To feel "posh"

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

I felt very posh the first time I shopped for myself and bought Hellman's mayonnaise. We had salad cream at home.

And then at uni where I met DP (nearly 40 years and counting!) and the first time I invited him to a meal I'd cooked I bought a bottle of Mateus Rose. My parents weren't drinkers, so I knew nothing about wine but boy did I feel posh!

VeryQuaintIrene · 23/07/2021 15:30

My manky 15 year old car got totalled and I replaced it with a 7 year old gleaming curvacious not quite but almost sportscar with moonroof, leather, Bose speakers etc and feel very cool and posh indeed.

Almost as good as Donald Where’s Your Troosers 😂😂

My husband is rather posh, actually. And he giggles at my non-posh ways, and I giggle at his posh ways. And then I enjoy the fact that I no longer am so skint. Though strictly speaking we are merely upper-middle class 😉
I wore a salmon pink winter Jacket that cost £10 in the sale on FatFace for 5 years when the kids were little.
To now be able to buy shoes and jackets, just actually being able to buy clothes when we need them, makes me feel very good and posh inside.
Anyway, thanks for this lovely thread.
I miss going to bookshops and cafe’s! My daughter has ASD so it is not possible. Now I will make a point of taking her brothers when she is next on respite care. We shall feel well posh then!

It's the confusion between "posh" and "rich" which is amusing.

leopardprintpants · 23/07/2021 14:36

If that's not**

@pleasedonttextmyman

Also to those saying that posh people don't use the word posh: I went to boarding school, I had a pony, my parents house has its own postcode and people in my family have titles. I'M POSH POSH POSH POSH POSH.

literally just proved the point about how not posh you are Grin

HOW??

Surely that is Posh? If that's how then.. what is?! 😂😂

@leopardprintpants

All the talk of chinos reminded me of John Finnemore’s Red Trousers song!! It’s how posh men recognise each other from afar. 👍🏻

I'd just started working as cabin crew for an airtours, I was called off standby to position to Belfast by BA and stay at the Hilton to work on a flight the next day from Belfast. I had never flown on BA or stayed at a hotel in the UK (I'd stayed at Sol type hotels in Spain with my parents etc). On the flight they gave me a scone with a little clotted cream pot and jam. I felt like a million dollars walking into that hotel. I'll never forget that feeling.

I love this thread

@LunaTheCat

My bit of poshness was once flying business class - bloody luxury. It wasn’t the fancy wine or the food but just being able to lie down on a long haul flight. When I am on my death bed I shall think of the luxury of walking through the air bridge and turning left.
For me too it was walking down the airbridge and turning into the first door, the business class entrance, I was a bit disappointed that there was no-one else coming down the airbridge though!

Once bought a pair of those checked trousers from Boden for ds1, passed them down to ds 2.

2LostSoulsSwimmingInAFishBowl · 23/07/2021 12:54

My son had a Boden coat a few years back. It didn’t matter that it was second hand from a charity shop I still felt posh because it was Boden because my money doesn’t stretch that far to buy that stuff new or at full price. My daughter’s Ralph Lauren trainers (new but on a clearance site) also made me feel proper posh. I was brought up in handed down clothes, I think even some of my knickers were hand me downs. I will happily dress myself and my kids in secondhand but I’m choosy about what I buy because even though money is tight I have more choice than my mother had.

It’s a shame a few people have decided to miss the point of the thread and be dicks about it, but not surprising Hmm

SummerBreeze1980 · 23/07/2021 12:39

@MotherWol - it is so nice to have that feeling of actually have a choice of item not just having to find the cheapest thing from Argos!

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 23/07/2021 12:27

We also upgraded to premier economy on a flight once. My God I felt like Richard Branson.

LittleGwyneth · 23/07/2021 12:24

The other day I went to the deli down the road to get cheese to take to a a dinner party, then Majestic for wine, and Waitrose for some house bits. Got a black cab to the dinner and felt quite excited by how grown up and fancy my life was that day. It's a nice feeling. Not sure why people are being so snide about it.

Also to those saying that posh people don't use the word posh: I went to boarding school, I had a pony, my parents house has its own postcode and people in my family have titles. I'M POSH POSH POSH POSH POSH.

saraclara · 23/07/2021 12:20

I just googled those shorts. I'd love to get those fish ones for my granddaughter!

LittleGwyneth · 23/07/2021 12:18

@VictoriaLudorum

This is the saddest post I have ever read here.
If someone else feeling a bit bouji for buying Boden shorts makes you sad then I would suggest that you're the biggest loser on this board.

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)“

If you look at the thread, it is about a feeling of “poshness” (n.b. the inverted comas to show the word as a colloquial, generally understood term); and about something which, relative to what a person had as a child - and indeed probably completely beyond their reach when they were a child- seems luxurious, privileged and special by comparison - hence the little plastic character bottle of bubble bath seeming fit for a queen.

The thread is light hearted and intended for people to relish small pleasures or be amused.

The children’s bookshop trip is a lovely example which a lot of people reading might well imitate or adapt, as I know I shall. Whether it is Foyles or Daunt Books followed by tea at Fortnum and Masons; Waterstones and one of their cafes, or the local library followed by Greggs - it doesn’t change the basic idea.

turbonerd · 23/07/2021 12:13

Oh, I missed the sneery posters! Will have rtft in a bit.
England (possibly all of UK, but mostly England) cracks me up no end with some of the snobbery on display, so I will need to settle in with mocca and a fancy cake to reap the full benefits!
I worked in Kensington many moons ago (am not from UK and have since moved back home «where I came from»), and oh how I laughed at the «ladies» and sirs. I know they had the titles, it was just the way it was shoehorned into any conceivable situation Grin.
Oh golly! This will be fun!

RosieLemonade · 23/07/2021 12:04

The pure anger on this thread about things being called posh is hilarious. I've not seen spite like it.
Anytime I buy any item of clothing not from a supermarket I feel posh to be honest. Yesterday I got DD plimsolls from Next and branded trainers JUST for PE. Felt like a millionaire.

Anyone who says things like this is the type of "posh" that the rest of us call "snooty" - not posh.

Posh isn't necessarily a bad thing. But snooty is.
