I’ve ruined the floor and feel so stupid

This morning our long awaited amtico flooring fitters arrived to prepare the floor. They spent hours levelling the floor with a special cement-like compound. They told me repeatedly not to walk on it and I fully understood. They then left and I continued with my work (currently working from home). I made myself a cup of tea ten minutes later and drank it whist speaking to a colleague on the phone....I think you can guess what’s coming.

Absorbed in the content of the call I (stupidly and absent mindedly) wandered over the hall to go and sit in the lounge as I often do when talking at length... slipped on the wet screed and collapsed in a heap on the edge of the stairs - in the process managing to cover the stair carpet and my clothes in the cement whilst throwing hot tea all over the freshly screened floor... not only did this happen, in my panic I tried to ‘fix’ it with a cake smoother- so now it looks absolutely atrocious...I cried - a lot. I have a lot going on at work at the moment but I have clearly fucked up massively and this is inexcusably dumb.

So what happened next you may wonder? A blubbing call to my husband who broke the news to the carpet fitters and bless them they are coming back tomorrow to assess and fix the damage. I can only imagine what they have said about me Blush

Here’s the thing though...I can’t face them. I literally am so embarrassed at how stupid I’ve been. I just know they will think I’m a complete twat and I just can’t face them tomorrow or next week. Please make me feel better and tell me what you would do. How do I face two men that literally told me not to walk on their work Confused

I have to put masking tape across the door like crime scene tape in situations like these.

My brain can happily hold the thought “I must not walk on the floor” in the same space as “A cup of tea would be lovely right now” without a trace of dissonance.

Thedramalama · 13/05/2021 15:02

Honestly I can now see how I made a problem about ten times worse by trying to fix it this way, as if the cake smoother was ever going to work - I’m actually giggling now so thank you guys 😂

Oh OP! As the wife of a builder I promise this happens all the time

Redburnett · 13/05/2021 15:01

Similar situation, left outside conservatory and back doors open to help the stuff dry, put planks on bricks so we could get to kitchen etc. Then the cat came in...............

AnAwesomePossum · 13/05/2021 15:00

OP, you've had me cackling! The picture is just the icing on the top.

BikeRunSki · 13/05/2021 15:00

OP, I’m sure I would have done the same. I put my foot through the loft floor/landing ceiling getting the Christmas decorations down at the end of last year. The loft floor is completely boarded out except for about 40cm x 40cm where the ladder lands. And that’s the bit I decided to step on. We’ve lived here 15 years!!

Jesusmaryjosephandthecamel · 13/05/2021 15:00

This is the kind of thing I’d do. I did giggle at the thought of you smoothing it with a cake smoother. They’ll sort it. Enjoy your new floor.

Horehound · 13/05/2021 14:59

Oh god I am really laughing at this. OP it's actually really cute that you tried to fix it. You're husband will love this when he gets home haha!!

CassandraCross · 13/05/2021 14:59

The cake smoother to repair is genius!

Honestly, OP, it is so easily done try not to feel embarrassed.

AuntMasha · 13/05/2021 14:59

I can totally relate to this, OP. Your story is a sort of metaphor for my entire life. Grin

Horehound · 13/05/2021 14:58

Lol I actually think you did a good job smoothing it out! GrinGrin could be a cake maker for sure!

Thedramalama · 13/05/2021 14:58

Note how smooth my cake smoother made it 😂

I once pulled into my driveway but forgot to put the car in park. Sat reading my phone while the car very slowly crept forward and I drove through my garage door.

A few weeks later I reversed the car into our front fence.

I don't how I managed either of it.

Thedramalama · 13/05/2021 14:56

Thank you dandelion - I might just do that, let them in, quickly apologise and then hide myself away until they leave (they’re back on monday so no doubt they’ll be wondering if I manage to keep my shit together until then - and after reading these stories it looks like I could easily do it twice!)

OP you are so unreasonable. You haven't posted a photo!!

But yes this is actually a funny story and they will have seen the likes of it plenty times before. Poor you! But it is a great story!

Clutterbugsmum · 13/05/2021 14:55

It must be the week for silly things happen.

Earlier this week I was trying to book for my second vaccine and it kept saying I didn’t exist. This was from about 9am, it was around 9pm that evening I realised I wasn’t using my ‘proper’ name. I had completely forgotten what my actual name is as I never use it. Within 5 minutes I’d booked it 😁

DandelionRose · 13/05/2021 14:54

Honestly it's not worth another thought over, they'll have seen it all before (and worse). A lot of tradesmen will also have made their own mistakes in the past, nobody's perfect. I'd smile about it but don't be cringing, it's your floor not anyone else's so you don't need to be apologetic. I'm sure they will be professional about it but if not, don't let them embarrass you, just leave them to get on with it.

Miljea · 13/05/2021 14:52

We got our engineered wood floors expensively sanded back and re-oiled. Then cut a 10 foot long groove in it pulling a sofa back into position....

Flooring bloke said we were by no means the first to do it, as he repaired it....

Thedramalama · 13/05/2021 14:49

Adifferentstory and mildura 😂 brilliant

Oh brokengate - I hope it has lifted your spirits, they do say things happen for a reason! Hearing all of these funny stories has really helped me calm down

I once called a locksmith when I locked myself out... then called him again before he'd reached the end of the road because I did it again. I was mortified but he laughed it off and made a joke of making sure I was in the house with my key in my hand before leaving.Blush

brokengate · 13/05/2021 14:47

For various reasons I feel really low today. This thread has just made me smile. I'm sorry about your floor OP, this is exactly the type of thing I would do. Just you own it tomorrow. Biscuits and cake, a big smile and a laugh. We all need that right now!

Adifferentstory2 · 13/05/2021 14:46

Husband and I also speak a whole day putting sealer and varnish on our wooden floor. Went out that night very pleased with ourselves, got drunk and walked straight on the wet varnish when we got home. There were footprints in it until the day we left!

Adifferentstory2 · 13/05/2021 14:45

Grin poor you, but this made me laugh. My builder built a whole complex ramp thing so we could get in and out of house with buggy. It was to go over the top of fresh concrete on the path to the house (which was due to be tiled). Decided to go out, got buggy down ramp all safe. Then my 4 year old followed me out and excitedly jumped off the ramp and into the fresh concrete, leaving a nice pre-schooler shaped dent. Marvellous. They fixed it, I apologised a lot and bought extra biscuits! X
