To feel "posh"

leopardprintpants · 22/07/2021 19:48

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

I guess and apologies for that, I just had a professional interest in social justice sustainability and green issues and can’t help myself Shock I know that about 10 years ago Monsoon were in trouble for using child labour and didn’t pay there workers or suppliers sufficiently so hardly an aspiring brand to me, yep I do buy with ethics in mind even though I’m on the poverty line nowGrinGrin

We had hired a car and driver from the airport to Sorrento as it worked out cheaper. Felt very fancy when someone had my name on a card in the airport. Yes before the grumps start I know it isn’t and it’s actually very mundane but taxis never did that where im from!

Also on the same holiday instead of the bus/coach tour down the Amalfi Coast. We found a company that did them by car with a driver. Not that more expensive for a group and he stopped at places the coaches didn’t. We almost felt important and again extravagant.

These experiences are very normal to a lot of people but to someone very working class who only went abroad once as a child( we never had lots of money. In fact we were poor at times in the 80). It feels extravagant and fancy to do things differently.

Interesting @Backwaterjunction, but not really in keeping with the spirit of the thread

Backwaterjunction · 24/07/2021 10:51

Of course no clothes are actually posh, the materials are all produced in the same way and using the cheapest labour and facilities no matter which brand you buy, often factories in China etc have contracts for multiple retailers just amending slight details but the basic product is the same, I saw one such programme where a lingerie factory produce essentially the same bra for a supermarket chain and a high end retailer (very high end) the difference was the plant manager admitted that the high end retailer sold there’s at 10 times the cost of the brand

I was also told by someone who worked at a uk brand for beauty products that again one of there products was branded and sold at a certain price and then the changed the packaging but the product stayed the same and they put it in a supermarket basic brand package, again it was a decent well known British brand.

My parents and sibling think i'm extravagant. My sibling laughed at me because I said I don't drink instant coffee and I prefer wine that's more than £9 a bottle

They think im a snob. I think they're inverted snobs
@irresistibleoverwhelm My dad refers to salad as 'rabbit food' and once refused a cheese sarnie as he could see evidence of two kinds of cheddarGrin

He refers to me and my pals as 'Young folk' (I'm in my 40's) and was we're 'Add our heid' for spending money on gigs and candles.

He's spent a fortune on theatre tickets and meals out for us but always has steak pie followed by trifle. I adore the man.
My mum (79) recently referred to her brother and his husband as 'lovely young men". They are both pensioners!

longwayoff · 24/07/2021 10:03

Oh spudlet, that's lovely. My sister and I, Londoners both and now years exiled still have to curb our excitement when either of us spots a Deer! Tractor! Bats! Rural Stuff! There was a hedgehog in my garden a couple of weeks ago. Visiting Londoner grandson 'Hedgehog!' 8 years old, never seen one before.

“threatmatrix

Exactly, people have no idea of the ‘real’ posh and it certainly isn’t Boden or Moonsoon.”

I think you have not understood the point of the thread which was things that make you feel posh.

If you normally bought your children clothes
from a charity shop and came across something special you would feel you had something you might think of as posh. If you buy your children clothes from Primarkmbut one day get your daughter a velvet dress from Monsoon, even though it is difficult to afford it, just because it is Christmas and you want it to be special- that might well make you feel you had bought something ‘posh’.

Also, there is no exact formula or brand for ‘posh’. Even though there are associations made to shops or brands as many of us are doing here. You can’t say something is not posh just because it is Monsoon or Boden rather than X. An item from either B or M could well be well made in top quality material, beautifully designed, and make the wearer appear elegant …. Posh.

Some people might not have much money but have an air of ‘poshness’ . The converse is true too.

😧 At people calling posters chavvy
I've just asked DH whether he wants breakfast on the balcony or the terrace while reading this and thought WTF, we just had a yard when I grew up

@Draineddraineddrained

See also craggy white and brown sugar lumps in a bowl instead of spooning sugar straight out of the form paper bag!
Also - that there are people who don't make tea by putting the bag in the mug and just pouring the water on top.

