DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

If your cat sends a beautifully hand written note you’d better sleep with your eyes open because you’re about to be murdered in the night.

The Cats couldn't be arsed buying me a birthday card , they just piggybacked on the card DD bought . It even looked suspiciously like DD handwriting ...........

But , no Horses Head on my bed so I;m claiming the Win here

Duckfeather · 06/06/2025 10:46

I’m just in awe that it appears your overlord uses the bed you bought him for its actual purpose?? I cannot tell you the sheer amount of beds, cat trees and scratching posts we have bought over the years for our boy.

Does he use them? Does he fuck. Rips our carpet to shreds and sleeps wherever is most inconvenient for us at the time - usually halfway up the stairs or on the one bit of duvet we need to pull back to actually get into our bed.

Love him to bits but he’s a total dick. He’s a cat.

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 06/06/2025 10:44

All 3 of my cats are extremely affectionate with me and my husband, but we have been building those bonds since they were 10 weeks old.
He can't do it for one weekend and expect the cat to love him. It takes time...

Also that kind of attitude always transfers into how someone treats cats generally, and they can sense it.

Cats are extremely loving and can show gratitude, but they are also very good judges of character.

People who don't like cats or talk this way tend to have issues with people who have strong boundaries and also they are often problematic with consent. I've had this proven time and time again in my life.

Dunnowotot · 06/06/2025 10:44

Cat doesn't show gratitude 😹 Doesn't you DH know it's called Catitude 🤘

daisychain01 · 06/06/2025 10:42

LTB @UngratefulFeline I'm amazed he's made it to adulthood not realising the psychology of a cat. Next thing you know he'll be submitting a court action that the cat has violated his human rights. Can you make him a bumper sticker -

Cats are dicks, get over it.

Gonehome56 · 06/06/2025 10:42

🤣🤣🤣🤣

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 06/06/2025 10:40

I love this post. Imagining your DH fluffing the cat’s bedding and looking crestfallen that he didn’t get so much as a thanks from the ungrateful pet.

Whatthewhatthewhatyhe · 06/06/2025 10:38

This is hilarious 🤣

Cats are cats - they’re ungrateful , bossy and rude but they are darn cute !! 🤣

Electricbananaboat · 06/06/2025 10:38

This has cheered me up this morning, thank you!

I have a cat that might respond to a whistle if she feels like it. She actually once went outside to vomit then came back in. It was years ago and hasn't been repeated (the going outside bit, I've cleaned up loads of vomit) but I was and still am SO PROUD.

How the fuck did you not laugh in his face? Ridiculous man. Cat's sussed him out.

lunaswand · 06/06/2025 10:37

I think this about my cat, he is extremely ungrateful considering he came from a cat home & I do remind him of this when he bites my foot in the night, refuses to eat because it's in the wrong bowl, shrieks his head off constantly if it rains but he pays absolutely no attention at all

NotThatWitty · 06/06/2025 10:36

Your DH should be showing the cat more gratitude. For ... well, just being in the same room as the cat.

(P.S. Your cat is adorable! 😍)

KT1113 · 06/06/2025 10:36

This is the maddest thing I've ever read 😂

My cats hate me, they definitely think they're better than me. I've fed them every day for 5 years and not so much as a nod of the head from them.

Topseyt123 · 06/06/2025 10:36

Cat should show gratitude! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Is your DH a comedian?

Our cat (sadly long departed now) used to show gratitude by various means. When he was young it was by bringing back dead animals he had caught, and the occasional live frog or toad, one of which he once placed in DH's walking boot, giving DH the fright of his life when he next tried to put it on as the thing wriggled around. DH had to go out into the garden to evict it from his boot. That would please your DH.

He would also want to sit on whatever seat you were sitting on at the time, and I don't mean on your lap. He would want you to get off the chair and would try to push at you sometimes if you wouldn't play ball. I did give him short shrift when he did it to me, but he still never gave up. 🙄 It didn't matter how many other seats were free at the time, he always wanted the particular one you were sitting on for himself.

I remember him doing this to my DH too, who was sitting at the kitchen table one weekend morning reading his newspaper. Cat wanted the seat so he yowled at DH from the floor but DH had no intention of moving. Cat then sprang onto the table, sat right on top of the open newspaper, yowled very loudly at DH, then lay down and curled up on it so that the newspaper couldn't be read anyway. 🤣🤣 I think he was giving DH a message really. 🤣🤣

He was a character, our old cat! We do miss him

Your cat is beautiful and your husband should be grateful that he is even allowed to breathe the same air as this divinity. Being a superior being is normal for cats. At least yours isn't a tortie - when it comes to diva behaviour, they leave Madonna and Mariah in the dust. The two we've had to date made it absolutely clear that if they could get decent staff, we'd be out on our useless bottoms.

Absolutely!

Figcherry · 06/06/2025 10:35

Whoops wrong thread.

Strictlymad · 06/06/2025 10:35

Best thread all week 😂😂😂

lolalopp · 06/06/2025 10:34

I think yabu because the cat really needs to meet your Dh half way here. Compromise is the only way a relationship can work. Have you discussed this with your cat? Perhaps he could bring Dh a mouse as a peace offering?

user2848502016 · 06/06/2025 10:33

DH just isn’t a cat person is he?!

ruethewhirl · 06/06/2025 10:33

Sounds like there's a very good reason why the cat doesn't like your DH! I'd swat him too, I'm team cat all the way!

But seriously, he's being an idiot. IMO cats believe we are there to serve them, it's one of the things I find oddly endearing about them. I've owned cats for over 25 years and I've never once seen a cat show any signs of 'gratitude' 😹in all that time. Affection, yes (albeit only on their terms 😹), but it sounds like your DH's manner around the cat might not exactly be conducive to winning its affection.

RunningJo · 06/06/2025 10:32

I kind of understand his point... I actually said to my DH recently that I'm beginning to think Snow White wasn't actually based on real life. I am sick of feeding the wild birds and not once do they fly in and start making beds or opening curtains. Not at ounce of appreciation so far.
Cat needs to step up and perhaps make the occasional cup of tea at least

GreenWriter · 06/06/2025 10:31

😂😂😂 YANBU

ThomasinaTankEngine · 06/06/2025 10:31

YANBU
DH needs to get over himself and accept his place in the pecking order. If he expects gratitude, he should’ve gotten a dog. Tell him to read ‘Dog’s Diary vs Cat’s Diary’ 😁

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 06/06/2025 10:30

My DH still bears a scar (more than 20 years on) from being introduced to the girl cat I had when we met, and thinking it would be a good idea to ruffle her under the chin.

Present girl cat is a proper daddy's girl, though!
