to think it's really cheeky to invite someone to a BBQ then expect them to bring...

...The BBQ!?

We were invited last week to a friends today for a BBQ. They called this morning asking to borrow our BBQ, we assumed there's had broken or the one they ordered hadn't arrived etc - but no. They don't have one. So we suggested they come to ours and bring some of the stuff they'd bought as our BBQ is very heavy and large (won't fit in the car without removing the child seats and lying all seats flat) but it turns out, that not only did they want us to bring our BBQ, they wanted us to leave it at theirs as they are having other friends this evening.

Was IBU to say no? That I didn't want to take our large BBQ and gas bottle to their house and leave it with them?

Perhaps that person does not want her to host the bbq as she buys cheap farm foods meat and tries to pass it off as a M & S.

Most unintentionally hilarious ‘burn’ I’ve read in a long time.

Thanks Glenda!

sue20 · 13/04/2021 08:52

How about they ask BEFORE arranging the barbecue? You say they asked WHEN ! Now they’ve gone “funny” lol. My advice you go “funny” and stay “funny”. Loads of people out there to become great friends with get rid of the defective ones quickly!!

@GlendaPickle

Yes I don’t see what the problem in lending a bbq. It will cleaned, Op is a drama queen.

I bet she has lent a Henry hoover or something similar before.

What friend posts on a forum.

I think the issue isn't asking to borrow a BBQ, I would have done the same had I invited people over then mine broke and I was really stuck and had exhausted other all other options (and if the person I was asking to borrow a BBQ off was coming to BOTH my BBQs and I promised to pay for the gas used, helped transport said BBQ and clean it after). This 'friend' arranged two BBQs (one the OP isn't even invited to!) assuming they could borrow OP's BBQ without asking first. It's the sense of entitlement and the assumption that is so cheeky here, and it shows a lack of respect for the OP or other people's time or belongings. Also it's a bit childlike, friend wants to be the fun party-throwing person while expecting the OP to do all the leg work. I had a friend like this so I totally get it, it's not just the BBQ, takers take all the time and OP needed to put foot down or else where would it end?
longwayoff · 13/04/2021 08:37

Be careful she doesn't invite you to her wedding 'Please bring a bridegroom. Penelope will bring the ring and Joanne is supplying the cake. I have a dress on loan from Bridezillas R Us. I will have the groom cleaned and returned to you after the 2 week honeymoon in the Maldives kindly donated by Aunty Sue. Additionally, I enclose your ticket to this event which will cost £50pp, non refundable and payable in advance.' Ta.

Transporting a gas bbq is nothing like a henry Hoover! Gas bbq live outside and are rusted underneath. Seriously, you'd want to deal with that in your car?! I would lend most stuff including my old charcoal bbq but not my gas bbq. Why wouldnt you just buy one instead of asking people to lend theirs? That's like asking for their childs garden swing!!!

Beautiful3 · 13/04/2021 08:06

There no way I'd be able to fit my gas bbq in my car with the bottle. Not only is it big and heavy but it's been out side for a year so rust would go every where! What a strange request. Your charcoal one would have been perfect, as its smaller and no gas bottle! I'm surprised they refused your sensible offer. Everyone knows how easy and cheap it is to buy charcoal from the petrol station! Sounds like you were only invited to bring the bbq for their friends in the evening! They could have still done a nice buffet and cooked pizza and chicken drumsticks in their oven?! Sorry but they dont sound like nice people op.

Faez · 13/04/2021 08:04

Let’s hear the full facts then?

Lostinthemail · 13/04/2021 07:54

@GlendaPickle

OP knows that the other person in question reads this forum and is recruiting support and is not being truthful with the facts.

Attention seeking.

Perhaps that person does not want her to host the bbq as she buys cheap farm foods meat and tries to pass it off as a M & S.

