I think my cat stole someone's Sunday lunch

Just that really

My cat has just turned up on my patio with a small roasted chicken in his greedy mouth.

He has form for sneaking into neighbours houses through doors and we windows.

I can't really go knocking on doors to ask if anyone is moving missing their dinner

Mortified doesn't cover it

😂😂 I feel like we may see another post on mumsnet…..’Am I going mad…..I’ve literally lost my roast chicken!’

Lindyloomillion1 · 15/01/2024 19:15

I wish mine would bring home something interesting instead of repeatedly bringing in live mice from the garden.
He hasn't 'got' that he's supposed to catch them in the house, if at all

Sophierx89 · 15/01/2024 19:10

My cat came home with a sausage in the summer that she'd obviously pinched from a neighbours bbq 🙈 my partner thought she had a severed finger in her mouth at first the weirdo! 😅

thelengthspeoplegoto · 15/01/2024 19:07

My old cat brought home lots of gifts for me too. Mice, birds, big moths-all dead or alive.
Sausages, chicken legs or breasts and once dropped a scotch egg at my feet!

My first cat (approx 20yrs ago but still mortifying!) once bought home an entire semi frozen fish that someone had obviously put out on the side to defrost. She was so cross that it was too big to get through the cat flap and I didn’t know what to “do” with it so I panicked and called a friend to come and deal with it (I was young, in my first house and I’d never seen a large fish still with its head on). It was ridiculous and someone must’ve been so confused and cross to lose such an expensive dinner.

Our childhood cat in the late 60s was very smart. He figured out how to open the fridge door by standing upright on his back legs and hooking the door open with his front paw. He'd then help himself to whatever he fancied. My mum finally managed to outwit him by tying the handle of the fridge to the cupboard handle next to it with a headscarf.

Mine used to do that for cat treats - whatever was in them was like crack to him. I once caught him standing on his hind leg on the work surface searching through the open cupboard.

Pliudev · 15/01/2024 18:57

Mine brought home a pig's trotter. Thankfully detached from the pig.

TheFireflies · 15/01/2024 18:56

cat in the bathroom sink with a pair of knickers in her mouth is an amusing sight!

At least it’s clean. One of my cats steals my dirty knickers out of the laundry basket. On numerous occasions I’ve found him rolling around on them with his head in the crotch. Absolutely gross.

Thisworldsnofun · 15/01/2024 18:52

My cat once stole, over the space of a few days, a string of raw sausages, a piping hot baked potato and a block of cheese bigger than his head. I have no idea where from and I was too ashamed to ask!

I had a very nervous cat and one day she came bounding over towards me with something red in her mouth - blimey, she’s caught something, I thought. She dropped it in my lap - it was a flower!

That's adorable

My Dalmatian loved ice cream. Particularly the soft scoop variety. I lost count of the number of small children I had to buy another ice cream because she snaffled it off the top of their cone as she walked past. She was the perfect height and children did have a habit of waving it around near her.

CantFindMyMarbles · 15/01/2024 18:34

Cats don’t steal. They take what is theirs. They rule the world…we just run it for them.

littleorchard45 · 15/01/2024 18:33

My aunt tells a story of going to stay with future PIL with her dog. MIL was very Margo from The Good Life but without the sense of humour (for those that actually remember The Good Life). Dog proceeded to grab the joint of beef for the Sunday roast, and although very little damage done by the dog who was caught very quickly, future MIL - very tight lipped - threw the whole thing in the dustbin.

My aunt was appalled having come from a country family where everything was used/ no waste, and she and future DH were pretty poor at the time, so she decided to rescue the beef with the intention of cutting off any damaged bits and cooking the rest. Unfortunately, she’s about 5’ 1” and MIL caught her with her head in the dustbin trying to retrieve said beef! Not sure either of them ever got over it…

Personally i would rather believe my hamster escaped and was living the high life than having been eaten. Settle petal.

😂😂😂

That clever cat. What a clever hunter.

SpangleSparkle · 15/01/2024 18:09

Mine brought back a full size ornamental peacock feather once, no idea where it came from to this day 😂

BatteryPowerGnat · 15/01/2024 18:09

Our previous cat would eat dry bread that the NDN put out for the birds. No way would he eat that at home e.

Reidie · 15/01/2024 18:06

Brilliant . I have a long held belief that when dogs or cats misbehave it’s always a humans fault for enabling it . 🤷‍♀️x

We have indoor cats (I know,I’ll get heat for this). The smallest is a prolific sock thief. She’s also very good at dipping her paw into drawers and stealing things. I’ve found pants and bras all over the stairs. This only happens when we have people over…. She’s dragged a pair of jeans downstairs…. She’s a little menace and I adore her.

NicholaSE13 · 15/01/2024 17:44

My best friend had a rich neighbour knock on the door with a whole salmon. The neighbour said ‘we found a cat on the sideboard eating it and wondered if you could use it for your cats as we can’t eat it now. My best friend said ‘yes thank you very much we will take it’ Then they had it for lunch.

AInightingale · 15/01/2024 17:41

Cats are so weird in scavenging the kind of food outdoors which they'd never eat inside. Chucked some old cake and bits of croissant on the grass for the birds today and looked out to see my greedy bastard tom eating it.

Please post a pic this is hilarious!!

Also can just imagine the confusion "where the fuck is the chicken?!"

We literally had this with the remains of a crown of lamb. About 20 quid’s worth of meat.

in fairness, we have a greedy and sneaky greyhound, so we know EXACTLY where it went, once we’d got over the initial surprise.

sawnotseen · 15/01/2024 17:20

@Fiddlerdragon sorry your dad was indeed cruel that's awful

sawnotseen · 15/01/2024 17:19

One previous cat brought me a slice of toast - next door neighbour told me he was a frequent visitor and wasn't best pleased. It was hard keeping him in but I had to through summer as they had a baby and I was scared he'd get into a room and snuggle up to baby. Another previous cat who wandered all over the village, brought home daily offerings of mice dead and alive. Best one was a beautiful blue tit, still alive - took me over an hour to catch the bird and set it free....and embarrassing calls to school and work explaining why we'd be late.
Current pair of Maine coon 7mth olds are staying indoors until they're a year old in the hope that they don't wander very far. They do still bring me gifts - daily ornaments from the Christmas tree . They're gutted now it's gone but I get unopened packets of food (all niw stored in a clip lock container), my vape, letters off the sideboard. But it's the things they lose that's more frustrating - mine and my partners keys go missing often (usually found under the sofas) as well as washing off the airer - cat in the bathroom sink with a pair of knickers in her mouth is an amusing sight!
