Something unexpected that made you go "wtf??"

I want to hear examples from your experiences. Like when someone drops the facade for a second and you see something a bit scary about them, or when someone reasonable comes out with something utterly ludicrous and you've no idea how to react. I want to hear them! Because earlier today, I found out that my neighbours daughter doesn't have identical twins called Ronnie and Jensen, which was my assumption. She has one boy called Jensen, but my neighbour hates the name and will only call him Ronnie. The boy is six. His middle name isn't even Ronnie. His grandma just prefers that name and calls him that. Confused

@RedactedTaeFeck

My best friend in primary school used to wank off her dog because he liked it... We drifted apart in high school so no idea what became of her.
OMG how revolting! Didn't you say anything to her about it?
Tanith · 27/05/2021 14:10

We were invited round to a friend’s house for an informal gathering thing. I knew her quite well and liked her, but our DHs had not really had much to do with each other.

While chatting to some friends, I noticed my DH and hers had got talking. They had a long and fairly intense conversation, quite animated on her DH’s part. Mine kept looking over at me, I thought with a strange expression, but I paid no attention. Nice they were getting along so well, I thought.

We left at the end and got into the car. That’s when DH shakily told me the other DH was a naturist and the entire conversation had been about nudist camps attended, magazines read etc..

Poor DH! Instead of a nice, friendly chat, he’d spent the most embarrassing evening of his life, squirming and evading all future invitations to join in the fun Grin

As a teen I was sitting with one of my gran´s relatives and after sitting in front of the fire not saying anything, he came out with "he´s got such beautiful eyes, hasn´t he?" while his eyes wondered to one side of the chimney. Of course there was nothing there. I pretended I hadn´t heard.

CustardySergeant · 27/05/2021 14:01

"once I left my pushchair on the pavement; strapped kids in car, walked on the road side of the car, got in and walked off."

You got in the car and walked off? Had you bought Fred Flintstones old car?

Something unexpected that made you go "wtf??"
LetItGoToRuin · 27/05/2021 13:57

When I was in my late teens, my mum was driving us back from a concert late at night, and I spotted a person lying down on the pavement. In a rare moment of chivalry, I got her to stop the car, and went to help. The guy woke up, said he felt ok. I asked where he lived, and he looked up, pointed to the house right next to the pavement, found his key, thanked me and headed inside. I’m pretty sure neither he nor I had any idea why he thought he’d take a nap on the pavement!

Can't believe you remember the wig man! We called him 'syrup of figs' cos it actually had that texture. It was so grim! I lived just off Walcot St then, and he was always around with that absolutely minging blob on his head.
I'm still here and haven't seen him for at least 10 years. Never seen a wig to rival that one, used to make my stomach turn Envy
There was also the guy who walked around with the pillowcase and goggles on his head. I thought it was part of the Natural Theatre Company, but it wasn't. Think the poor bugger had some issues.

Years ago, my neighbour died suddenly. Her identical twin came to the funeral wearing her dead sister's dress and coat....

See, I reckon that depends on your perspective on it: some might see it as creepy and disrespectful, whereas others might see it as a really touching tribute to their lost loved one.

A man injecting heroin into his leg at 12pm in a multi storey car park in Liverpool

How do you know it was definitely heroin, though? Could it not have been insulin or adrenalin or something?

We were driving down the M40 on our way to take family members to Gatwick for their honeymoon and a minibus overtook us in the next lane. At least four blokes on board gathered at the nearside, lowered the windows - and their trousers and pants - and mooned us, cheering loudly. It was almost like it was a belated stag night escapade, except they were complete strangers to us and our (ordinary and unremarkable) car wasn't 'wedding marked' in any way.

When we were at university, we were walking along one of the main roads, when a car went past and somebody in the car just randomly shouted "CHICKEEEEEEEEEEN!!!!!". That was weird enough, but then, a week or so later, we were in the supermarket and an announcement came over that they were selling off some reduced-price chickens at the deli counter. Immediately, a familiar voice could be heard across the shop - "Do you wanna buy a CHICKEEEEEEEEEEN?????!!!!!" - I think he was actually louder than the tannoy Grin

Also, walking down the hill to be met with a line of five pairs of pants strung across the road, between two lamp posts, with P, A, N, T, S written respectively, one letter on each pair!

Years ago I was on a train in a seat with a table and had a takeaway cup of tea. The woman opposite me suddenly said 'Can I have a sip of your tea?'. I was so taken aback that I just handed it over to her. She started drinking saying 'nom nom nom' at the same time looking me straight in the eye. Then handed it back. I didn't want to drink the rest of it so it just sat there. The older me now would either say no in the first place or just give her the whole cup.

@CrazyCatsAndKittens thats really not good for the cat to eat as its main food will make it ill

@StayAGhost

There was a mum on the school run that I used to chat with. Sometimes really friendly and chatty Other times a bit standoff-ish

Fair enough

One day I was chatting with her, walking down the path....then I saw her waiting with the other mums!

Yes, they were TWO separate people.