Glenda, give the OP back her stuff and don’t bother her ever again. If you don’t like the food she serves don’t eat there, that’s ok. Borrowing stuff from people and not returning it is, however, not ok.
DartmoorDoughnut · 13/04/2021 07:54

Definitely the OP’s friend then @GlendaPickle ... you sound lovely don’t forget to give all OP’s things back

Havent rtft.
Personally I would have leant it to them.
I seem to be in a tiny minority.

Lostinthemail · 13/04/2021 07:38

@purplebunny2012

They are CF to the extreme. YANBU, unless they were going to pay you for the gas and hire of the BBQ
Really? Because even if people are willing to pay for it I wouldn’t be willing to rent my bbq out to other people and risk them damaging it. If they do and it’s broken, they’ll probably say it’s my problem because they already paid for it. If I start a rent-a-bbq it’s because I want to, not because of other people’s wants, so even if they are wanting to pay, it’s not unreasonable to say no...
Ddot · 13/04/2021 05:17

Hi having a party, cant be bothered getting what I need so can you sort out cooking facilities oh and fuel too. I'm far too precious. Yes it's my party, what do you mean FU* O* oh what selfish friends I have. Me me me me!

Justilou1 · 13/04/2021 02:47

Awesome - he sounds like the original Dodgy Bros @expat101
@expat101 - I bet he remained unemployed too
He did his dash about the village as he started on the Client's work, other younger builders have since come up through the ranks and doing a better job too.

It's not too hard to find someone who won't have him back.

Omg, I assumed you were joking in your last post.

Did you not read the op post that said they live a 25 minute drive apart?
So that would be, what, around 30 miles? Maybe a bit less. Even if I've got my maths wrong and it's a mere 20 miles or so, that is quite some way to push a bbq!
You'd have to set off very early to get there in time for lunch

giggly · 12/04/2021 22:59

This is exactly the sort of cf thing my sister would do. She asked if she and bil could stay at my house when I was I on holiday for a night. Turns out they stayed for 3 nights along with 8 friends of theirs😳

Mexico1986 · 12/04/2021 22:02

We never asked anyone to bring their own braai though let alone be asked to leave it for another braai the next day

Don’t be such an arse Glenda!!

Thank you, you inspired a name change! (And were spot on too!)

cerealgamechanger · 12/04/2021 21:54

@GlendaPickle- you're a massive CF for trying to take advantage of the OP like this! Give her back the rest of her stuff.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 12/04/2021 20:49

@dancemummy

We were invited to a bbq once and I asked what they’d like me to bring, and they suggested burgers. They then text back and asked to also bring some sausages and chicken. No problem we said. I then thought I’d best check they had rolls, oh no, could we get some of those too. Oh and some salad, oh and they’ve got tea and coffee but if we’d like to get some cold drinks that would be great. My husband and I shopped laughing that we’d basically brought the whole bbq! Then as we were about to leave they called to ask if we had any charcoal for the bbq as they’d had a quick look and didn’t have any!!! (They live within walking distance of a Wickes and B&Q). My kind OH said we’d stop off and get some on the way over. We teased them about it for a few years after, and it’s still a story we tell inn slight disbelief. We don’t really see them as friends anymore as sadly they were like this in all aspects of our friendship. Very one sided. Take care x
See, I wouldn't have even gone there. By that second text, I'd have sent back a laughing emoji with 'Yeah, right! Are you actually providing just the actual BBQ? LOL.' And then when they asked more said, 'On second thought, think we'll give it a pass.' Because people like this aren't friends and not worth keeping.

As I said, my BBQ is not cheap, it's also heavy (the fuel canisters for them are, too) so the fuck I'd load it in my car and take it a CFer's house.

crossroads1 · 12/04/2021 20:35

cheeky and very cheap of them! curious to know what their reaction was when you said no?

give ppl an inch and they take a mile!!

Bard6817 · 12/04/2021 20:33

They don’t sound like friends at all. I was going to suggest you shouldn’t go, but then saw you didn’t anyway.

Move on, they are wrong’uns.
