I am going to launch DP into the SUN for this.

Ten years. TEN YEARS of careful seasoning of my cast iron pan and he has "cleaned it". With wire wool.

After I pay Elon Musk to devise a trebuchet large enough to launch him directly into the Sun, does anyone have any advice as to whether this is even vaguely salvageable?

I have this uncontrollable urge to tell you all that the cast iron pan that my mother bought me years ago now languishes in the garage Shock

Its sole purpose is to wait for chestnut and open fire season, when it gets brought out and ceremoniously plonked on the sitting room fire and filled with chestnuts. Sometimes I sing a little...

I never got the cast iron pan love I'm afraid.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 03/10/2021 22:00

Did he know about the seasoning? I've never heard of it.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 03/10/2021 22:00

Dh just looked at your picture, pulled a very concerned face, said "ooo are they divorced yet"
He's had years of being educated nagged about the perils of even looking at my pan wrong.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 03/10/2021 22:00

Phew!
Mind you, boyfriend wants a proper wok and wok burner (super high heat? ) so I should probably learn this stuff so I don't end up under a patio in the future...

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 21:59

@Wroxie

He got upset about the rust.

"Why is the pan rusting Bess? It's going on the food"

IS IT? IS IT NOW? Angry

Yikes! My cast iron pans are my second family of babies.

DS and I share the job of cleaning and maintaining them. He takes his role very seriously. They are in terrific shape.

MadamMedea · 03/10/2021 21:56

@Mariell

The very least he can do is put himself under the patio without further ado.
🤣

OK. I'm feeling a little stupid. Does this seasoning apply to enamelled cast iron? Should I be rethinking my treatment of my beloved le creuset casserole?
No no no. Only bare cast iron! Basically, an unseasoned cast iron pan will be silvery grey, everything will stick to it even if you use oil, and it will rust really easily. The seasoning is required- it's not optional for bare cast iron.

Enamel is baked on to the cast iron in your casserole so that you DON'T have to season it. You can't get it as hot as you can non-enamelled, though, without scorching it and turning it brown (which I have done to both of my knock-off le creuset pieces, LOL)

Catsrus · 03/10/2021 21:55

I have a pan which I had to hide so no one could use it, I got so tired of having to re-season it. I moved house, the now adult DC moved into their own places and I'm ON MY OWN with my lovely, seasoned, pan - which now sits in pride of place.

shooting him into the sun is too good for him, a slower punishment needs to be found which gives him time to fully reflect on his sins.....

I feel your pain *@Yesitsbess*.

Thanking you!

@Doopedoo

Cast iron pans (riveted or not) are a thing. It may be a hugely niche and nerdy thing (and some people are hugely anal about them. Not me....oh no...)

They are a joy to cook with if you accept their needs, you can't sling them in a dishwasher. I get that they are not convenient. But if you love them then you love them.

You certainly dont fail any kind of homemaker test if you haven't heard of them, just don't ever use them to cook bolognese...

Did any one ever read the story of the old lady who killed her husband with a frozen turkey, then cooked it and fed it to the police so they couldn't find the murder weapon.

Threads like this always remind me of that story!

Worst of all it was one they made us read in primary school.

Anyway, if this were my husband I'd be getting a turkey out of the freezer.

Ronald Dhal tales of the unexpected. She came home and her husband was sitting in the armchair and comfortably told her that he was leaving her. So she went to the freezer and got out a leg of lamb and thumped him hard enough to kill him. Then she put it in the oven and popped out to the grocers for something she’d forgotten, had a little chat. When she got back she phoned the police and did the poor little woman left at home routine. When the lamb was cooked she fed it to them so it wouldn’t go to waste. Such a good story teller. If you have anything to hide, hide it plain sight.

@SuperCaliFragalistic

I don't really understand seasoning a pan. Can someone explain?
I’m so glad someone else asked this!!
Ogwen · 03/10/2021 21:47

Just placemarking for pics of Wroxie’s pans. Sorry about yours OP. I can’t believe your DH is so unrepentant.

IndecentCakes · 03/10/2021 21:47

Yess! When Hannibal talks about the seasoned pan to Clarice!

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 21:44

@Deadringer

Fry his liver on it and enjoy with fava beans and a nice chianti.
Lovely quote there especially if you're referencing the cast iron pan in book 3!

My cast iron pans are my favourite possessions. DH had to have words with MIL for me after she 'left that pan which was in the oven in the sink to soak, it took ages to cook down mind' 🤦‍♀️

She is never to touch said pan again, and dh bought me an additional griddle one as apology. Mine are by lodge, the poor amazon guy must have wondered what I'd ordered - small parcel, huge weight!

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 21:43

@Couchbettato

I have one (1) Mackerel.

But I do have two pans

What's this all about. I've never heard of such a thing. I feel like I'm not a real woman now
To be fair most of the cast iron nerds I know are men! I think because it's manly to cook a steak in one or whatever. OP may be one of the few other women I've come across, at least here in the UK.
Craftycorvid · 03/10/2021 21:39

No, no, no! This is relationship ending stuff. What madness possessed him?
