I've just deliberately sent my husband on a wild goose chase

I may or may not have changed some details of said hobby and equipment.

He has a 'hobby' that he is obsessed with. Let's call it wild goose chasing. He watches YouTube videos about wild goose chasing, he reads magazines about wild goose chasing, he has all the gear ('infrared', 'thermal imaging' etc) and likes to go out wild goose chasing on a regular basis.

Recently he hasn't been wild goose chasing due to some disillusionment with his level of success in wild goose chasing and the lack of presence of gooses in the local area. This means every night, for many hours he has talked to me about wild goose chasing. Reads out bits from magazines to me. Talks endlessly. Listens to goose chasing videos in bed and comments on goose chasing techniques.

Tonight I went out on a run and happened to see a wild goose in an unusual location.

Nonchalantly told DH about it and would you know it, off his own back he's excitedly gone out to chase said wild goose.

I've now had two hours of mumsnetting and watching MAFS UK without someone talking about gooses through it. I expect DH is still delightedly crawling around on his hands and knees with his thermal imaging goggles looking for said wild goose.

Only I didn't see a wild goose.

AIBU?

AIBU to see it again tomorrow?

Can we be friends? I reckon Otter; not the VIZ definition

OP I think you are a genius! DH is a petrol head and builds rally cars for fun. I knew this when I married him. I love him and he loves me. I fill the house with yarn and fabric and he fills the garage with cars and funny shaped bits of metal. I have perfected the art of nodding and um humming in the right points when he tells me what he has done to the engine/suspension/wheels etc. If I could 'spot' a rally car in the wild and send him out to find it I would.......... Especially when he's watching you tube videos of rally cars doing what rally cars do and yelling about people missing apexes and the showing me people missing apexes because I once was overly enthusiastic about rallying by mistake. (As in I got my navigators licence and went with him and felt horribly car sick and perfected the art of ripping off my crash helmet while simultabeously handing over time cards to marshals so I didn't throw up. Then we had kids and I was able to quit because one of us needed to live to raise them) I do drive him demented by asking if he's fixed the flux capacitor yet.

**But she lied. She never saw a goose. She lied to him for her own amusement because she knew he’d want to go and look for the goose. Now she’s sitting at home having a laugh while he’s out looking for a goose that doesn’t exist. That’s bullying. Sorry I do not find this funny at all.

*It’s still not bullying though. Pranking, tricking - yes. Bullying - no.

QueenofLouisiana · 03/09/2021 21:14

@GooseyGooseyWander this is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. May you be highly commended on your excellent goose spotting skills.

Enjoy the TV, wine and reading a book without any goose-chatter!

CaribouCarafe · 03/09/2021 21:03

My guess is... spotting voles.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 03/09/2021 21:01

Whatever his hobby he's bloody brilliant at disappearing at kids' bedtimes!

Wherearemymarbles · 03/09/2021 20:51

He’s gone carp fishing….

TheChip · 03/09/2021 20:49

Ahhh is he a ghost hunter??

GooseyGooseyWander · 03/09/2021 20:46

He's gone out again. No prompting from me WHATSOEVER.

Ostensibly he's gone out to do one of his other 'hobbies' / work related activity/ Unavailability At Bedtime busy-ness but he took all his goose chasing gear with him so I'm not expecting him back this side of 11.

Good Girls season 4 has dropped on Netflix so once the youngest darling child currently kicking me in the head and refusing to stay in bed because 'gooses might get me' falls asleep through sheer exhaustion I'm going to be on it. In silence.

@PlanDeRaccordement

Why? That is so cruel and unnecessary. I couldn’t violate my DHs trust like that. It’s not funny, it’s bullying.
Jeez, take a day off 🙄

@iklboo

See, I daren't do the 'few drops of water the washing machine' with DH because I'd get:

Sits by machine & pokes a few things
Gets up & opens tool cupboard, putting unneeded bits on table
Sees something in there that should be in shed
Opens cupboard to get shed key
Sees cupboard needs tidying, starts shifting stuff into downstairs toilet to rearrange
Gets call off pupil
Goes to car to get diary
Spots shed key
Goes to put thing from shed in shed
Sees bikes tyres need pumping up
Gets bikes & pumps out
Spots valve needs changing
Gets in car & goes to bike shop
Sees neighbour. Chats to neighbour
Comes home having forgotten everything he has been doing and starts bapping on at me about fish / birds
Goes into kitchen to get some lunch
Sees mess
Stands in water near washing machine
Whole cycle starts again

I call him Arfur. Because he only gets 'alf a job done before he gets distracted by something else.

Mine would embroil me in the washing machine issue. He'd do lots of sighing, and fetching of tools - this would take around two hours. Eventually he would come and fetch me to show me the water on the floor, and likely the washing machine now in several pieces. He would then explain his thought processes in excruciating detail, with lots of pauses as he loses his thread as other things occur to him then ask my opinion but not really listen to my answers, and show me things on the washing machine pieces with a torch, and possibly a magnifying glass. He'd frown a lot, then read things out to me from the instruction manual. Eventually, after a week or two, we'd be ordering a new washing machine because he'll have broken our perfectly functioning one.

@OneTC

Fuck men are so boring with their hobbies aren’t they?

Grin

Obsessive behaviour disorders are prevalent in BOTH men and women. While more males are diagnosed with autism that females, that does not represent the reality, due to girls learning better to mask their social disfunctions from an early age. However, I do believe that men persist in wild goose chasing more than women!!!

iklboo this is me. So me. My husband calls me Half A Job Doll. I am notorious for it. Confused
