Does parking on a closed road count as a live parking thread? 😁

So they have closed the road I live on to resurface it. It will be closed for the next two nights. We’ve had multiple letters from the council, there have been signs up for at least a month and yesterday they painted NO PARKING THURSDAY AND FRIDAY all over the road.

8 cars are still parked there with 15 minutes to go until resurfacing begins. One of the cars is right outside my house and when I saw them out the window, I tried to explain to the two women (looking like they were off for an evening in town) that they were probably not going to be able to get their car until morning but they told me to fuck off!

The road is lorry central, a guy is taking pictures of the remaining cars… it’s all go here.

Anyone know what they do? Do they just resurface round the cars? Tow them away? Do they get brutal? There’s a fair few annoyed looking men in hi-vis walking up and down! Should I get wine and a comfy viewing position?

😉

Soft toy viper is actually genius!

Have you not seen the new graffiti? It's on the local fb page Grin

I quite regularly wear the MN scarf.
But also, I work in one of the shops (not one of the boutique ones tho!) and often wonder if my customers are MN'ers. Some I reckon definitely are. Perhaps I can put a secret sign on the tills? 🤔

Please please do the secret sign thing.

Or maybe we could have a secret MN hand signal a bit like the masons?

Make an M then an N with our fingers to gauge if someone is in the "club"?!

Though I lived about an hour away, my 1st boyfriend was from St Evenage and would drive through to see me. I also used to go illegal raves in the nearby town L back in the 90s Grin
Loving this thread.

Ooh I used to go to those raves!! I wonder if we ever raved together?!
I used to live in St Evenage!

Yes! Now if only someone could invent some kind of standard way to measure. Like a long line. We could call it a ruler. Or an extra long one could be called a tape measure. Someone should come up with something like that for these guys.

When we had an extension built the carpenter was FURIOUS with the bricklayer (who’d gone by then) as he was slack with measurements apparently. Every day it would be :
laying a floor - FUCKING SEAN
fitting a window - FUCKING SEAN
fitting the kitchen - FUCKING SEAN

Ever since, if anything goes wrong I blame Fucking Sean.

Oh and the standard unit of measurement for my Dad and myself is "yay big" holding up your fingers to the rough equivalent.
It's worked so far.

Love the fucked up roundabout story!

Doubleraspberry · 22/04/2022 12:31

The time my car was towed by road workers, it was only to a road round the corner. But with no clue where, and the team swore at me when I asked.

It did turn out that, despite what they'd told the council, they hadn't actually warned anyone on the street at all about the forthcoming works, either by letter drop or even signs, so quite a lot of us called them up to complain that our cars had disappeared, and that the team on the road were being obstructive and abusive. I got a very wholehearted apology, directions to my car, and an assurance that the company would be 'spoken to' - which won't have had any impact at all really as they are one of the mammoths of council contracting, but I like to think someone somewhere had an uncomfortable day.

Another local here - might treat myself to a little nosey later today. I presume there will be plenty of other MNetters there to bump in to.

Never heard of the Hedgehog name before, that's really tickled me.

Sorry the MN "look" comment was tongue in cheek based on the previous famous threads about the "MN haircut", the "MN scarf" and the fact that loads of people seem to assume we are all "mumsy" middle aged types!!

No offence meant at all!

Grin

I am very much enjoying the thought of all the random MNers wandering up and down the hill checking it out and muttering to themselves.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 22/04/2022 12:27

Talking of measurements, back in the last century, carpets were measured in metric (width) and imperial (length) to ensure that the 2 weren't confused. I guess with the swirly patterns it was important. I asked out loud whether using W and L might help. Very frost silence ensued.

What will the secret sign be? Muttering "Wibbly Wobbly" under your breath as you go past?

Though that may result in a lot of new MNers in AIBU "This random woman called me Wibbly Wobbly as I walked past her, was IBU to deck her?"

SophieSoSo · 22/04/2022 12:16

If it wasn’t for the photos I would think this too good to be true; a pretty town full of MNetters, lovely Christmas windows, instant Karma for rude sweary people…it’s the stuff dreams are made of.

viques · 22/04/2022 12:16

I wonder what St Evenage is the patron saint of? Judging by some of the posts on here I reckon she is the patron saint of measuring things accurately and cutting once. She was probably martyred by being hit on the head too many times by a very low wall cupboard that her builder told her was a perfect height for a woman to reach.

FUCK OFF CAR HAS BEEN WINCHED ONTO LORRY

laughing my bloody head off at this!!! quality karma!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 22/04/2022 12:11

Yesterday he asked me to work out the area of some decking. He gave the measurements in m×ft. I'm good, but that was pushing it.

I used to make curtains . I thought in Ft and inches but measured and made using metric

Comefromaway · 22/04/2022 12:11

I love that road sign formerly known as Wibbly Wobbly Lane!!!!!

Ok I’m very interested to hear more.

Me and the more “fragile” teen have been discussing what job we’d like to do in road resurfacing:
digger who clears the road of debris
digger who receives debris (why a digger?)
scraper
driver of lorry who collects the scraper’s scrapings
buffer
people with spades
person with wheelie measuring thing
person with mad long extension cable
the fat controller (there really is one)
tow wynch driver.
tar dropper person
roller person

I’d quite like roller person.

I used to work on the roads, I can categorically tell you that the nicest of the men working with me was the driver of the roller. I used to be the one with the measuring thing that measured how dense the man with the roller had rolled. Probably why he was nice to me althought I only noted down the readings. I could also make them all stop work if I wanted to [the POWER!].

I live nowhere near OP but this morning I saw 12-14 people in hi-vis jackets clustered outside a corner shop, then later crossing a road, and wondered if anyone on this thread knew the official term for this… It’s not a herd or a flock!

I don't know the exact terminology for that, but I do know that the other emergency services call fire women and men 'daffodils', because after an incident they tend to mill about in bunches in their bright yellow helmets.

Ooh I know where you are, the mention of Wibbly Wobbly Lane brought back memories!

I just Googled to find out where this is (haven't reached the end of the thread yet).

I got as far a typing Wibb and the top result popped up Wibbly Wobbly Lane, I wonder why that might be 😆

The photos have elevated this out of the league of other parking threads. Especially seeing as one is fuck off woman's car being towed. All the time I've wasted on MN has been for this moment.

Can we all appreciate the last sentence of this comment 👏👏

Allergictoironing · 22/04/2022 11:31

I had the same with a bathroom designer, as my house had separate loo and bathroom that I wanted to amalgamate. He actually DID measure, but on reviewing his plans I realised that the shower cubicle would overlap the doorway by at least 9 inches.

He also did a design for a new kitchen, which completely failed to take into account that the understairs cupboard had a sloping ceiling ('cause, you know, under stairs)

littledrummergirl · 22/04/2022 11:27

My dh trained as a bricklayer but did a lot of general building before hurting his back.
Maths isn't his strong point. Straight lines, easy, measure 3 times, cut once, fits like a glove.
Working out areas, not so great. When we've bought flooring, decking etc I like to get it all at once so he measures I do maths, it fits.

Yesterday he asked me to work out the area of some decking. He gave the measurements in m×ft. Hmm I'm good, but that was pushing it.
