I am going to launch DP into the SUN for this.

Ten years. TEN YEARS of careful seasoning of my cast iron pan and he has "cleaned it". With wire wool.

After I pay Elon Musk to devise a trebuchet large enough to launch him directly into the Sun, does anyone have any advice as to whether this is even vaguely salvageable?

He cut his hair with my fabric scissors.

My. Fabric. Scissors.

Shall we just both launch him into the sun?
It was. My. Hair. he was cutting.

We probably shouldn't go into the pure linen teatowels used as floorcloths and to wipe out the bottom of the oven. My blood pressure can't take any more.

I'll hold him, you hit the launch button.

minou123 · 03/10/2021 22:25

I was just coming on to say the same thing.

I have proper, grown up seamstress scissors. They are my pride and joy.
I have created cushions and clothing with these beauties.

They are not, I repeat not, to be used for cutting sparkly Christmas wrapping paper.

The inhumanity.

What is a spoony ducker?

Aww I bet he’s a spoony fucker too?

FelicityBeedle · 03/10/2021 22:23

I neglect mine but it seems to thrive on it, cook meat with oil, rinse under hot tap and give brief scrub. Put on hob until smoking. Repeat. (If I fry bacon I’ll normally just leave the fat in it to flavour whatever is cooked next).
I’m also fairly certain I’m the only person in their 20s who saves cooking fat in a tub for later use. Nothing like dripping

Wolfiefan · 03/10/2021 22:22

Cuts cheese with steak knives.
He’s a beast. Shock

Did he know about the seasoning? I've never heard of it.
He has been told (nagged) about the pans.

He got his own pans.

He annoyed my pans.

No, @NannyOggsward, you do clean the pan.

Asap after cooking with it, you scrape off loose food particles, then use very hot water and a brush/chain mail scrubber/old cloth and some coarse kosher salt to rub it clean.

You do not use cold water or wash up liquid or scouring powder or brillo pads. You don't soak the pan.

After you've given it a good physical scrubbing, you wipe dry with a clean cloth, set it on the stovetop to dry completely over heat, then spray or drip some oil that has a high smoking point onto the pan and rub it in well with a clean cloth. Wipe off excess oil, allow to cool, and it's ready for tomorrow's dinner.
@NeverDropYourMoonCup kill him with fire. Only solution.

I didn't mention the soaking of the wooden utensils because I didn't want to go full LTB in the first post.

He soaks my wooden spoons, he's destroyed a wooden chopping board, he uses my steak knives to cut cheese.

There. I've said it.
Bet he also slices bread on the counter because the board is still wet and slimy. And used the super-duper Japanese knives to open Amazon boxes whilst thinking that the hairdressing scissors weren't as suitable for a lockdown emergency haircut as a pair of ikea red handled ones. Whilst muttering that there wouldn't be a problem if we bought everything from the fucking poundshop like he said I should.

If it turns out mine's committing bigamy with you, can you keep him, please?

Yesitsbess · 03/10/2021 22:16

@Thehogfatherstolemycurry

I've been reading the responses and his responses started with "mumsnet can fuck off" and as they've gone on hes getting more and more sheepish.

I have little pan on my lap.

Isn‘t cast iron black ? That pan doesn’t look like cast iron.
Yes... when it's seasoned Grin
Haffiana · 03/10/2021 22:13

My cast iron pan is SO seasoned it is actually safe from almost any bad treatment apart from the dreaded Wire Wool... It is from the 1930s, so pretty smooth surfaced - they made them properly in those days!

On the other hand, if I ever have to go away overnight or for longer, I hide all my decent cooking knives in the wardrobe. Otherwise they get put in the dishwasher by a DH who honestly thinks that saying 'sorry I forgot' will save him from being launched out of the window.

DappledThings · 03/10/2021 22:11

I have never heard of seasoning a pan. I suspect had I been left in charge of any washing up involving said pan I would have thought it was really filthy and needed a good go with the wire wool. I have learnt something today!

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/10/2021 22:11

Did any one ever read the story of the old lady who killed her husband with a frozen turkey, then cooked it and fed it to the police so they couldn't find the murder weapon

Lamb to the Slaughter I believe, by Roald Dahl,

ForestDad · 03/10/2021 22:10

I've found my thread! Love my cast iron frying pans, bought them 20 years ago. Expect they will go on at least my lifetime. Good for hob, oven, campfire. DW used to try to "give a good clean", now keeps clear generally and leaves them on the side so perhaps the nagging/shouting works. Hadn't realised that acidic sauces deplete the layer - good info.
I find that doing pancakes is the best thing to build up the seasoning.
Wonder if I could interest a DC in them to carry on the magic.

NannyOggsward · 03/10/2021 22:07

Are you not just cooking bee food on old food though??

NannyOggsward · 03/10/2021 22:07

I now feel a bit bad about the, what I considered crappy old pan, in the back of the cupboard I’ve been ignoring as it’s all greasy and black and I CBA to clean it. I suspect this may be a cast iron my parents have lovingly left me from its weight and oldness.

I had no idea this was a thing…

Wolfiefan · 03/10/2021 22:06

There is only one way to restore that pan. Season it with the blubber of the one who scoured it.
Then under the patio with the rest of him.

I suspect living with someone who seasons pans, is like living with a vegan or someone with allergies. You know about it! Grin

(I say this with love and as soneinevwho has a food allergy)

It was a leg of lamb, Tales of the Unexpected
Thank you so much! For 21 years I've been wondering what this story was but have just been assured it involved frozen food and a clever old woman and that's not something 5 year old me could have dreamt up
NeverDropYourMoonCup · 03/10/2021 22:02

@Deadringer

Fry his liver on it and enjoy with fava beans and a nice chianti.
No point now. It'll stick to it.

I had exactly the same issue of cast iron and seasoned for years being steel woolled (badly). To add further insult, he refuses to clean the anodized, copper and enamelled pans, so they're all trashed with a thick black coating whilst the ones that were actually supposed to have it looked leprous. The wooden utensils all seem to be regularly put in to soak, too because I don't own any plastic ones.

I'm not allowed nice things.
