Can I make ice cream from shrews?

The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us 4 shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker.

The shrews are already dead so I'm assuming IANBU.

Would this be in a special pan ? Because I’m not sure I’d ever be able to use it again for human food 😳

I don't know; my DP cooks meat and peas in the same pot.

Actually that only works when said, not written....

Frozen gre-mole-ata?

IdiotCreatures · 08/08/2022 20:44

So I googled poisonous shrews and it is a thing, though not to humans and animals i.e if we get bitten by one, we won't die.
The reason they are venomous (pretty sure that's the actual term, I know there's a difference but can't remember actually what it is) is so that they can keep their prey in a state of stasis over the winter months in order to have a food store.
I am so glad I have obtained this knowledge!!

Mine won't eat the frozen Lik-e-Liks but will happily eat them from the fridge.

Cats don't like cold stuff. They like warm prey... (apparently).

My cat enjoying a frozen lick e it. She does, my other cat doesn't.

I'm dieting. This thread has helped curb any desire to eat. Thank you.

ParrotsAteThemAll · 08/08/2022 20:33

Just freeze some Lick-e-licks like I do!

PolishingCandles · 08/08/2022 20:26

@pigsDOfly I now have visions of the op ramming skewers up their arses and barbecuing them while the cats laze on sunloungers with micepops while they're cooking.

If you chop them up finely OP, they could have miceicles for breakfast too

Squiff70 · 08/08/2022 20:24

I read your post to my DP. This is what he said...

"Kill the cats. It would be easier, faster, cheaper and no cream or ice cream maker required. Also, kinder to the shrew and mouse population".

I'm not arguing.

StaunchMomma · 08/08/2022 20:21

If only I hadn't binned 3 mouse corpses this afternoon!!

I got me some serious rodent semifreddo FOMO!!

ShrewIcecream · 08/08/2022 20:19

I approve

@Bwix Are you my mother from a parallel universe? Dear Lord, each to their own I know but also WTAF? 🦴 🐁 🍨

BibiBlocksberg · 08/08/2022 20:13

Yep, best thread in ages, imho, cat loving batshittery at its finest (said as a huge fan of the species):)

Slave of anti cold anything feline here. Including all food stuffs, heat wave comfort items such as gel cool pads, freezer pads wrapped in a towel, cold water etc.

The face when offered these items - total offence, yet has a coat like a blimmin yeti. Go figure……

Sneaking in a pic as this thread would definitely benefit from it……ahem….. :)

WTAF

iklboo · 08/08/2022 20:10

Make them some nice cooling Gazratzo as well. Change things up a bit. Or some vole-a-vents.

BinBandit · 08/08/2022 20:10

I don't think you are supposed to give them frozen stuff? Something to do with it affecting the way they regulate temperature and it can actually cause them to overheat more. Cool water and a shady spot being made available is all that's needed.

KindergartenKop · 08/08/2022 20:08

What about a creme shrewle?

goldengrove · 08/08/2022 20:07

Surely one for Classics/Most disgusting Food threads.... (It brings back memories of the long ago one about someone's husband eating a home made fat ball from the fridge.... There must be a real risk that this guy could also go for the Shrew Ice Cream/Mice Pops.....?)

And what if a visually challenged family member decided to heat it up from the freezer for their dinner?

I am feeling rather ill now

Yes, given that cats were originally desert dwellers I'd be very surprised if they'd actually be interested in cold food.

Brilliant idea OP but perhaps shrew kebab might be better. Although, if they don't actually eat shrew, maybe mouse kebab might work.

Shrewfly pie. Vole Au Vents. Mousesaka.
