I think my cat stole someone's Sunday lunch

Just that really

My cat has just turned up on my patio with a small roasted chicken in his greedy mouth.

He has form for sneaking into neighbours houses through doors and we windows.

I can't really go knocking on doors to ask if anyone is moving missing their dinner

Mortified doesn't cover it

When I was a kid, our cat, Smoke dragged a huge raw defrosting chicken that was actually bigger than her, into our kitchen.
She'd stolen it out of our next door neighbour's kitchen window. Luckily our neighbour was lovely about it and Mum went out and bought her a replacement straight away.
Smoke's long gone now, but her story lives on

We have a friend who had 2 cats who worked as a team. Over a period of a few weeks they brought in a pork chop, a child's purse with money in it and...... a tow rope! It was dragged in through the catflap, across the kitchen floor, through the hall and part way up the stairs.

Our cats are far more traditional - we just get mice; sometimes expired and sometimes alive!

You do realise that your cat has possibly done a poor (MN) woman out of her entire week's dinners for a family of 5?

And stopped her from boiling the bones for stock? 😳

I had the exact same thing in my head! Grin

One of my cats brought in a rabbit through the cat flap I don't know how she managed to get it through, she dropped it on the cat food dish, and the very much alive (wild) rabbit jumped up splattering cat food everywhere and ran under the fridge. My DD about 5 at the time is shouting at me, 'Mummy there's a rabbit under the fridge.' I'm totally baffled for a few seconds trying to make sense of the scene, then the rabbit makes a bid for freedom emerges from under the fridge and starts hopping madly around the kitchen. In the meantime cat has quietly wandered off somewhere leaving behind this trail of chaos, cat food up the walls and across the floor, child laughing and screaming and rabbit in full flight running in circles.

I did eventually catch the rabbit and let it go in the garden, cats don't you love them.

Your cat has obviously been reading the diary of a killer cat by Anne fine 😁

SayBaby · 14/01/2024 16:49

Yeah, our cat has come happily running into the garden with a chicken drumstick before, presumably pilfered from a neighbouring garden bbq.

At least the chicken was well dead at that point. A German Shepherd belonging to one of the local farms was seen walking back home from the village with someone's pet chicken in his mouth.

My Rottweiler stole my friend's pet lamb.

The lamb was fine though;he'd taken it back to the kennel he was staying in (we were on holiday) and was cuddling it.

How he managed to get it into the kennel I don't know.

One of mine caught a gerbil and it died under the sofa bed in the spare room, only found when there were flies in there 🤮, the same cat came home with a cooked sausage.

Another cat plunged from the top of a cupboard with a gammon joint, my mother was alerted by the sound of the plate smashing and found him tucking into it with the dog enjoying his share as well.

One of ours brought home a five pound note once, no idea where he found it.

Can we swap cats?

Speaking of cash;if I find out who lost their chicken I'd probably stick a fiver through their door with an apology note attached.

One of our brought, at different times, a live fantail pigeon (left it in the bathroom for me to find, not sure who was more surprised), a half dressed pheasant & a live bat. Our rescue came back one lunch time with half a cheese toastie, which he wasn't giving up for anyone.

catelynjane · 14/01/2024 16:42

Our beagle once pinched someone's bacon sandwich out of their hand Grin DH was mortified lol. I was in a shop and pretended not to know him!

My cat once turned up with a huge slice of ham in his mouth. He yowled so loudly to tell us about it that he damaged his voice box and was reduced to a croaky whisper for the rest of his days.

My cat was Yowling too;I'm not sure if he was bringing it home for us or his little sister who was very annoyed we wouldn't let her outside to enjoy the chickeny goodness

The dog stories have reminded me of the time my late dog was on a walk with my friend and his dog.

The furry pair spotted a disposable barbecue and promptly stole the food off it.

It was karma though as it was in a country park and barbecues had been banned that Summer following a series of fires in the park caused by them.

When I was younger our dog knicked a fag out my uncle’s open packet in the garden and ran around like a loon doing laps of the lawn with a fag ( unlit) hanging out her mouth 😂

TeaKitten · 14/01/2024 16:37

Also had a cat that used to bring home bits of road kill and try to pass them off as his own 😑

Prelapsarianhag · 14/01/2024 16:37

My dog once ate all a fisherman's bait.

TeaKitten · 14/01/2024 16:36

One of our cats did this when I was a teenager, caught her trying to get it through the cat flap. Mine and DHs first cat tonight used to like to steal the neighbours underwear, socks kept appearing and we saw her come through the window one day with a thong, soooooo embarrassing taking her underwear back to her.

Palomabalom · 14/01/2024 16:36

Ours are indoor cats but bring me hair bobbles, feathers and friendship bracelets out of my daughter’s jewellery box! The last friendship bracelet was bought in with much loud chirruping fanfare and it had “ je t’aime!” Stitched accross the bracelet material!! 🥰

OhIlovetosew · 14/01/2024 16:35

DP’s very large dog fled with the huge rib of beef DH had left to rest as he answered the door to the guests who’d come for roast rib of beef dinner. Apparently he had form for this but didn’t normally steal from his own household.

LakeTiticaca · 14/01/2024 16:32

My cousins dog went missing for a couple of hours . He turned up with a freshly roasted leg of lamb clamped in his jaws 😆😆

My cat ate next door's hamster!
Also rocked up with a boiling hot Cornish pasty in her mouth once. Mortified, I never told the neighbour, kinder to let her believe her hamster had escaped and run away.

You win

Many years ago one of our cats raided a koi carp pond in one of our neighbours garden. Each morning we’d go downstairs to find a huge dead fish lying on the door mat inside by the kitchen door. He did three of them over three nights until we barricaded the cat flap.
