I want to hear examples from your experiences. Like when someone drops the facade for a second and you see something a bit scary about them, or when someone reasonable comes out with something utterly ludicrous and you've no idea how to react. I want to hear them! Because earlier today, I found out that my neighbours daughter doesn't have identical twins called Ronnie and Jensen, which was my assumption. She has one boy called Jensen, but my neighbour hates the name and will only call him Ronnie. The boy is six. His middle name isn't even Ronnie. His grandma just prefers that name and calls him that. Confused

The post upthread about the man stroking the poster's ankles reminded me of a time I was on a train in the middle of the day, on the way to London. A smartly dressed man got on mid-way through the journey and sat down directly opposite me (which I thought was odd because there were lots of empty seats) and started up a conversation. At first he seemed normal enough, but then started to gently rub his foot up and down my shin. I thought he may have been doing it by accident until I looked up and saw the expression on his face. It was so creepy! His eyes were rolling in the back of his head and his mouth was gaping open in what can only be described as an expression of sheer orgasmic joy. He must have REALLY liked shins.

Latecomer on an EasyJet flight leaving first thing on a Sunday from Amsterdam to Edinburgh. Sat next to me. Told the steward he needed the toilet. Reply was to hold it.
He then pissed into a sick bag and handed it to said steward after the safety briefing.

I had the very weirdest school meeting ever when I went to a briefing session about an overseas History trip my DD was going on. The first thing that happened was that I was given some leaflets by two lovely, helpful sixth-formers, who then very inconsiderately turned out to be proper grown-up teachers. While I was still reeling from that, the Head of History walked onto the stage and started talking. And she looked and sounded exactly like a woman I've worked with quite a few times, who is not and has never been a History teacher. She had the same face, the same voice, slightly different hair, but basically The. Same. Person. Like they'd hired the same actor to play two different parts in my life and were hoping I wouldn't notice.

She must have noticed me gawking like a yokel because after a while she said kindly, "Do you know my twin sister by any chance?"

None of this was in any way okay. Teachers should be a minimum of my age or older, and they should never, ever turn out to be the surprise identical twins of people I know from a completely different context.

Haha I really laughed at this!

@smudgemylife

Not quite what you asked for, but here goes...

At a gorgeous park, warm summers day, sun slowly beginning to go down and sat eating ice creams facing the lake. Literally the perfect end to a lovely day.
Sat on a bench by the lake was a little old man who we'd seen wandering around the park earlier, throwing crumbs from his sandwiches to the birds.
He ended up surrounded by a ridiculous amount of pigeons, he even held out his and and one jumped up and began eating the crumbs directly from his hand.
It was so sweet and surreal, I was totally transfixed.
Then, in a flash, he grabbed the pigeon in his hand and snapped its neck!!! Stood up from the bench, casually dropped it into the bin next to him and wandered off.

Honestly the most mental thing to ever happen to me.

W t f 😳😳😳😳

I think the “adult” part of the adults only holiday village confused poor Marco. Maybe he was expecting some sort of sex camp, and was mortified when he realised his mistake. Grin

All in all, he sounds almost sweet, despite his lecherous ageist ways. Totally memorable character.

I’ve just looked up Warners and I think I would have loved it! The other guy must have thought all his Christmas’s had come at once!

once I set off with a friend to go to Portsmouth. ended up in Oxford.

I took the wrong exit without realising and not being British I had no clue it didn't dawn on me until we drove for roughly right amount of time but there was no sea or signs to Portsmouth anywhere.

Don't know if it's true or not but a few years ago someone from the West country was travelling to London to watch Chelsea, he put Stamford Bridge into the sat-nav and finished up in North Yorkshire in the village of that name. My daughter travelling from Cambridge to Stratford (upon Avon) didn't think being directed south on the M11/M25 was odd.

Perfectly ordinary Monday morning I arranged to meet my mum in our local town.
As I approached our meeting place I find my mum stood, deep in conversation with Superman ( complete with plastic hair piece - the works).
Later that day I pop to the bank.
Inside the bank is a random man with a budgie on his shoulder. Nobody bats an eyelid.

On Monday I was walking along a very wide, quiet pavement. I came to a junction and stepped to one side to press the crossing button when a very loud squeaky voice squealed "Gerrout of me way'. I jumped, stepped to the side and coming up very fast behind me was a very small, very old lady on a mobility scooter. It's lucky I moved fast because there is no way she could have stopped in time to avoid me. She was wearing a face mask so all I could see of her was a hat and and her eyes. I pressed the crossing button and as we waited I said to 'A please would have been nice'. Her eyes twitched from side to side a few times and then she gabbled 'Oh shurrup you' and took off on her scooter at breakneck speed. It was so unexpected I laughed out loud.

I saw her later whizzing round the covered market but I kept well out of her way. She might not have missed me the second time.

Having been run over by- no, pushed under a car by- a scooter at a road junction I wouldn't have been able to laugh at that. It haunts me.

Knew a guy through work for a few years. Seemed fairly normal. We ended up sat next to each other at a conference dinner and he started telling me he had a 'big secret' that he had to tell someone. Claimed he had stumbled across some secret information about the royal family/British establishment which meant that MI5 had kidnapped and drugged him, subjected him to torture and lie detector tests then dumped him overnight in the middle of a forest, miles from nowhere.

