To feel "posh"

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

It's actually me, Kate Middleton aka Leopardprintpants

Sorry, I'm calling your bluff. His weren't towelling. (Unless you're double bluffing, and the shorts you bought weren't towelling)

I could tie myself in knots here with triple and quadruple bluffs Grin

@MySecretHistory

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)
I'll just drop this in...

Prince George was wearing Boden shorts for his 8th birthday 'official' photograph.

Quite right.

Goodness just the name, “The Night Train to Cornwall” sounds special. How exciting for you all. In the context of our times it could just as well be The Orient Express!

Of course no clothes are actually posh, the materials are all produced in the same way and using the cheapest labour and facilities no matter which brand you buy, often factories in China

Not true at all. I have clothes which are hand knitted in Ireland and Scotland from local sheep. Also have knitwear made in Italy, and dresses made in Japan all beautifully made.

I love to make organic sencha green tea in a pot and shopping in Selfridfes food hall.

Just used up our last bottle. No plans to travel back to the UK anytime soon so I feel your pain @diddl

"Ah! Now I understand" Grin

Can't seem to get salad cream where I am so when I'm back in UK it's a treat!

Bet you never thought you'd hear that said about salad cream!

Fully robed chorister son suggesting salmon sandwiches for the the choir snack.
This reminds me of a wine tasting course I went to with a friend once. I'd met her at work and I didn't realise how genuinely posh she was. The course was run by a very grand wine merchants in the hall of a private school in Chelsea. Again super posh but I was very young and naive and the significance of all this passed me by. Every week we turned up and paid £5 and got absolutely legless while the yummy mummies of Chelsea delicately sipped and spat and then ordered huge quantities of wine.

On the last night the theme was wines to go with food and we were encouraged to bring in food to try with the wine. I bought an M&S prawn sanger and some ham. When I got there the Chelsea ladies had bought huge sharing platters of smoked salmon, poached salmonfruits de mer, a whole sliced fillet of beef, pates, bread olives, etc etc. For me the penny finally dropped and I realised how very grand this whole experience had been.

To be fair to the rich Chelsea ladies they were all lovely, very friendly and welcoming and eager to share. I ate and drank like a Queen that night and saved my M&S sandwich for lunch the next day.

The day I am invited to a royal wedding I will feel "posh".
I fear I might wait awhile though Grin

"I think you missed my point. They both go with salad. I buy mayo all the time now, and I know it isn't posh. But that first time, I felt posh, which is what this thread is about. Not what IS posh."

I'm not saying that one is posh & one isn't.

For me salad cream is for salad & mayo is for chips!

Ah! Now I understand Grin

There are some wonderful posts on this thread and I pity the posters who don't get it.

Genderwitched · 24/07/2021 16:03

The people that are calling this thread sad are the sad ones and I feel sorry for them. They will never feel the joy of finally being able to afford 'nice' things. Of giving your children more than you had and of treating your Mum to something special.

In a month (hopefully) we will be getting the night train to Cornwall as a treat, and I will feel posh. And I can't wait.

@Knittingnanny

He also had a clear difference in his head between “ posh” “ fake posh” “ snooty” etc! Although he was never let them know he knew which camp they fell into!
Ah, snooty. I'd forgotten that word. It perfectly describes the killjoys who've poured cold water on this thread.
corkernewyorker · 24/07/2021 15:02

The story's about children made me think of dc1 the other day trying out a day's golfing activity. They told the pro who was looking after them for the morning that "Winston Churchill said golf was a good walk ruined". Thanks kiddo, I bet he loved you. It was the only golfing related anecdote I've ever related to them. Little bandit.

@Onlyherefortheconspiracies I have very similar memories of my late dad. In the last year of his life ( aged89) I used to travel up the 200 miles once a week and occasionally he asked if we could go on a Sainsbury’s trip. He would choose his bottle of Sherry ( Sainsbury’s own cheapest) and when I pointed out he could try a more expensive brand he looked aghast! He had plenty of money but only in late adulthood so he just couldn’t do “ posh” in any way! Posh to my dad was usually inherited wealth and privelesged lifestyle throughout whole lifetime.
He did often remind us and the grandchildren n, great grandchildren though he was never the complete opposite of posh as in his own words “ we weren’t deprived as I could take an apple to school every day with me in the 1930’s, the poorest children stood by me and asked if they could have the apple core when I’d finished eating the rest”
A different way of life !

mynameisbrian · 24/07/2021 12:57

I remember feeling posh many years ago when cigarettes were brought to the table on a silver tray!

pinkfanman · 24/07/2021 12:21

@ItPearl

Shame is when you're having spag bol somewhere not at home and your children ask for pecorino Grin Wine
More shame when your child advises the host that cheddar is not the cheese to serve with pasta and asks where the parmesan is. 😩Fortunately the host was a friend who found it hilarious.😀
Goawayquickly · 24/07/2021 11:53

@VictoriaLudorum

Boden is not "posh" however you define it. Boden sells lower quality goods with a marketing slant on making people feel like they are living a higher quality life.
You really don’t understand this thread do you?

Ha ha! Proud momma?

I remember my son who was hardly old enough to talk saying "no! Black olives not green".

It might have been his first sentence
