I bought a white coat in the sales to look like Olivia Pope, but I actually resemble a middle aged taekwando instructor

I had a lovely Adidas tracksuit top and my hair tied in a pony tail

I thought I looked sporty and cool and went to work when they asked why I had came dressed as Vicky pollard

Cruelest of all is how right they were

Purplethrow · 17/01/2021 16:41

@IHaveBrilloHair properly made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣

EscapeTheCastle · 17/01/2021 16:39

I bought a nice short trench coat from Dorothy Perkins. It was a very flattering fit on me and I looked great in it. Proudly worn to work on my train commute. The problem was it was the exact same shade of the unique, bright blue colour as the train staff uniform of South West Trains.
I realised as I entered the station and a big group of ticket inspectors gathered at at the barriers all turned to look at me like I was about to join them.

BalloonSlayer · 17/01/2021 16:32

I bought a pair of fleecy fluffy brown jogging trousers that I thought would look cosy and chic snuggled up on the sofa on a cold day.

I look like the back half of a pantomime donkey who has been cruelly deserted by their partner.

God I've got loads of these now I come to think of it.
My most recent cannot be excused by being young and skint as it was last year.
Don't know if it travels as very French reference but I'll give it a go....

We were on holiday in Paris and I was enjoying not being in the very conservative French countryside we live in and nostagically decided to team my dungaree shorts with my DMs. Topped it off with a white long sleeved top under a dark t-shirt.
I had a lovely day strutting about Paris reliving a nostalgic grungy 80s feeling and thinking I was very Brit cool / London compared to the prim parisiens.

Met my French DH at the end of the day to go for a drink and he was half laughing half wanting me to go home and get changed as I was a dead ringer for ultra famous French clown / comedian Coluche.

@Rainbowandscarlett

I once bought a beige trench coat as glamour magazine kept banging on about it being a ‘classic wardrobe staple’

I looked like inspector gadget

🤣

I haven't read all the replies yet, but I'll add mine in so long.

I had a white raincoat some years back and on the way back from the school run I stopped off with the DC at the park.

It was near a high school and a few of the kids were hanging around the park.

The next minute all I hear from behind me was..... Baaaa baaaa

Hmm

Needless to say we left pretty sharp and I never wore it out again.

@MLMsuperfan

As the saying goes it's only a joke if everyone is laughing. A joke at others' expense may not be so kind.

FFS the joke was at herself . She is laughing at herself . The rest of us are laughing because we know that if we tried to do the same thing we would also look like a middle age martial arts instructor . And the same to the other examples on this thread . We are laughing at ourselves .

Smilecrying. Literally crying.

Beachcomber · 17/01/2021 16:06

Oh I've just remembered another one. As a skint young mother with a limited wardrobe (story of my life it seems) I teamed knee high black boots with skinny jeans and a leather jacket when that look was just coming into fashion thinking I looked like Kylie Minogue / Madonna in the Hung Up video when she's out dancing in the town with all the cool street hunks.

Reality was my jeans were cheap badly cut not quite skinny enough fit and my boots were really tight. I looked like a member of the Gestapo (cue my German mum friend giving me the side eye on the school run).

I love this thread. I recently bought a lovely red double breasted winter coat. Very stylish. I modelled it for DH who started singing "My father took me into the city, to see a marching band".

Hurtful.

GravityFalls · 17/01/2021 16:02

I know who that trilby would make me look like, I say, I know who...

Crying with laughter at this thread whilst I sit in my local kids play park... (I do have a child btw not just here for the kicks). I actually just snorted.

There's a woman on the next bench humming and rocking so between us we are really putting on quite a show!

Elwynne · 17/01/2021 15:57

Oh jesus yes to the idea of the jowly woman in her 50s next to every fashion advert! I actually would love that and look forward to my future modelling career.

Hugoslavia · 17/01/2021 15:52

I have a beautiful white coat. Unfortunately it makes me look like a lab technician. I sympathize.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 17/01/2021 15:50

DH bought me a fabulously glamorous coat in pale pink faux shaggy fur. First time I wore it out a ‘friend’ asked why Pat Butcher was invited.

I don’t care, I love that coat.

bluerad · 17/01/2021 15:50

@DriveThroughSwabber

Every day I go to work dressed as Paddington Bear (1980s stop motion version) and I don't care Grin. I love my hat and duffle coat.

AllTheChocolateNow · 17/01/2021 15:49

This reminds me of my first haircut post birth of youngest child. I had long, scruffy hair I’d been wearing up in a ponytail forever and wanted something short and sharp, so I went for what I thought was a very sleek, shiny bob.

Got home and older DC said I looked like Willy Wonka (obvs the Johnny Depp incarnation). I was crushed 😆.

Beachcomber · 17/01/2021 15:45

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g 😆

Not sure I have quite got over it actually. Still cringe about it 20 years later but I'm hoping this thread will prove to be cathartic and I will finally be able to lay it to rest....

@purplethrow Just saw your pic, I love it!!

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 17/01/2021 15:42

Feet scrotums 😂

Cherryup · 17/01/2021 15:40

I treated myself to a cool pair of tan ruched fabric trainers, wore them to work, my boss said it looked like I had scotums on my feet.

Sold them on eBay.