Grin

I had similar. Used to talk to a woman at school pick ups who I knew as a little girl's mum. Except it wasn't until I heard this child had 2 mums that it occurred to me that I was talking to 2 different people, both of whom were her mum, and don't look alike in the slightest.

I'd never seen them together and just knew them as 'little girl's mum', so they were just the same in my head.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/05/2021 13:26

literally just posted this elsewhere about gift giving

a family member knew I was doing Weight Watchers. she tried to convince me to try something else, despite me saying several times that I didn't want to try her thing, WW was working for me.

Eventually she dropped it so I thought I was off the hook. Then for my birthday she gave me a book saying: "This is the diet book I was talking about. just read it!"

and a year later on my next birthday she gave me another copy of the same book.
bonkers

@AintNobodyHereButUsChickens

Nope! But I have been with my partner for 27 years. I guess she scared me off marriage!

ThreeKneeRepeater · 27/05/2021 13:19

I was on holiday in Spain a few years ago. At the end of the day on the beach I liked to do a few lengths in the hotel pool.
I was doing that one night when I noticed I was being watched by a young Spanish lad, about 16 I guess.
I thought no more of it until, when I was going back to the hotel room to get dried and changed. I got into the lift, and at the last minute this same boy got in with me. I wasn’t bothered, strangely. The lift clanked up to my floor, and as the doors opened, he leant over and gently kissed me on the cheek. The doors closed and I never saw him again.
I was in my late 50s, and no looker!

FanFckingTastic · 27/05/2021 13:13

My old cat gave me many WTF moments - he was an absolute bugger and tended to not act like a cat at all. The best one has got to be the elderly neighbors complaining that he was nicking all of the strawberries in their vegetable garden. I thought that they were a bit deluded and politely denied that the cat was responsible for the strawberry-theft. Several days later, I witnessed from my bedroom window my cat, going from plant to plant, selecting the most succulent strawberries and gobbling them down. I've never known a cat to eat fruit before. After this we discovered that he would do anything for a piece of peach or mango. Very odd.

SydneyCarton · 27/05/2021 13:13

Don't know if it's true or not but a few years ago someone from the West country was travelling to London to watch Chelsea, he put Stamford Bridge into the sat-nav and finished up in North Yorkshire in the village of that name.

Years ago I was working in St James' Park in London and a man who I think was either Spanish or Italian was asking for directions to the football and what time did the match start, and we had to tell him that what he wanted was the St James' Park which is a football stadium in Newcastle....

peaceanddove · 27/05/2021 13:12

Cowbells are you the poster who has already said he must be creepy? You seem very vehement on the matter?

Aside from his (very matter of fact) declaration, he's never done a single thing that is creepy/awkward. Whether I can or can't see the situation from his wife's perspective is neither here nor there. It doesn't change anything does it?

Magicpaintbrush · 27/05/2021 13:07

About 20 years ago when I was in my early twenties and still lived at home with my parents and siblings my parents went on holiday and left the three of us on our own at home. After a week or so I was getting the hump with my sister and brother as they had already managed to notch up a list of achievements which included going to bed having left the front door wide open and going to bed having left the oven on. One morning I got up and was going about my business when one of our pet pugs came happily trotting into the room with a used condom swinging from her mouth. I had to chase her around the house to get it off of her, then carefully picking the thing up with a wodge of kitchen roll, I marched up to my sister and thrust it into her face demanding to know why she and her boyfriend thought it was okay to leave used condoms lying around because a) it was gross and b) the dog could have choked on it..........turns out it belonged to my quiet and unassuming younger brother Blush

duodunical · 27/05/2021 12:59

I was in a department store in Florida many years ago when a very smart woman farted loudly. In England she would have slunk away, pretending it was nothing to do with her. What she actually did was look at me, smile, say 'excuse me', and carry on looking at the clothes rail. I was so surprised, it's my main memory of the holiday.

jobsagudden · 27/05/2021 12:48

Love this thread! Great idea @FuckingFabulous

Cowbells · 27/05/2021 12:45

@peaceanddove

Occachocca I feel the same. Someone upthread as described my DH's friend as a complete creep, but that's totally untrue. He has always behaved impeccably toward me and never once made me feel uncomfortable. Well apart from when he told me he had always been in love with me. But even that felt more sad and poignant, rather than embarrassing or awkward.
He is creepy. Imagine being married to the creep. You really aren't capable of imagining this from his wife's perspective are you?
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/05/2021 12:35

grown man walking on the street in a tiger onesie in broad daylight. it wasn't Halloween or anything.
I saw him a few times when I used to park my car a good 40 mins before school pick up.

countydown1989 · 27/05/2021 12:33

Oh another one

After a night out, I lost my shoe ... well I could only find one the next day. About 2 months later it was laying in the corridor of the floor I stayed on in the apartment block. My two friends who had been with me (or me) had any recollection of anything shoe related on our way home. It really confused me and I still wonder what happened and where it had been. Do you think someone found it, kept it, and then left it out? mind games!!

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 27/05/2021 12:32

A rangerover driver running over a line of little ducklings.

The road was long and straight. As the car approached I presumed it would slow down. But that never happened.

It happened a few years ago and still makes me cry thinking about it. Mumma duck was completely distraught.
