To feel "posh"

Have recently bought my DC towelling shorts from Boden for our holiday.. I feel like a bit of a posho which is weird, I know 😂

So what I want to know is, what thing did you buy for your children that made you feel "posh" or even, what have you bought your DC that your parents would have never dreamed of buying for you?

Lighthearted.

@irresistibleoverwhelm - posted too soon! I've never taken mine to a live ballet but often took my DS to the live broadcasts at the cinema. Was really looking forward to taking my DD. We went to see the Nutcracker a couple of years ago...she spent the whole first half asking when she could have her ice cream (at the interval) and wasn't much better in the second half!!

ravenmum · 23/07/2021 19:20

I have a tub of fleur de sel, i.e. posh salt, that has been sitting in my kitchen since before Christmas as it is only used on posh salads, with the posh olive oil :)

Of course people who use the word "posh" are not posh, though! That's the whole point of the word. It describes some other, revered or hated status.

Redapplewreath · 23/07/2021 19:19

@FuckingHateRats

I regularly take my these kids into a bookshop, buy us all a new book and then decamp in the nearest coffee shop for hot drinks and cake, and to read our new books.

My mum thinks this is the epitome of extravagance 🤣🤣

This is just lovely! Flowers

@Diva66

I’m wearing a Boden linen shift dress. Am I posh?
No, but if you feel good it doesn't matter.

@irresistibleoverwhelm - I was very sad when my 2 got too big for JoJo!

texasss · 23/07/2021 19:08

Both have had ponies since they were toddlers.

Dnaltocs · 23/07/2021 19:03

Having a coffee and cake that I buy in a coffee shop. A real treat and if I’m honest a complete waste of £6:50. I don’t do this often and often feel guilty afterwords. Think this is from years of not having ‘waste money’ My real posh feel is having my children by the same father and still being married. Yes I’m Posh and fortunate x

Anyone who uses the word posh is not. You are safe. Enjoy your shorts (look at Vilebrequin or Orlebar Brown for posh)
Op says it made her feel good to indulge in something she wouldn't normally. Snooty comments like this are really uncalled for.
FVFrog · 23/07/2021 18:55

I have a beautiful one hundred stars full length summer dressing gown. I always feel like someone from a thirties Agatha Christie when I put it on in the morning. I then put my back door shoes on and walk down the garden to let my chickens out, the epitome of posh Grin

Paying school fees for children’s education.

Not buying per se but for having european habits that I heard are considered if not posh at least middle class. We have dinner at 8pm, everyone in the house owns and uses a bycicle. And my children are very used to going to restaurants that have table cloth Grin and eat a varied diet with lots of vegetables that I usually have to adapt when having their friends over as wouldn't go down too well. But their clothes come from the likes of Primark and H&M. So, definitely not posh

LokiDoki75 · 23/07/2021 18:49

I wore an evening gown to a Black Tie do. It’s beautiful and as I’m highly unlikely to ever go to another Black Tie thing, I might start wearing it to the shops 😁

PrayToTheRainGods · 23/07/2021 18:48

YANBU OP. I totally get it.
When my DC were young, a Boden towelling shorts or a swimming cape thing would have felt like I had made it.
Normally, I would be getting them second-hand off eBay or from the NCT sale.
So new would feel fabulous.
I remember a column by India Knight in which she discussed the stress of preparing for a family holiday with keeping all the DCs' clothes clean and ready for packing. Her solution was simply to put in a huge Mini Boden order with a holiday wardrobe for each DC ready to go. Not cool India. Made me feel like crap.

MrsKoala · 23/07/2021 18:48

I bought my kids second hand clothes from eBay and I felt really middle class. It was something only the 'posh' parents did when I was at school and all the WC like us bought new (usually with a huge logo conspicuously emblazoned on the front) and took the piss out of the second hand buyers. When my Mum asked where the new clothes had come from I told her and she looked quite horrified and my dad said 'you never wore second hand clothes!'. Grin It was a definite moment of separation from my childhood. See also taking my kids camping.

'Ridiculously expensive' is not the same as 'posh.
Madamesosostris · 23/07/2021 18:38

Private education. I just went on holiday to a place my son has been nearly every year with a mate - staying free in their family villa. Never realised how posh it was there. He’s a lucky boy.

Harls1969 · 23/07/2021 18:35

A car! Ok so it's a 10 year old, high mileage runaround, but so glad that we were able to do it

munchkinman · 23/07/2021 18:33

Oh I used to love a Boden towelling item! Sadly my daughter is now sixteen and won’t comply!

Imissmoominmama · 23/07/2021 18:29

I’ve just bought a few bits for myself from St Berts- they’re like Boden towelling kids clothes, but for adults. Takes me right back to my 70s childhood! Grin

My ‘posh’ moment was when I discovered those checked White Company pyjama bottoms for children, with a plain t-shirt. Bought those every year (in the sale) after that.

CiaoForNiao · 23/07/2021 18:28

Ex MIL told me once that my DC were swearing when they were playing out with exes SDC. Apparently she knew it was my dc not the others because they swore "poshly" Grin

Debbacat6 · 23/07/2021 18:25

First class flying

Bideshi · 23/07/2021 18:18

My Aga is four oven, battered and dates from 1968. This is game set and match on the poshness league table. Increasingly environmentally iffy to run though which is not posh.

ballroompink · 23/07/2021 18:14

When we were dating, it took DH ages to feel comfortable about buying lunch out in a café and he was really uptight about the cost of it as when he was young, his family would never buy food on a day out. My PILs still don't - it's always a flask and packed sandwiches etc. We often take our own food on days out too but sometimes it's just nice to buy something instead! I remember I once suggested that DH and I went to the John Lewis café for lunch early on in our relationship and he said he felt super posh doing that. It was just my nearest department store growing up so I didn't see it as a massive deal.

For me I felt very posh the first few times I did a week's shop in Waitrose. I can't afford to do it every week but I do every few weeks now and the excitement hasn't quite worn off Grin

Yes to Boden clothing for the DCs. Again we have more money now and it isn't such a big deal but at first it was very exciting.

Oh, and DH and I went on a minibreak to Burnham Market in Norfolk when we were first married. We were very young and didn't have a lot of money and that felt VERY posh.