At the time I just assumed he was totally loopy, although now I sometimes wonder? (Epstein etc?)

I once saw a man using a wire coat hanger to wank at a bus stop. I also saw a person reading a book on the tube about the benefits of drinking your own urine.
Sounds like a man I read about who had been cautioned for attempting a sex act with a traffic cone! My eyes hurt trying to imagine it.

One evening one of my flat mates called out to me to come look at something on tv, it was a documentary about sex fetishes and some local sex clubs. Anyway she says, wait there was a guy who works in insurance like you. She then says that’s him pointing at the tv, all I could see was some guy in a gimp mask being led around like a dog at this sex club. A few minutes later there is a shot of him talking. It was the guy I sat next to at work. He was really graphic about his fetishes, even being strung up by rings he had pierced through his body. We were in different teams but the only thing separating us was a 1inch partition. The next morning I didn’t know where to look, my computer was constantly lit up with memes by everyone else at work I didn’t know where to put my face. I’d only just gotten over coming into work after the Christmas party to find someone’s bra hanging from the light fixture above my desk.
Similar. As a young goth, pretty much the only place to go at one point was a fetish club. So we all roll up one Saturday night, as one does. Chap with a cage on his face in minute PVC hotpants, being led around (by chains attached to his nips) by a much older man in an evening suit. This is a bit WTAF even for us.

Later on, I get a tap on the shoulder from this chap. Obviously I have no clue who he is, what with the cage on his face, and having been already asked by a cross-dresser in a bad French maid's outfit would I "deal with him" with a table-tennis bat I just assumed it was more WTAF-ery.

Turns out the bright spark in the cage is my manager at work. Since he gave no shits about bumping into me, I sort of got over myself very quickly....

a friend of mine was telling me about her summer holiday. They went to stay in a cottage in a remote French village that had a tiny pond nearby, suitable for swimming. On most days it was just them in the water, not another soul. barely anyone around really.

One day another family was there by the time they arrived. They heard them speak in English so started chatting and pretty soon they discovered they live in the same small town, kids went to same primary and secondary (different times/years) etc.
And that they both knew me. They never knew about each other.

Later I told them that they both attended my DD's baptism service but they never met.

I assume you mean they never knew each other/ met before they met at this pond!?

I had similar - friends from the South West of England went on a trip to Leeds. They put a pic on Facebook of them in a pub. Right next to them was one of my old friends who lives in Leeds! They didn't know each other, he just happened to be right next to them when the photo was taken!

A childless aunt who died, left her estate to be shared equally between nieces and nephews, some of whom lived in Canada.

Dh and a BiL were executors, and since the aunt’s affairs weren’t complicated, it wasn’t very protracted at all.

However before it was all tied up, a Canadian cousin of mine of around 50 - I’d never met him before - invited himself to stay.

Fair enough, except that on the first night he banged the table and demanded to know ‘...what’s going on with this money!’

Virtually implying that dh and BiL, who were doing their scrupulous best to move things along, were up to no good.

There was never so much as an email to say thanks for having him (10 nights!) nor for the PITA work dh and BIL had done to get his share of the loot to him as quickly as possible.
Needless to say, he moved swiftly to our ‘never again’ list.

I think there's some truth in that! When we were getting married I read about the option for a cloud blaster (cost £10,000!!!) to make sure there were no rain clouds in your area.
Was it April 1st?
NotSure94 · 27/05/2021 10:14

A friend from University who I'd got on with and was fairly close to, stayed in touch etc.. I knew she was Christian, but she never talked about it - but a few years later, met up, and in a random conversation about Elton John of all people, when he'd just had one of his sons - anyway she revealed she believed in Heaven and Hell - as in the whole devil pointy stick hell especially in relation to gay people and it was so unexpected, she said it with such venom too, clearly a whole load of hate just under the surface so I didn't keep in touch much after that and it's always made me a little careful about assumptions about people. She was so "nice" on the surface!

FuckingFabulous · 27/05/2021 10:14

@viques

I was in the coffee shop of a naice London store (Peter Jones in Sloane Square) , it was crowded but I saw a beautifully dressed woman sitting on her own at a table for four. I asked if one of the seats was free and she waved her hand to one of the chairs so I smiled , said Thankyou and sat down. I got on with eating my cake, drinking my coffee and checking my phone when all of a sudden, out of the blue , she leaned across the table and hissed at me “ The last woman who sat there was extremely interesting and a wonderful conversationalist, she knew a great deal about trees in Nigeria.” She then sat back in her chair, drank her coffee and ignored me completely. I have never finished a cake so fast. When I left she was still there, guarding her table like a malevolent spider.
This has made me laugh out loud! I'd be so taken aback!

a person I thought was my best friend telling me she thought it was my fault that I had a miscarriage because I like to be miserable and that negative energy caused the miscarriage. (well, none of that is true of course) and that she was happy that baby didn't make it because she was worried how I'd cope with 5 kids😳

we have 7 kids now. she's no longer a friend.

