We pay a company to clean our bins once a month on bin day. I’m not usually home when they come, but I’m off work today And happened to be in the kitchen. I watched my next door neighbour wait until the cleaner left, take the house number sticker off my bin and put it on his, then swap our bin for his so he had the cleaned bin and I had a non-cleaned one.

He was back in his house before I had time to contain the dog and go outside but now DH is home, WIBU to go round and ask for my bin back??

The world is mad isn't it? Our ex-neighbors stole our bin and left the number on. This was no doubt to create an interaction/confrontation. I just ignored it as we were moving but I believe that they had form. I had honestly never know anything like living next door to them and I've lived in so many places!

I would use gloss paint and make it very thick. I would also put "property of" on all four sides but then I am petty like that! I doubt he will touch your bin again!

I love your DH as well!

TheFeistyFeminist · 29/06/2021 13:01

Excellent work by your DH!

I would be tempted to scratch/carve my house number in small characters on the underside of the bin. Small enough that they wouldn't see it even if they looked at the bottom of the bin (who does) but irrefutable evidence should you need it.

But then I'm devious, apparently. Grin

He’s a rescue and a very good boy who makes poor life choices.

I love that description of your dog - I may have to start using it for my own Grin
@OchonAgusOchonOh - I have just recently used a bin cleaning service in notioney Dublin! Grin

I live in uk but was back home at my Dad’s and I couldn’t stand the smell of his brown bin any longer. It was vile. So I booked a bin cleaning service having spotted some of the neighbours having theirs done. 16 Euro and worth every cent. The guy I spoke to brought the franchise over from the UK he said.

We don’t even live in a notioney part of Dublin. I figured if the neighbours were doing it I wouldn’t be talked about as the one with notions home from England! Grin
It doesn't matter what the neighbours do. You'll still be "yer wan bringing home her fancy notions from england".

Tvscreen · 29/06/2021 12:41

The cheek on this dishonest man! I really think you should report him to the council as this is dishonest conduct. If he’s steal his neighbour’s bins to benefit from the cleaning you pay for, what else is he stealing?

Thread of the year so far! Thank you. Unbelievable CF-ery and to say “I think you’ll find the bins aren’t yours either”!!! Xx

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 12:30

@CustardySergeant - some excellent examples of notions can be seen here

@Confusedandshaken

I'm standing up for the rest of Ireland here! We have a house in the very remote north west and some of our neighbours are very notion-y indeed. Sadly not us.
Would they be protestant though? Where do they keep the toaster?

Please tell the local paper or put it on a local fb group so people can circulate it!

OchonAgusOchonOh what does "a bit notiony" mean?
Having notions is an Irish expression that means you're getting above yourself. Kind of thinking you're posher than you are. It's usually used to describe someone being overly middle class.

It's really only used in jest though.

Not according to google. We're very un-notiony in the rest of Ireland.

DH’s retelling is getting more and more elaborate each time, but I don’t think he mentioned the stickers! DH says he turned up at the door, imposter-bin in hand and said ‘I think you’ve taken something that doesn’t belong to you’, at which point NDN launched into ‘well I think you’ll find it doesn’t belong to you either, bins are council property’, then DH said ‘so that means you can just steal our bin then does it?’ and it went on from there.

They ended up by the bins because DH said ‘I’ll be taking our bin back’ and that’s when NDN’s wife came out and said he wasn’t to go through the gate to get the bin. So DH went anyway and they both followed him.

NDN also warned DH not to scratch his car on his way past with the bin because if he did, he’d be paying for it Confused

We’ve barely spoken to NDN’s but we were warned when we moved in to keep our drive weed-free and our windows clean because NDN would be round to complain if he thought the street was looking ‘shabby’. He’s THAT guy.

When a neighbor or anyone says something like that to me I straight up tell them 'feel free to hire and pay someone or come do it yourself'

I dont have a window cleaner, never have and our wondows arent that dirty (I mean rain washes them regularly round here) and I have zero urge to get on my hands and knees and pull dandilions so if it bothers them that much either they can pay/do the unnessacery work or they can go kick rocks, I have more important shit to do than worry about a rouge weed but then I have a life.

Peregrina · 29/06/2021 11:55

I was staggered to see how many bin cleaning services there were. I had no idea people had their bins cleaned. I think we have washed our grey bin out once in about 20 years.

I don't think CF neighbour will try that one again, but you had better make sure your drive doesn't have the hint of a weed growing on it.

@BrightYellowDaffodil

Question for the room: what kind of paint do I need to use on this bin? Will any paint do the job?

The number: just any paint.

The depiction of two fingers stuck up: glow in the dark.

Brilliant!

I'd use normal paint but also a UV pen on it that only shows up under a blacklight somewhere that they wouldn't expect/wouldn't get cleaned off by your excellent bin cleaners.
Songoftheseas · 29/06/2021 11:44

What a cheeky fucker! I’d be tempted to find nothing for now and then film him when it happens again! Unbelievable!

OchonAgusOchonOh what does "a bit notiony" mean?

Collaborate · 29/06/2021 11:11

It's a massive thread and I've really only read OP's posts, but ?I think technically it is theft. You paid for a service and they stole that from you. It's an attempt to gain a pecuniary advantage by deception.

OP - if I were you I'd make a complaint to the police.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 29/06/2021 11:03

@Tulipomania

I haven't read the whole thread.

Am I the only one here who has never cleaned or had cleaned her wheelie bin?

Coming up 16 years now ...

I'm Irish, living in Ireland, and I very much doubt anyone I know has ever had their bin cleaned.

Out of curiosity, I did a google for bin cleaning services near me. There were a couple in Dublin (220km away) but they can be a bit notiony up there. The rest were in England, which is quite a bit further away Grin.

It just seems like a terribly english thing to do (and I mean that in an affectionate way). I worked in London as a student many, many years ago and, on our way to work at 6am, we couldn't believe the number of people out washing their cars every morning. It is just one of those english foibles that I love. I think we can add bin cleaning to that.
