Shit... 99% sure Guinea Pig is pregnant

Bit of a disaster... I lost one of my two lovely girls at the start of December. We were devastated, they were like two peas in a pod. I had a post on here at the time.

After just over a week I figured I needed to get another Guinea pig to keep my remaining one happy. Bought from a pet store as we don't have any rescues.... and I'm 99% sure the baby is pregnant 😡

Can't get her in to see the Vet until Tuesday morning.

She's had no vet care during pregnancy, haven't been feeding her any supplements. She was 8 weeks when she came to us, so young to be having babies. We've had her 55 days.

What the hell do I do now?

How much work would more piggies create? You are having to change the bedding / clean the cage already.

looking forward to photos.

TriceratopsRocks · 16/02/2024 19:51

Oh I want a little heart reaction for all these guinea pig pictures. I'll just put it here and it can apply to all of them!

😍

JDJT · 16/02/2024 19:10

My photos are so old they aren't even digital!
This was Misty (she was a really beautiful half Peruvian, half Abyssinian). I think the dad of the litter was my Solid Silver Agouti. I had her in a temporary cage in my room so I could keep a close eye. I heard her grunting at night which woke me, and I was lucky enough to witness the whole thing. I think i recall she had 2 boys and 2 girls. I kept the grey girl and called her Ruby💗

I've never had a guinea pig, or even known any, but enjoying this thread and learning about them. What sweet little characters in all your photos.

JDJT · 16/02/2024 18:34

@guineasgalore so cute, especially with the crests on their heads that they haven't yet grown into!😍

I'm going to have to dig out my old litter photos (we are talking 15-20 years ago🥲)

guineasgalore · 16/02/2024 18:26

These were our litter - think the babies were only a few days old at this point

Here you go :) Not the best pic, and only one piggie it it then. We'd do things differently if we ever made another - eg the cutouts on the side wouldn't be high enough for active bouncy pigs, so all ours have been more sedate, older rescues. The bottom layer used to be fleece, now it's all aubiose and hay. We often just fill the whole of the top run with hay, which they like 😁

And yes @InAPickle12345 we have 3 piggies - the pics I posted earlier are all abysinnians. Sadly the smaller ginger/white one passed away towards the end of last year and the large ginger/white one a month ago. Both were simply old and they are much missed :( But those were cute pics! Now we have two more piggies, but I don't have great photos of the new arrivals yet. I've added one of them here in their 'floor den' but you can't really see them that well. The black and white one at the back is blurry because she was zooming all over the place when we were trying to take pictures!

@Mrspatmoresspoon Thank you. This thread has made me decide to think about getting more when I move house. My son would be delighted!

Oh was that the one that escaped at Hatton Country World? I used to absolutely love it there. Brilliant little place.

BertieBotts · 16/02/2024 10:28

I love the photos of very pregnant pigs!! When I was on my last antenatal thread with DS3 and everyone was getting into the last month and totally fed up/over it I found some pregnant guinea pig photos on the internet and posted them to make everyone feel better. It really works Grin

Fleamaker · 16/02/2024 10:26

Look at that innocent little face 😂

Redmat · 16/02/2024 09:53

Lucky you! We had guinea pigs for years and lots of litters, some accidental! Our vet got the sexes wrong once and we ended up with a bit of incest, but the baby piggies were an absolute delight and no health problems! Apparently it happens all the time in the wild. Warning ,having baby piggies around can be addictive.

AnnetteKurtan · 16/02/2024 09:33

I LOVE GUINEA PIGS OMG I’m definitely joining the excitement here!!!

Mrspatmoresspoon · 16/02/2024 09:29

Ah so much cuteness!! Your Guinea pigs are gorgeous, thank you for sharing

@BirthdayRainbow Sorry for your loss. I love the way the pooch and the piggie are looking at each other. They really are the most amazing pets

CherryMaple · 16/02/2024 08:53

We have three girls. This is the alpha! I would heartily recommend guinea pigs as pets.

Also placemarking for the baby pics, but in the meantime I'll show you one of my 2 male pigs (brothers) that I adopted a few years ago who are both gone now but this thread is making me miss them!

@TriceratopsRocks I never thought about turning the fleeces actually, I have a main, thick, absorbent fleece on the bottom and then layer smaller fleeces in the eating and sleeping areas which I change out most days.

@InAPickle12345 Yes turning the fleeces does help. Our hutch is a big base (that originally started life as an Ikea wardrobe!) Designing and making the hutch was a project for DD and I. It sits on a table at eye level when we are sitting on the sofa, and has a plexiglass front so we can see in and they can see out. Then we have drainpipe runs up to an upper level that has always been a permanent hayloft. The bottom of the hutch had 3 rectangular padded fleeces which I made. One day I turned them, the next day I washed them. Only we worked out that the piggies made them dirtier, faster, when we changed them all at once (I guess they wanted to get them smelling of guinea pig again asap!). So then I worked out a sort of staggered arrangement where I would only ever replace 2 fleeces at a time so they still had guinea pig smell in there after a clean out. The 3rd fleece was rotated/washed one day out of sync with the other two. I think it helped, but I really can't be sure! Soooo much washing though, however you do it. But we really were able to move from daily fleece shenanigens to weekly aubiose/hay bedding. The aubiose does wonders at soaking up pee and smells.

Covering the mattress protectors with fleece was a bit of a challenge for my sewing machine, but it managed :)

And one of our piggies looks very much like the one in your wheelchair picture :)
