I bought a white coat in the sales to look like Olivia Pope, but I actually resemble a middle aged taekwando instructor

I think she was being funny 😄

@Gliblet

Oh I have loved this thread, thank you all 🤣

When I had DS, DH kept reading about push presents and decided to get me a chocolate brown faux fur waist length gilet. I was a size 18-20 even without the effect breastfeeding was having on my boobs, so this thing was skintight. I looked like someone had shaved the legs and face of a small fat bear to try to sneak it into a dog grooming show 🐩

Oh my word 😂😂😂😂
Afromeg · 18/01/2021 17:40

Posted this earlier on the thread. Olivia Pope = Kerry Washington, Scandal TV Show.

@ifIwerenotanandroid

I once had a white skirt which I wore with a top & short cardigan. I was looking at something in the meat section of the supermarket when an old bloke came up behind me & asked, "Excuse me, do you have duck breasts?".

I was tempted to say, "No, just my own," but I didn't know if he was innocent or pervy, so I just fixed him with the Death Stare & coldly said, "I don't work here," & he apologised.

Poor old bugger
ssd · 18/01/2021 17:38

I've no idea who she is either. The only famous person I've seen in a white belted coat is Simon le bon, but I'm showing my age now Grin

cherish123 · 18/01/2021 17:38

I wear white jeans and I think they look okay but I know some people think they are tarty.

cherish123 · 18/01/2021 17:36

No idea who Olivia Pope is. Googled the name. All I got was a lawyer in an American show. She seemed to wear suits. Not sure if i have right person.

I am sure you don't look like middle-aged T instructor! If you hate it, send it back.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 18/01/2021 17:34

If I wear olive/khaki I look like a fat extra from The Land Girls.

I once bought one of those cheap off shoulder jumpers off Ebay. It was so shiny and tight, I looked like a squishy dog toy.

Black and baggy is the way forward.

  1. Puffa or other padded jackets... do a reality check on how much inherent padding you have. Also factor in height.
Blowingagale · 18/01/2021 17:25

Oh and yes another Classics vote, maybe not immediately so more poster see it in Chat

Blowingagale · 18/01/2021 17:22
  1. Check your resemblance to the tall, elegant size 6 model wearing the perfect top before pressing add to basket.
Mummadeeze · 18/01/2021 17:21

I bought an oversized co-ord (tracksuit) from PrettyLittleThing.com to look like a member of Little Mix. I look like Vicky Pollard.

OhMsBeliever · 18/01/2021 17:16

Thank you, I've had a really shit day and this thread has had me crying with laughter. Grin

I'd love to share my fashion faux pas with you all, but I'm just perfect. Wink Not really, I just wear jeans/leggings and hoodies pretty much all the time.

lastqueenofscotland · 18/01/2021 17:04

I bought a lovely shirt once that just looked like a chefs jacket on me Sad

CheesePleaz · 18/01/2021 17:04

I admire anyone who owns white clothing, especially in winter. I attract dirt 🤣

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 18/01/2021 17:03
  1. Any coats / jackets / blazers check for resemblance to detectives, football managers, gestapo, circus ring masters and of course karate instructors.
Thelnebriati · 18/01/2021 16:43

This thread deserves a place in Classics

LilyRose88 · 18/01/2021 16:33

I wish I had seen this thread before I placed an eBay bid on a rather nice white padded mid-thigh length puffa jacket. It was a Canadian brand and looked very elegant. In my mind I thought I would resemble one of the lead characters in a Scandi noir crime series. I won the jacket and it arrived today.

I should add that I am a solid size 14. And clearly very optimistic/slightly deluded. I unwrapped it and tried it on, relieved that it did up comfortably. I then looked in the mirror and any illusions of elegance disappeared. I looked like an igloo on legs!

I have put the jacket at the back of my wardrobe and I'm hoping that my boyfriend doesn't ask me about it. I think he would cry with laughter if he saw me wearing it. To be honest I laughed a little bit myself when I saw my reflection. Thank goodness I didn't wear it out. Blush

  1. if you are aiming for the bohemian look , be mindful that a synonym in the thesaurus is beatnik and this is exactly what you will resemble.
RedRec · 18/01/2021 16:12

5: When compensating for brutal new short hair do with extra make up and statement jewellery, check mirror for resemblance to Pat Butcher before going out.

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 18/01/2021 16:07

Anything furry, shaggy or with wings - check for cartoon animal doppelgängers.

lurkingfromhome · 18/01/2021 15:37
  1. Anything pink: check for resemblance to a penis.
ErrolTheDragon · 18/01/2021 15:35

There seem to be some general rules we can extract from this excellent thread.
So, if you're anything other than long slim model proportions:

  1. Jumpsuits and dungarees: don't.
  2. If the word 'chic' enters your thought processes: do a serious reality check before buying.
  3. dots: check for mr blobby and Minnie Mouse likeness.

NovemberR do have a little skirt you could wear with the red leggings and jumper? Like maybe a flared mini, either black if you wanted something more neutral or green for more festive? Honestly I think it would look fine with a skirt, it's just the leggings are so thin they look like tights.