Although I don't feel 'unposh' doing that. Just can't be arsed with a teapot.

I feel dementedly posh when I make sourdough. It's so easy and cheap really but it just feels very MC and swank 😁

I once went to tea at a mummy friend's house and she have me my tea on a beautiful bowl shaped cup on a saucer, milk in a jug not just sloshed straight in the mug, and a few biscuits taken out of a glass jar and put on a little side plate instead of sticking the hobnob packet on the table All perfectly simple doable things but it just felt incredibly posh to me - just that extra bit of care taken to make "having a brew" a more beautiful thing ❤️ we're not mates anymore really - met through NCT and she was far too fancy to be friends with me!! 😆 - but I still remember that fancy cup of tea in her beautiful kitchen diner.

Fully robed chorister son suggesting salmon sandwiches for the the choir snack.

First class train travel. Sit in the special lounge at the station reading the paper and drinking free tea and orange juice, and then sit in your lovely individual seat while someone brings you more tea and biscuits.

And no one knows you booked your ticket six weeks ago so it only cost £12.

Shame is when you're having spag bol somewhere not at home and your children ask for pecorino

Superdry is the best for winter coats. Only in the sale though. Posh people only buy cheap. They save their money for ski chalets etc. Or cake. I like cake. Posh cake. Or peach melbas. Etc. 🤣🤣🤣

So much tosh on this thread 😂
@MySecretHistory I think you may have seriously missed the point of this post 😅 I think the Op asked about things that make them feel posh not whether they are posh or not. It’s very obviously light hearted and I doubt whether the OP thought that’s the Biden shirts we’re sending her into the pages of Tatler and Times rich list 🤦🏼‍♀️
I know right! The utter stick up arseness of
@MySecretHistory
post did make me chuckle though 😂

Spudlet · 24/07/2021 08:41

Ooooh I’ve thought of another one - living where I do. I grew up in an ex-manufacturing town which was suffering economically - we were ok, although we struggled a bit financially, at times. But there was and still is quite a bit of deprivation.

I now live in an ex-council house which is certainly not posh BUT it’s an ex-council house that was built for agricultural workers. So there are open fields at the front and back as we’re just a row of houses out on the road into a lovely village. We can walk straight out of our front gate onto one lovely footpath, or out of the back onto another. DS is growing up to think that seeing hares, deer, owls, foxes, tractors and combine harvesters out of his bedroom window is perfectly normal. I would have killed for that as a kid - I’ve never enjoyed living in a town. We can walk across the fields into our lovely village with a great shop, independent coffee shop, lovely old pub and DS’s tiny school.

It doesn’t make me feel ‘posh’ as such, but I definitely feel like I did something right to have landed here Smile Although I do feel a little bit posh when I put my neoprene wellies on to walk my working gundog - hoping they survive the onslaught of the new working gundog in training, who has taken a shine to them with his pointy little puppy teeth 🤨

@VictoriaLudorum

This is the saddest post I have ever read here.
Actually your response to this thread is the saddest post I ever seen on here. Are you always so utterly joyless Confused

Oh and look up the word ‘lighthearted’. You won’t feel so sad then.

Definitely a few Valerie Jones types on this thread… what would Saint Jilly say?

orangejuicer · 24/07/2021 07:53

@longwayoff

What are those things in Harry Potter that suck all the joy and life out of people? There's a few of them lurking around on this thread and, oddly, not one of them - with their knowledge of 'what's posh and what's not- seems to share any sense of putting others at ease and neither sneering at nor 'correcting' the apparent errors of others. How unpleasant. No manners at all. Tsk.
Dementors. And you're not wrong.
borntobequiet · 24/07/2021 07:45

posh sex article!

Just wondering what this might be.
