know how black cats are 18 times less likely to be homed . Especially a shy black cat . So two black cats ... the odds against them are high .
Ours were CPL , I was tasked with looking online for cats (we wanted two , bonded) and finding a glazing company to do a cat door in glass

Celia Hammond , CPL, Blue Criss any rescue has Thousands of black cats .

Male loves DD
Female loves DH
They tolerate DS
They actively dislike me Sad

I sometimes bribe them with chicken or a scrap of cheddar .. For a nanosecond they pretend to like me .
They stay with us as they worry about us adopting some "decent" cats who couldn't cope with me . <sigh>

ERthree · 06/06/2025 10:06

Oh this had made me laugh. Doesn't he grasp that the cat is king?

Echobowels · 06/06/2025 10:04

Loving the notion of low, mid and high level cats, @UngratefulFeline 🤣

Your boy is a beaut.
