Places you have visited with a strange vibe

Hi. I'm off to Saltburn (near Whitby) tomorrow and I feel sick. I visited last March. The weekend before the lockdown.

The place was so eerie. I was actually freaked out on the pier and had to run off it. I actually managed to sleep at night but I honestly didn't think I would.

The cottage was surrounded by cliffs and there was a Victorian lift and a small morgue by the beach. I'm not sure whether these have anything to do with it.

Has anyone else had this feeling from a place they have visited?

St Briavels castle

It gives me a sense of dread, like a Sunday night blues feeling before work the next day.

Dusk. Various places. Something unnerving about being out walking at dusk & catching little glimpses of ppls houses & lives.
This is one of my favourite things. The little glimpses into other lives through lit windows as darkness falls. Melancholy in a way, but I love it.

@Stirling2701we visited Belsen and I've never felt so angry

Stirling2701 · 21/06/2021 07:14

I suppose this goes without saying but the weirdest, most unpleasant place I have ever visited was Auschwitz.

DH has just reminded me of something.

He and a friend did the Three Peaks challenge in 24 hours, and I was the driver. The final one was Snowdon, and as they were doing well on time, they decided to to do the path which started at the lowest point. It was overnight (they probably started around 2 am), so I parked in this tiny little car park at the end of shale path up the mountain. I was really scared/frightened of 'something', but I don't know what! Ended up driving to a hotel a few miles away, and sleeping in their car park.

The whole place felt really spooky - although I realise it was probably just me being tired!

DH will have to find another driver next time.

We once stopped in a tiny village on a lochside to get directions. DS stopped the car and I walked along the road to get to what looked like a small shop. It was deadly quiet - I could only hear my footsteps and my own breathing. Absolutely freaked me out.

The A30 road from Salisbury over to near Winchester - a pretty drive, but felt very unsafe and anxious when I drove it recently.

The A/M74 southbound, especially the winding elevated sections😱

Naples.Very weird vibe. There was an awful feeling of doom and gloom over the place. I genuinely thought that there had been some major incident while I was there but other than road works I was told by multiple people there was nothing wrong. I have been in a fishing village where a boat was lost and the atmosphere was similar until it was known that all the people who had been aboard the boat were safe.
I felt like this in Naples too.

Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. I went on a 'ghost tour' there a few years ago. The tour itself wasn't scary at all. It was more historical, and in the Kirkyard itself they got someone to jump out at us for a cheap scare.

By the time we were leaving the Kirkyard I was chatting to someone else on the tour and had forgotten all about ghosts, including the alleged inhabitant of the Kirkyard, the MacKenzie poltergeist. Just as we reached the gate I stepped into an area of cold. It was like being hit by a freezing wind, but the weird thing was that it was cold inside, not outside. The evening was warm.

We went to the pub and things moved on. After a few drinks I went back to my hotel, where I was staying by myself. I went to sleep.

Then I woke up with a strong sensation of something being in the room.

It was such a powerful sensation that my heart was beating like mad. I even thought about going down to reception to tell them something was up. But of course I didn't.

I've never experienced anything like that before or since.

Later on, reading up on the MacKenzie Poltergeist, I've read stories of other people walking through cold spots, having a sensation of being watched and even finding deep scratches on their skin.

We did this tour. DH was terrified during the tour. I felt nothing. Next morning DH woke up with several deep and sore scratches all along his torso. I wasn't laughing at him then.

@RevolvingPivot

I've never nominated anything for anything lol. How do I do that?
I know this through almost a decade of lurking! Smile

You "report" the thread and in the "reason why" box, ask if it can please be moved to classics.

I am amazed that Beachy Head has not been mentioned..I was overcome with emotion both times I have been there..I could feel the pain and sadness of the people who lost their lives there.. and was hysterical when my husband went closer to the edge.. The whole area had such a feeling of sadness. I will never go there again..
That place affected me in the same way. There's a notorious suicide spot close to my home but I've never felt anything like this when I'm near it. Beautiful spot though Beachy Head is the signs are everywhere - crosses, memorials, flowers, phone numbers for the Samaritans - it seems to be wherever you look. There's also a very ominous (hardly misplaced) sense of fear and danger emanating from that jagged edge, but even so it seemed to draw people like flies to honey and my heart was constantly in my mouth through watching them get way too close.

My hair stands on end at the thought of taking my kid anywhere near the place. All-round awful vibe, aside from being really dangerous.

I may need some help, though. It might benefit from other MNers nominating it for classics too, if you'd be so kind.

IntermittentParps · 15/06/2021 10:57

I had a housemate once who came from Townsville. She never mentioned it being weird, but maybe if you'e from there you don't find it weird? She is very nice and not a freak at all Grin

IntermittentParps · 15/06/2021 09:26

I've nominated this for classics. I hope others agree.
Yes!