That's horrendous. I thought my bf was being a bitch at the minute but poor you.

I was once in a team meeting, with a colleague who was talking about going to be measured up for a suit. He said something along the lines of, 'It's a bit awkward standing around naked but worth it for the suit'.

We were all a bit agog - asked if he meant standing around in his pants? Apparently no, he genuinely thought he was meant to be naked, and the tailor was just too polite to say anything! Grin

WhatsErFace2020 · 27/05/2021 10:01

A couple spring to mind after reading this thread;

Once driving on a A road Coming up to an island when a van speeds up behind us, overtakes erratically quickly followed by a Range Rover full of rough looking men chasing it, both just pull out of the road and straight over the island while all over cars just slow down to watch them disappear into the distance with the Range Rover repeatedly striking the van. After a second all other cars just continue their journey like nothing happened - it was like a spy movie! 🤣

Similar to One from upthread- my sister attended the wedding of one of her best friends of 20 years and knew the New groom well too, on her way back to the dance floor from the toilet he grabbed her and started telling her How much he’d always loved her and could they meet up when he got back from honeymoon?! she Brushed him off and didn’t tell anyone this but opened up to me after she’d been to the friends house some time later for drinks and the husband Offered to drive them all home, he kept my sister til last and then kept trying to convince her to get in the front and they ‘could go somewhere’ when they eventually reached her house he followed her up the drive trying to kiss her...with her own husband in the house waiting!! Much to my protest she has never told her friend about any of it, but now avoids any alone time with the creepy ass DH!

Last one - I was off work one day sick years ago Just lying on the sofa when my exSIL just let her self into our house, walked into the front room with our post and had a fright when she found me there 😳 I was too astonished to really ask WTF and she made some feeble excuse about having some post delivered here and left shortly after. I told my now ExH at the time and he didn’t think it was weird at all so nothing was mentioned..

CallMeCleo · 27/05/2021 09:59

This one is a bit long but if I don't explain fully it won't make sense.

20 years ago I was 42 yrs old and using online dating.I went on a few dates with two men. One of them was a handsome, sexy and passionate, 38-yr-old Italian chef called Marco, with whom I'd snogged but not had sex. He invited me on a weekend away, his treat, and when I accepted he browsed the net and found Warners Adult Only Holiday Village in Hayling Island. When he phoned them to book three nights they talked him into a further four nights by offering a substantial discount. (He knew I was not working and likely to be available, which I was.)

He collected me in his car and drove us to Hampshire for our week-long, all inclusive, fully-paid for seven night break. When we arrived in our lovely chalet at about 2pm he put down his suitcase, pretty much threw me onto the bed and started kissing me passionately and trying to rip my clothes off. He was hard as a rock. I fended him off, saying no, it's too soon, I didn't want our first sex to be rushed into. I envisaged a whole day of activities (archery, rifle shooting, boating on the lake) during which we could indulge in lots of flirting, discreet kissing and maybe a bit of clandestine groping in the heated pool, culminating in necking in a dark corner during the evening cabaret. My idea was that spending a day building up the tension and arousal would make the sex that evening amazing.

As I read out loud from the brochure, trying to get him interested in the various fun activities were on offer that afternoon, he gazed out of the chalet windows and started remarking, then complaining, that all the other guests arriving or walking about the grounds were at least 60 and some even 70 or 80. He went on about this for a minutes, continuing to look out of the window, perhaps in the hope of spotting anyone our age.

Then he turned to me and stated that he "did not fit in" at this geriatric holiday camp and that he could not stay in such a place surrounded by all these "old wrinklies" in the pool and at meals for a week.

My jaw dropped when he re-packed his half-unpacked suitcase, picked up his car keys and announced that he was leaving.

I was astonished because full board at Warners for two people for a week is quite expensive, and we'd only been there for half an hour!

I explained that he would not get a refund as he'd paid up front. He said he didn't care about the money and was leaving, and I could either stay there alone for a week or he would drive me home. I made a snap decision to stay, and he pulled out a £20 note for me to get a taxi to the nearest station when I left. He then kissed me, walked out, and drove off.

For those who want to know what happened next...

I was able to "pay forward" my "WTF???" moment.

After sitting on the bed shell-shocked for about an hour, wondering whether I could spend a week alone in a holiday camp where everyone else was in couples, I had a brilliant idea.

I phoned the other guy I had dated (working but low-paid and so always skint) and asked him if he fancied an all-inclusive free holiday and he jumped at the chance. He phoned in sick, packed a case and drove down that same afternoon, and spent the rest of the week pretending to be "Marco". We had a great time and stayed together for some years.

@HaveringWavering

I told them they had better let his Fiancée know I knew and she had 24 hours to tell him before I did.

She told him the following morning and he was devistated...it was all very sad and I still feel he thinks she was the one the one that got away. He doesn't know I found out before he did.

I was watching Corrie with my grandma and her friend once, both very sweet, old fashioned, proper ladies. My grandma's friend was very meek and quietly spoken A scene involving a row between two female characters came on. My grandma's friend suddenly said, very loudly and distinctly "WHAT A BITCH" about one of the characters. I was gobsmacked.
