to think it's really cheeky to invite someone to a BBQ then expect them to bring...

...The BBQ!?

We were invited last week to a friends today for a BBQ. They called this morning asking to borrow our BBQ, we assumed there's had broken or the one they ordered hadn't arrived etc - but no. They don't have one. So we suggested they come to ours and bring some of the stuff they'd bought as our BBQ is very heavy and large (won't fit in the car without removing the child seats and lying all seats flat) but it turns out, that not only did they want us to bring our BBQ, they wanted us to leave it at theirs as they are having other friends this evening.

Was IBU to say no? That I didn't want to take our large BBQ and gas bottle to their house and leave it with them?

I thought you were going to say they'd asked you to bring a cheeky amount of food or drink, not the actual BBQ! 😂

Tell them that unfortunately it is not very portable and far too big to fit in your car. The supermarkets are however selling plenty of disposable BBQs so you're sure they'll be able to get themselves a few from there when they do the food shop.

I would say you have been invited because of your BBQ rather than your company but it doesn't mean you have to go along with the cheeky request. We were invited to a party once and it quickly became apparent our bouncy castle was the reason why we were high on that particular guest list. We did take it along with us but it is far more portable than a dirty BBQ. We also took it home with us when we left.

Priceless.

Bring your bbq, show us how to use it, fuck off home so we can swank to our preferred guests.

Surprised you haven’t been asked to bring the chump chops.

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 11/04/2021 16:51

So they expected you to bring a gas bbq, leave your gas etc? Beyond cheeky.

redcandlelight · 11/04/2021 16:51

yanbu
this is funny @dotdashdashdash I hope you said fucking no! with a big exclamation mark.

SnuggyBuggy · 11/04/2021 16:50

Not heard of that one before. A salad or some burger buns would be a more typical request. Can't they just get some disposable ones?

DaphneDuBois · 11/04/2021 16:50

What exactly were they providing as ‘hosts’ of this ‘bbq’? The fucking fresh air?!

UseOfWeapons · 11/04/2021 16:49

These are not friends, they are CFs!
You are definitely not being unreasonable!

nancywhitehead · 11/04/2021 16:49

That's crazy, why on earth would someone arrange a BBQ if they don't even own one? Hmm

kowari · 11/04/2021 16:49

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

Not a chance, as host you ensure you have everything needed ti cater for your guests. Very cheeky.
I disagree that you need to provide everything, arranging for someone to bring the salads, another a pudding, can work well in some circles. Asking for the bbq on the day is being unreasonable though! Could be fine if arranged in advance and both parties are happy, one having the bbq and the other having a better garden for example.
gamerchick · 11/04/2021 16:49

Point them towards b&q for one and decline the invite. Cheeky gits.

KoalaOok · 11/04/2021 16:48

Ha! I thought this was going to be about being asked to bring meat or food. Not the actual BBQ! That's like going to a dinner party and being asked to bring the oven!

dotdashdashdash · 11/04/2021 16:48

@nearlynermal

When invited to a barbecue it's reasonable to expect a bottle of wine, a packet of salad leaves or MAYBE a few sausages. Not the actual BBQ. CF alert.
I'd made dessert and was providing some drinks as well. We'd pffered to take more.

That's brilliant.

dotdashdashdash · 11/04/2021 16:47

Thing is, if they had asked when the BBQ was arranged we would probably have said yes and made an arrangement for them to collect or us to deliver. I was pissed off at the timing of the request and that they expected us to leave it.

It was made worse by us suggesting we bring our charcoal bbq (gas one is only 18 months old and we still have the old one) as we don't mind leaving it but that they needed to source some charcoal - they said no as it was too much hassle.

Before this I would have said we were good friends but their attitude when we said it wasn't really possible without real upheaval (we have 2 kids in rear-facing car seats) they became funny with us.

We ended up not going.

SylviaPlath1984 · 11/04/2021 16:45

There's no situation or circumstance I can imagine where by I'd have the balls to be so shameless 😂 what goes through these peoples heads when they plan these things? You're not being unreasonable at all, I think they are cheeky and pretty idiotic lol

SirusTheVirus · 11/04/2021 16:44

This is cheeky fuckery at its best Grin

MyDcAreMarvel · 11/04/2021 16:44

@problembottom you would reconsider a friendship where a friend asked to borrow an item?

CoolCatTaco · 11/04/2021 16:43

Holy moly, unbelievably cheeky! What did they say when you said no??

ColourfulElmerElephant · 11/04/2021 16:43

I hope you said no, that your bbq wasn’t transportable but plenty of garden centres are open selling them so you will still be seeing them tonight.

PyjamaFan · 11/04/2021 16:41

The cheeky sods!

I would say no and cancel.

SixDegrees · 11/04/2021 16:41

That’s really really cheeky of them.

There were stacks of disposable BBQs in my local Tesco yesterday, I’m sure your friends could have found something similar if they’d tried!

problembottom · 11/04/2021 16:40

Just no. I’d be reconsidering the friendship after that...

8dpwoah · 11/04/2021 16:40

Crikey I thought you were going to say they asked you to bring the burgers or something!

At a push, if they'd realised they'd ran out of gas and knew you had some, I'd have probably gone with that assuming they are the sort to replace it. But not the whole bloody BBQ! Lesson learned there!

Butchyrestingface · 11/04/2021 16:40

How long have you known this friend, OP?

Do they have form for being a cheeky cunt?
