Disclaimer - I love animals and im fascinated by them! But truly some have an aura of menace about them...
To start, I give you the Shoebill Stork. Not dangerous or anything but...disconcerting.

I just googled Amelia Earhart and crabs. Good Lord. I think I may have nightmares now.

SamusIsAGirl · 06/07/2021 13:00

Re Coconut Crabs - there is evidence that they ate Emilia Earhart after she disappeared. The island where it's thought her plane crashed found wreckage and bones that were a close match to a woman in her mid-30s. There was also evidence of a campfire and her makeup - specifically freckle ointment.

Coconut crabs will eat anything including each other and have an excellent sense of smell, particularly for blood.

Has no-one mentioned the praying mantis? I never wanted to visit let alone live anywhere the insects can be longer than my little finger and then one day on our deck in our LA I looked down and there was a praying mantis crawling up my leg... I calmed down eventually and was able to persuade it to move elsewhere. The same thing happened with a giant grasshopper a few years later.

We're going to move this thread to Classics now. Mainly so that we can't see it any more.

Poorlykitten · 01/07/2021 07:39

Did you know woodlice are very good parents? The females have a ‘pouch’ similar to kangaroos and they look after their young until they are mature enough to go out on their own…😁

Diddumz · 01/07/2021 03:54

@EditedbySKSS aw Mr Cuddles is a great name!

Diddumz · 01/07/2021 03:53

@TulipWoodpecker 😆**

EditedbySKSS · 30/06/2021 19:06

@Diddumz my son had a plec called Mr Cuddles. Boy did he grow. We eventually rehomed him where he had a tank of his own to get even more big and cuddly. Your chap is very handsome

TulipWoodpecker · 30/06/2021 19:04

Happy to see more offerings of freaky animals - and also happy to hear Chat doesn't disappear anymore! (In my day, etc...)

@Diddumz

This guy - my very own pet pleco, Scuffler.

He's a gentle giant and I love him, but he freaks me out. I have woken up, screaming, from dreaming he is under my bed.

When I bought him, about 15 years ago, he was tiny. Now he is a foot and a half long and I had to buy a massive tank for him!

Scuffler...he will get you one day...one day...

woodhill · 29/06/2021 16:46

@lettie9

Has anybody said goblin shark yet? Rare species of deep sea shark. You really need a video. Their jaw elongates rapidly to catch prey, and looks like it's coming out of the mouth.
Truly hideous
PartTimeLegend · 29/06/2021 16:41

@Twokitstwokats

Woodlice
They are cute - they're related to prawns and lobsters.
Twokitstwokats · 29/06/2021 16:40

Have you all read 'The Ugly Five' by Julia Donaldson?

Twokitstwokats · 29/06/2021 16:35
