Silly things your mother did (lighthearted)

Trying to lighten my current mood and started to think about things my mother did - and insisted that I do - as they were "the done thing" back in the day.

Turning the clothes inside out to put on the washing line in case a bird shat on them
Lining every shelf in your kitchen unit with patterned greaseproof paper
Stuffing the chicken and then sewing it up with a needle and thread

Suffice to say, I stopped these ridiculous traditions when i realised there was no valid purpose to them Grin

Spaghetti lasagne. Tinned spagetti between the layers of pasta.

Gold!

Oh I just love all of these Smile

I always remember a nice sunny day where a serious of unfortunate events occured, first of all a frog managed to wedge itself somehow under my mums foot in her sandle at which point he started panicking and flapping her arms around instead of just tipping it out or pulling her foot out. Then later our alsation was chasing a wasp, it stung my mum on the knee and then our dog accidentally bit her trying to get the wasp, not a serious bite though. Then later she managed to drop a hot pie on her foot burnt her foot, so had her foot in a bucket of water and was insisting on trying to sort of walk around the house cleaning instead sitting and resting with it in the bucket. The last one I had to take a picture as it was so funny what she was doing, still have it somewhere.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/01/2021 18:03

My mum if ever using a tin (or jar 😊) of something like tomatoes, beans, pasta sauce etc etc, would always empty into the saucepan etc then add about 2 tablespoons of water to the tin (jar) swill it around to get the rest out.

Fuckingcrustybread · 28/01/2021 17:50

Yes, it was from those little cards and yes to the mango chutney, all in dishes to choose your own garnish.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 28/01/2021 17:47
@Fuckingcrustybread something like this? My mum collected recipe cards, I’ve got several sets, can’t bring myself to Chuck them, I know she spent a fortune on them
I'd love to see those cards! Especially the party fare ones - I bet those are fab

Fuckingcrustybread

She used to make curry with sultanas and serve desiccated coconut and chopped hard boiled eggs on the side. I'm sure that the recipe came from one of those 1970s "exotic" cookbooks.

My mum put those extras (plus mango chutney) in little ramekins so you could pick your own garnish, it was pretty exciting (and definitely exotic) back in the day

trappedsincesundaymorn · 28/01/2021 17:38

We used to have fluff cushion covers on the sofa and chairs in the "front room" (which actually faced the back garden, so no idea why she insisted on calling it that!), she would brush them every morning to get them fluffy again, and forbid anyone to sit in them for at least 2 hours. Mum would never add fabric conditioner at the start of a wash either, she would stop the machine during the start of the rinse cycle, add the conditioner and the resume the cycle. The weirdest quirk of hers was wearing a skirt over jeans in the winter....never found out what that was in aid of though.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 28/01/2021 17:38

For those whose mothers had winter and summer curtains- Having to change curtains for seasons just sounds like a whole lot of unnecessary hassle!!

Fwaltz · 28/01/2021 17:37
 • Ironed naked or just wearing pop socks.
 • Lived in pop socks - thought they were brilliant.
 • Makes herself late for things by doing tasks she’d never normally do (ie ironing towels!!)
Mary54 · 28/01/2021 17:36

Why would you not iron tea towels?
Like some other posters, I was surprised that some people find it odd to recycle old items of clothing/ sheets for cleaning, reuse plastic bags and containers etc
It may have been done for financial reasons at a time when it wasn’t trendy to want to save the planet but the effect is the same

littlemisskt · 28/01/2021 17:34

Sultanas in a curry sounds quite nice in comparison to my Mum added chopped apple and sultanas to spaghetti bolognaise!

Woollyslippers · 28/01/2021 17:32

She would be paranoid about folk seeing in through the window so everything had to be neat and in its place. But then she would drop the Venetian blinds down and tilt them in a certain way so no one could see in Hmm

And said blinds were never pulled right up, they had to have six slants showing. And she had summer and winter curtains, both of which were hideous.
@MuggleStudiesResearchProject haha, mine too with the kidneys- Mum and Granny were forever tugging and growling at my cropped jumpers!

My mum was something of a yoghurt-knitting hippie; clothes were home-made and treats in our house were something else. Instead of chocolate we had carob, instead of sweets we had licorice- not strings of licorice but licorice roots which were basically just a brown stick that you chewed. Funnily enough now that she's a grandmother, she gives my kids sweets at any and every opportunity- where's the justice?! Grin
Same here! Limited snacks in the teenage years when we were getting "fat" Hmm and I now have to remove half the rubbish she passes on to my teenagers!
We had a health food van come down our street, and I remember the carob bars that I was really pleased with as a vague treat. No wandering off to the corner shop for us.

My mum was obsessed with airing washing too....she would go nuts if i took something off the line and put it on without it going into the airing cupboard for about 3 years firstGrin

My 100yr old grandmother could never drink from a bottle or can- presumably it was common or dirty? She always carried a pop-up, plastic cup in her handbag which came in a vivid, neon colour! A precursor to those silicone, collapsable cups we have now.

No sitting on cold surfaces or you get piles

Always have a slip underneath everything and hoisery- no bare legs!

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 28/01/2021 15:25

Putting a kettle of boiling water up the arse of a chicken before roasting it! Hmm

Telling me and Dsises that periods made you smell.

Any man alone in a cinema was a pervert, even at adult showings.

'Wimmin' should only ever drink a small glass of alcohol and never pour for themselves.

Me and DSISes should be 'ladylike' and DBro should be a gentleman, we had a nanny, who taught him to stand up when ladies entered and taught us how to make 'polite conversation', no readers, we are not in our 80's.
