DH says cat needs to show more gratitude

UngratefulFeline · 06/06/2025 08:52

I’ve been away for a few days and DH managed the kids and the dog just fine.

He’s upset with our cat though and says he made a real effort to bond with him by giving him treats, protecting him when our dog had the zoomies and making sure his bedding was fluffed.

DH said the cat gave nothing back, blanked him and even swatted at DH when he tried to pet him.

DH wants to know why the cat doesn’t show any gratitude. I explained to DH very carefully that the reason the cat doesn’t show any gratitude is because it is a cat.

DH says that is illogical and there must be a real reason and “it’s a cat” doesn’t cut the mustard.

YABU- Deeper reason why cat won’t show gratitude
YANBU- it’s a cat.

I feel his pain:

Our cats - two black cats (M/F siblings , he is shy )
Y'know how black cats are 18 times less likely to be homed . Especially a shy black cat . So two black cats ... the odds against them are high .
Ours were CPL , I was tasked with looking online for cats (we wanted two , bonded) and finding a glazing company to do a cat door in glass

Celia Hammond , CPL, Blue Criss any rescue has Thousands of black cats .

Male loves DD
Female loves DH
They tolerate DS
They actively dislike me Sad

I sometimes bribe them with chicken or a scrap of cheddar .. For a nanosecond they pretend to like me .
They stay with us as they worry about us adopting some "decent" cats who couldn't cope with me . <sigh>

I just don't understand the unpopularity of black cats. They are so, so beautiful! MIL has a stunning, panther-like boy who has everyone vying for his (rarely bestowed) attention. Actually, he was a rescued/fostered stray (MIL works with Cats Protection) and at the beginning very affectionate with all the family - until everyone was under his spell and his paws were firmly under the table, at which point he reverted to normal, feline aloofness. My DH would give anything to bring him home, but our twin Bengal crosses would likely kill him (DH) and piss all over everything in protest. They guard us jealously.

Pffft, our current ca(rsehole)t is 16yo DS3s. He cuddles with him, sleeps with him, brings him whole live mice/rats/voles & fractions of mice/rats/voles. He purrs for him, he plays fetch, he gets arsey with DS isn't in bed when he should be. He's even got a miniature door to access DSs room.

The rest of us?!? Me? The moment I open DSs door cat will leap down & meow at me to be fed. He'll come find me to tell me he's hungry. But do I get cuddles?! No I do not!

He stand near me, he'll lay near me (if son isn't there) but can I touch him? No I cannot! He's not even bothered enough about my existence to have a strop about me touching him, he just gets up and walks away like I'm an inconvenient draught!

We are allowed to fuss him in his cat tree though. Then he'll lick you like he's a dog.

It's a good job he's pretty!

Edited

DDs cat treated the rest of us with contempt untill she left for Uni.
I am now top human, DH will do in a pinch but DS is still beyond the pale

Um photo which I seem to have failed to upload before.

Looks a right bastard, Team DH 😂😂

DiaryofWimpy · 06/06/2025 11:15

What a beautiful cat 🐱 ungrateful or not 😂

dontcomeatme · 06/06/2025 11:14

I think this sounds like a truly deep seated issue between the two and would recommend tharpy for this level of abuse. I believe you can find decent flyers in cat cafes with contact info for couples counselling of this sort!

NotMilanese · 06/06/2025 11:14

If ever we needed the laugh reaction back...😂

Death Glare 2

That is a cat that gives no fucks Grin

Your DH needs to understand that cats don't show gratitude - the humans should be grateful to them for the cat even allowing a human in its presence.

HRTQueen · 06/06/2025 11:09

Beautiful cat op

Oh dear you DH obviously doesn't understand his place in your household and that he needs to be grateful such a magnificent creature allows him to be in his presence

DH had never had a cat before he lived with me.
Not long after he moved in I had to go away on a course for 4 weeks, he rang me at the end of week one and said with awe
"Hopping, these cats - they have ACTUAL PERSONALITIES!!!!!"
He fell head over heels and has been a "cat Dad" ever since
He was never daft enough to expect gratitude though

I love this!

Ramblethroughthebrambles · 06/06/2025 11:06

This thread has given me a laugh. If he wants more explanation, then how about telling him that the problem was that he didn't offer the cat his backside for a sniff? If the cat wishes to bond he will then offer his own. Then hide just out of sight when the cat next deigns to be in the same room as him and report back to us 😅

lowlight · 06/06/2025 11:05

Such a great post!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 06/06/2025 11:05

Your husband needs to understand that the cat is displaying gratitude, your husband just doesn't understand it as gratitude.

Does your husband still live? Gratitude. Are his arms and legs unclawed? Gratitude. Has he gotten an eyeful of the cats arsehole in the last 24 hours? Gratitude.

Ours brought in a rat last night. She did not seem impressed that instead of accepting the gift gratefully, we instead, shouted and swore and chased the rat out of the house again, and refused to let her out to retrieve it. She did not understand our lack of gratitude.

Theres a language barrier there that just doesn't exist with dogs.

Itiswhysofew · 06/06/2025 11:04

Come to my house and experience cat ingratitude 3 fold; plus farm catsGrin

Until we married, he had only ever had dogs and chickens.

You need to get your DH onto Jackson Galaxy on Youtube, so he can learn a bit about cats.

If he's really wanting to be BFFs then he should spend some time playing with dcat daily.

brunettemic · 06/06/2025 11:03

To be fair…cats are dicks.

FatherFrosty · 06/06/2025 10:59

I’m a rare breed of cat AND dog person

they speak such different languages. Your dh is being a dick for not recognising that.

impressivelycunty · 06/06/2025 10:57

I had a high level cat. She hated everyone in our family with equal vigour. Except for my aunt, who hated cats. Whenever my aunt visited, the cat would spend the first ten minutes coughing up a huge and disgusting fur ball on the rug then head straight for my aunt’s lap, dig her claws in and feign sleep for as long as necessary to ruin her day. Pure evil. YANBU.

Your DH is the spare human as far as the cat is concerned. You may have to break this news to him very, very gently, OP. Once he grasps this fact, the process of acceptance can begin!

I was the spare human with our first tortie. She was man-mad. She schmoozed tradesmen and flirted with the local beat bobby. We got a phone call from a neighbour to say she'd turned up at theirs. We went round to find her in the arms of a handsome young student, the trollop. Most of all, she favoured DH over me and regarded him as her property. She'd sit on the kitchen table behind him while he was cooking dinner and if he didn't pay her attention, she'd hook her claws into his waistband and tug.

I was definitely second best. . .unless she was in a huff with her fancy man. In that case, she'd sit on my knee and smirk at him as if to say "I don't need you. I can pull any time I like!" She was a legend and living with her was a lot of fun. ❤️

sashh · 06/06/2025 10:56

Poor DH he really doesn't understand it does he.

Mine loves my Dad most, my carer second and I come about 15 after the post man and the Sainsbury's delivery people.

BurningBright · 06/06/2025 10:54

Your DH is completely missing the point.

He is the one who should be showing gratitude given that the cat has deigned to accept him as staff...

gingercat02 · 06/06/2025 10:53

"Lighthearted" presumably OP
If he lives with a cat he knows they are arseholes. End of story

ToadRage · 06/06/2025 10:52

IT IS A CAT!!! Cats do not show gratitude because we should fell honoured to be allowed in same room. They deserve our worship and feeding, treats and cuddles is the way we do this. Its letting you live in their house probably even letting your sleep in its bed, you need to show gratitude, not them.
